They were trained since they were 7 and went to war when 17.( almost every man had to go to war, except council men or priests) In Athene it was your choice if you wanted to be a soldier and your training started at 17 yr. Only in times of war there was soldier's duty that means you have to go to war. But then there were also alot of hired soldiers, spartans only fought with real greeks so no hired man

How can you blatantly compare two totally different styles of combat. The Spartans were backed into a corner, the Persians severely out numbered them so the best offense was a defense.
Where as Achilles was on the side outnumbering Troy, thus allowing him to fight in a different more up close manner. Not to mention Achilles wasn't trained to fight, his style of combat was careless. Leonidas was trained to fight.
Sadly, the 300 film makers destroyed Leonidas character by making the whole fights ridiculous and exagerated. They made it be like a film. From the other side, Troy was one of the best film I saw. Why? First it's a real story, the illiads unlike the 300 story. Secondly, Achilles wasn't exagerated in the film, making it realistic and really telling his life and thoughts. Achilles was a great fighter but also a great philosopher, not just a brute. That's why Troy was way better, it's a real movie.

Yes, however Homer was not the only source we have of the Trojan war. Many Latin and Greek historians and writers wrote about the Trojan war. Homer is just the basic source. What does this mean? Taking into account that they found the ruins of Troy, and that they proved that the city was destroyed at some point, we can say that the Trojan war probably did happen. Homer (and the others) probably just embellished the story.
Leonides actually had 3200 men and 300 personal gaurd. Xerxes had 300000 men enough to literally block out the sun with there arrows. But they lost due to greek technology, the hoplites and the phalanx formation.
there was actually 1300 men 300 sparans 1000 greeks from the city of athens but the men from the athens didnt get to fight for so long the just went home but a day later the persians went through the narrow crossing which ment outflanking the spartans if those athenians didnt go home this story would never had happend the way it did

How can you blatantly compare two totally different styles of combat. The Spartans were backed into a corner, the Persians severely out numbered them so the best offense was a defense.
Where as Achilles was on the side outnumbering Troy, thus allowing him to fight in a different more up close manner. Not to mention Achilles wasn't trained to fight, his style of combat was careless. Leonidas was trained to fight.
Achilles would have no chance against Leonidas.

Sadly, the 300 film makers destroyed Leonidas character by making the whole fights ridiculous and exagerated. They made it be like a film. From the other side, Troy was one of the best film I saw. Why? First it's a real story, the illiads unlike the 300 story. Secondly, Achilles wasn't exagerated in the film, making it realistic and really telling his life and thoughts. Achilles was a great fighter but also a great philosopher, not just a brute. That's why Troy was way better, it's a real movie.

Of course that troyan war was the historical fact , but whole story about Achilles, Helen, Paris and the rest is born from myth about the "Apple of Discord, read the books man higher than 5th grade , then judge ;)

The only thing is that the battle of Thermopylae did happen. And it actually was like in the movie: 300 (war machines though) men against hundreds of thousands. Plus, 300 was way more realistic than Troy

If you ever come you can go and visit the Spartan tomb at Thermopylae. The only fiction about the movie is that, the 300 did not fight alone but with 2-3000 other Greeks, whatever the number was the Persians were millions (maybe this is fiction), today historians say they were hundreds of thousands... just compare the numbers..

@83zombielord Uh....you do realize that the story of Troy is based on the writings of a man from 1000s of years ago who lived hundred of years after the Trojan Wars, and whose existence is disputed to this day (it's very likely that were hundreds of "Homers"), right? Personally, I like Troy better, but criticizing 300 for not being real and for having a fake story is not very smart when comparing it to Troy, when all 300 really did was downplay the role of the non-Spartan infantry.

Yes, however Homer was not the only source we have of the Trojan war. Many Latin and Greek historians and writers wrote about the Trojan war. Homer is just the basic source. What does this mean? Taking into account that they found the ruins of Troy, and that they proved that the city was destroyed at some point, we can say that the Trojan war probably did happen. Homer (and the others) probably just embellished the story.

Leonides actually had 3200 men and 300 personal gaurd. Xerxes had 300000 men enough to literally block out the sun with there arrows. But they lost due to greek technology, the hoplites and the phalanx formation.

there was actually 1300 men 300 sparans 1000 greeks from the city of athens but the men from the athens didnt get to fight for so long the just went home but a day later the persians went through the narrow crossing which ment outflanking the spartans if those athenians didnt go home this story would never had happend the way it did
