In 2004 when my son, Billy Jay Ward, went home we celebrated his life with his favorite story - The Lord of Rings. We played the music from the movies and my beautiful daughter decorated the wake with a Rings theme. Often I think he waited til the last movie came out to travel to Heaven. I miss you Billy Jay but know you are with Jesus and the rest of your family.
Wow, fave song and ultimate favorite movies, all smashed into one :D Loved it! You should maybe do the same song with the Return Of the King...THAT would make me cry X'(
This song fits the themes of Frodo's journey as well as Annie Lenox's song "Into the West" does at the end of Return of the King, maybe even better. I was amazed, when I watched Gods and Generals and heard this song, I thought it was Annie Lenox singing at first. Both women have such similar voices.
You picked perfect moments from the movie for this, you could make videos professionaly, very well done, you should be proud of this. I wish every Tolkien lover could see this!
It is so amazing how people who are in touch emotionally with themselves think and feel similarly. I knew of the movie Gods and Generals, but did not know who Mary Fahl was until recently. I KNEW that if someone out there knew this song, they would put it to the Story of the Lord of the Rings. I searched it out and sure enough..... How truly wonderful!! I'm a 39 year old man, and I've watched this three times and it's moved me to tears every time.... thank you so much!
the song is beautiful, the meaning undeniable. but having seen it in gods and generals.. it is so so much more appropriate in that genre.. tho the rings is a great story.. it is not a REAL story.. it cannot compete with the REALITY of the 600,000 who gave their life for their belief.. FOR REAL.
@kingslegion1 I see what you're saying, but I would like to point out that even though LotR is fictional it is an incredibly powerful story. The themes of friendship, sacrifice, and courage & hope in the face of desperation and death carry past the fictional story into real life, in the books more so than in the movies. I know the story of Frodo's journey has inspired me nearly as much as the story of the South during the War.
This makes me think of my Father, who died of Cancer when I was 8. He is with his blessed Savior now, out of pain, sorrow and suffering. God bless you.
This Is a Nice song and I love Lord of the rings too for all of you who are upset about the video I'm sorry. The cool thing is that I'm watching Gods & Generals in school the song fits great with both the sad thing is that my classmates didn't like the song all except me well at least you guys do that's what counts.
ok listen to all those people who get mad thats its not about the american revolution but Tolkien the brilliant man who wrote lord of the rings based alot of it on world war 1 and 2 and many other wars and anyway its a great music video so lay off the wonderful person who made it
good language.... that would be a negative. wrong damn movie. it was originally for gods and generals. get yer facts straight. It's still a good match and people do that all the time here. sheesh
The song is gorgeous and the clips go with it so more gorgeously, ha. all of it fits frodo completely perfect. 5000000000000 out of 5. You did a wonderful job and I love this vid!
Reality check KM and Crowley, but "Going Home" is not from Gods and General (though this version was used in the movie).
The melody was written by Czech composer Dvorak in late 1800's and is from the New World Symphony and is about Christopher Columbus. The lyrics was made by William Fisher in early 1900's. It has been used in countless movies and in England for instance it is most famous for being the Hovis Bread commercial theme tune. :P
Well yes, there *is* a tune/song, "Going Home" Dvorak used as the 2nd, largo movement of his New World Symphony. Josephine Cameron has an extensive post on its history on her pleasecomeflying blog: 10/17/07.
But that tune and those words are CLEARLY not this one. Unless proven otherwise, I'm accepting word & music were written by Mary Fahl.
BTW - check out CalikoKat's YouTube piano version. Achingly gorgeous!
Your Hovis mention led me to their terrific "122 years" ad on YouTube. Thanks!
While I am a fan of Lord of the Rings, I wish that the musical score created for the opening of God's and Generals, stay with the movie. The song so aptly encapsulates the faith and perspective of Gen. Thomas Jackson. When I conducted a search for Mary Fahl's Going Home and found this to be the first hit, I was disappointed. While Lord of the Rings was great, I tire of how we have traded fantasy for inspirational reality and how we are losing the moving lessons from our magnificent heritage.
Hey i just wanted to say something here and i dont mean to be offensive. I never have personally seen Gods and Generals, but it sounds like it has a good message, and so does lord of the rings. The two stories are definitely very different but its a still sort of good and evil battle when it comes down to it, in gods and generals, right? And fantasy can be just as moving and inspirational as our magnificent heritage. And I also think this song so aptly encapsulates Frodo's journey. :)
I'm so sorry for your loss, Whickerscolte. The song's opening line ~ 'They say there's a place where dreams have all gone...' I hope your beloved is resting there now, wherever her dreams have taken her.
There are few songs that touch the soul and this is one of them. The journey she has taken is one of wonder and peace; and she will have left signposts for you to follow when it is your time. Until then, she is always with you as time doesn't exist in her world.....so love and cherish the memories and make new ones that will give her pleasure to see you live the rest of your life surrounded by the joy of knowing her.
The LoTR has a thread running through it that's here in the song; but the film G and G is so sad- showing the way that man hasn't learnt anything from wars -anywhere or in any century. When I read the comments posted by Whickerscolte and FareYouWell, it made me realise just what we lose when a loved one walks a new path without us. I hope that when it's my time to take the journey that this song is in the background leading me to the next realm.
GOLLY! I've always thought of this song as pertaining to Frodo! And now you've gone a done a video for it, fantastic! Thanks so much, you did an awesome job!
I just heard this song today in the movie 'Gods & Generals' and will learn to sing & play on guitar. This song has such strong Irish melodic feeling, is your Nana from Éire?
