I was listening to Unanswerable Lust and Beast Box earlier today so it was a real pleasure to see these Luxuria videos, thanks for posting. Howard at his very best!
Is it just me or does Nokos guitar work often sound distinctly like Hank Marvins? Unfortunately for Devoto, I can't help thinking his non pop star looks really worked against him. If he'd only been born a generation later, that wouldn't have mattered. It's not as if his ugliness has ever done Robbie Williams any harm, is it? Come to think of it, neither has his complete lack of talent! Certainly says a hell of a lot for Stephen Duffy that he actually managed to make that idiot sound quite good.
@MisAnnThorpe Legend has it that lack of sucess was down to Devoto's relationship with the music press??!! Dunno how true it is?? But a real shame....Magazine deserved so much more than they got charts wise....Really like the Luxuria sound and how diverse has Noko's career been?? The Cure, The Banshees, Luxuria, Apollo 440, Magazine etc etc...................
There is a video for every song on the "Beast Box" album. Luxuria's two albums, "Unanswerable Lust" and "Beast Box" were released in a special Japanese box set containing Howard Devoto's book of lyrics and a VHS with all of the videos from the "Beast Box" album. Sadly, only this video and the video for the single "Redneck" from the first album have shown up on youtube. I would kill to see the others, but that box set is just so expensive and rare.
@cinnmcrickson I've never heard the Beast Box LP, in fact I've never even seen it! Something tells me it's not as good as Unanswerable Lust (maybe this track). Would I be right or wrong in my assumption?
@MisAnnThorpe Well, it's really all down to taste, whether you'll like it or not. I think the album is definitely more of an acquired taste as opposed to "Unanswerable Lust," which is really a more strongly constructed album, track-order-wise. But it is a DEFINITE must to listen to, I must say. My favorite song of all time, "I've Been Expecting You," is on it. It is definitely a worthwhile album that deserved more fanfare than it got. But that's unfortunately the norm for Devoto's work.
@MisAnnThorpe Thanks for attempting to answer my stupid and unanswerable question! But you have managed to confirm what I guess I've probably always known; I need to get Beast box!
A 3CD 'Box' re-release in September. Great stuff.

Different version to the album (and slightly naff!), but if there is a god, I bet he/she's jealous of Mr Devoto...(FACT! 9 out of 10 lab rats agreed)

This version is at the end of my CD, just before Jezebel - must be an extra track. I love this version!

Howard Devoto is a freaking genius. He should have been a huge star like Bowie.

Yes, I know what I'm going to be listening to in the Apocalypse. Howard years ahead of his time, as usual ... like all the true greats.
