and there is NOTHING wrong with standing up for yourself. But do it at an appropriate time. Don't try to take on the whole world. The people are educated and know how gays feel. yet they say it anyways. Pick your battles wisely. And when necessary yes, stand up for yourself and educate the individual.
why not. clearly who don't understand gay history. when you live in a world of hate.. it's always an appropriate time. fuck what people think. if you take offense of something speak out. don't come on here and try to spew this help the world bullshit... they will never change... so say what you want. it's not about fighting a battle.... get off the high horse. it's all about expression and ideas. in this countrey... if something said pisses you off call it out.
breeders have everything.. do they need ownsership of that word too? and black poeople should stop using nigger. why i hate both phrases.... well, they make you sound stupid. they both attack a language 2000 years in the making.
gay people tend to think of their sexuality as who they are. You are much more than your sexual preference. I do not agree with anything you say. You aren't going to stop people from saying it. Fight all you want that is wasted energy. You want to stand up for your community? Go build homes for the homeless or Volunteer or donate money. Unite as gays and do something instead of complaining. I'm gay and I've heard enough of this stupid debate. People will not stop just cuz you want them too.
I disagree. I do get it. I didn't say anything offensive. I strongly support the gay community. But fighting a battle you cannot win isn't worth your time. I learned that a long ago, that you can't stop the world from using the phrases. Maybe one day people will move on to something else? probably not lol. I have this feeling we will always be bashed upon. All I'm saying is direct all that energy and motivation into doing something positive and helpful for the world or your community.
I Started To Say "That's So Gay" When I Was 8 Years Old....I Had NOO Idea What Gay Was...I Asked A Kid In My Class What It Meant And He Told Me "It Meant Ricky Martin"...But When I Finally Knew What It Mean I Didnt See How It Made Sense In The Context Like "That Hat Is So Gay"...It Dosint Really Make Sense. And Chris Crocker Said We Should Replace It With "That's So Straight"...So Now I Say That Instead Of "That's So Gay". Cuz I Don't Want To Offend PPL.
correct me if i'm wrong... but the origin of the N word is "negro" which literally means "black"
don't get me wrong it's not an appropriate word at all, but it's not correct to say that it has nothing to do with black people, because that's where the meaning of the word got its start. the N word doesn't "mean" ignorant...
You are so right, but for the people that say so what - what's the big deal I have another word for them to consider. Hopefully everyone agrees that the "N" word is wrong and shouldn't be used. But there was another word that used to be used that was "no big deal - it's just a word". It was a simple 3 letter word - boy. That word was directed at African-American men in an attempt to belittle and degrade them. Words have power and ignorance is no excuse. Don't let others define who you are.
A very good argument for why gays need to take a stand and defend our rights on every front. If not now, when? Our generation is one of the first to have lived with the possibility of Gay Marriage. It didn't just come up last year, it took years to gain acceotance. What we do today will affect the future. Who will stand up to ignorace and hatred, if not you?
"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope; and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." - Robert F. Kennedy Sr.
Margaret Atwood, asserts something similar, (the logical conclusions of casually held ideals) as a satire at in the Handmaid's Tale. Although it is for women's rights, it can certainly be applied here as well.
firstly the hair looks really good scotty. secondly i agree with you pretty much 100% on your stance on "that's so gay." when i heard diehl (of whom everyone knows i adore) say "just punch then in the face." my 1st thought was not everyone is physically able to do that and/or some people don't believe in resorting to violence to solve an issue. i must admit when i first came out was when "that's so gay" really found the limelight and was high among the choice of cool statements to use when
when the "appropriate" point in a conversation came up. it was almost like people were hoping for the chance to say it in any conversation. however when i came out i didn't want to instantly turn into militant gay. i wanted to be cool gay. therefore, even though i never said it myself (though i know at some point of lost rationale in my life i've slipped and said it) i never made an issue of it if a friend said it. well things are different now as far as i'm concerned. most people, imo, that
use it now, consciously know that what they are saying carries a negative meaning towards gay people and are using it partly with that purpose, i now do say something. i don't attack the person. just try to start a small dialogue with them and i've found with most they feel pretty silly for saying it. i must give credit to wanda sykes for the most part for making me understand no it's not ok to just let people say it and stay silent. ok of course i could continue but i'll spare u. nice post!
i agree with you that NOW it pretty much is alot like retarded. it doesnt really mean what it sounds like if you think about it. its just another way of expressing one's feelings about a subject. like all swear words or derogatory sayings it has some root that many people are not aware of but the root doesnt matter, think only about what each person means when they say what they say not just about the words they use. Ex. SHIT stands for Ship High in Transit, for shipping manure ocer the ocean
This is stupid. Gay folks always have so much drama surrounding them.
The connotation of the phrase "that's so gay" has changed from what it use to mean. It's not putting us down because we are gay anymore. It's totally different. "Gay" didn't use to mean homosexual. "Queer" didn't use to mean homosexual. Homosexual didn't even come about until the 1800's. Homosexual used to be Eunuch. So.. ignore it or make a big deal out of it.. who gives a shit. Just quit being big queens!
of course it started out as an attack against the gay community. the point isn't what it meant then, it's what it means now---it's no longer a direct attack against the gay community, so getting offended at individual people for saying it is useless and unfair...level-headedly explaining to them that it's rude and asking them to try not to say it is the solution (not that anything we can do will actually STOP this usage).
Scott, you are very inspirational. You just make me feel good about myself. One thing though, in another video, you say you're old. My God, what does that make me? That's the only thing that doesn't make me feel good, LOL......my grandmother used to say "wait until you get my age", I just laughed at here....I'm not laughing now.......
disco75 so have i me and my friend say thats so straight.. or i turn around and say Really?! that chair is having homosexual tendencies with another male or female chair? wtf? lol
If anyone ever says, "That's so gay" around me, I turn around and ask them, "Really, is it really homosexual?" And that usually shuts them up. Lol.
But Scotty is right; it's derogatory just like the "n" word.
The "n" word actually started from the base word "negro" and when spoken quickly in the south with their accent, it became "negra" and when spoken even faster......
It was never meant to be a derogatory until the "white man" started using it.
your hair rocks - time to draw a line under the whole "thats so gay" issue. It's not even worth the time. People will continue to say it and (thank God and democracy) in this country, they're allowed to say it.
Good point with it being the same thing saying "that's so retarded." It really made me think about the things that I say. I don't say "that's so gay" and I don't mean any harm if I do say something is retarded.. This whole debate has really made me think though!
LOL this reminds me of the recent debacle Obama had when he went on the Tonight show.. he said "Special Olympics" and he meant it in the negative, albeit humorous sense...
Smart people tend to adopt an air of superiority toward the less intellectually-endowed... Maybe that's something *we* need to work on. Hehe XD
Yes, thank you! This is what I've been trying to tell people!
I remember when the term became popular. Being called "gay" was considered one of the worst insults. It all started from homophobia and people being insecure.
I know many are complaining about this topic but I think it's interesting to hear different reactions. The 5SSG probably shouldn't get too focused on serious stuff but I like it's inclusion along with other things. re: my comments of last week- it doesn't bother me but now you have me thinking. Why doesn't it bother me? Seems like it should. Here's an example of why serious subjects can be good- it gets people thinking. A bit of thought is good for anyone. PS: lucky you- you've been in the sun.
I always wonder where things like saying gay to mean bad comes from. Where was ground zero for that and how does it catch on throughout the country.
And I am super tired of people doing the "thats gay and not in the good way" thing as a way to excuse themselves for using it. They should know enough not to. But, I suppose you just have to hope that it will die out eventually.
.Condemnation of homosexuality is an expression of homophobia the fear or hatred of homosexuals. Thats so gay! is an expression of homophobia. Homophobia is rooted in misogyny the fear and hatred of females. Think about it. When coaches call their male charges girls or ladies, they are insulting them for being like girls or like women.
I agree with everything you said but going on about how they might be to young to understand like three times is came across as pretty patronising. Someone disagrees with you so they are too young to understand. geez scotty... I guees your tired and pissed off but it dont help. I really dont want you guys falling out over this...
I am on you side in this debate mate. i just dont think you did yourself any favours here.
Finally, someone explains it *PERFECTLY*. The origins of "that's so gay" are indeed extremely homophobic. People that pretend otherwise are in total denial. It's like pretending that it's a-ok for a white boy with a cowboy hat to scream the n-word down in Harlem when someone bumps into him just because Blacks use the n-word in rap songs. Sorry, that's not how reality works.
I think you guys are debiting a good point. I myself agree with Derek, but that's besides the point.
yes the origins come from well before we were born, and somewhere in the early 80's started to mean stupid and dumb, like retarded does not refer to Mentally Handicapped people anymore like it did in the past, but has moved to the mean stupid and dumb. You may not agree, but the English language is evolving, and with that word meanings change.
WOW I like the way you think. cheers. I agree... the "community" idea only helps to further the sense of isolation when we want equal treatment. Sure, we have to be adamant for equal rights, but it's important to not ostracize ourselves in the process since our goal is for homosexuality to become an easily accepted, no-controversy behavior.
I like saying "Oh come on, there is nothing gay about xxx" or "If that were gay, it would be much more fabulous!" or "If he was gay, I would have already had him."
since when does the "n-word" (as you call it) mean ignorant, and not refer to black people...it used to refer to all black people, now it refers really to the lowest class of black people (the thugs and jerks).
actually according to wikipedia: The word originated as a term used in a neutral context to refer to black people, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective niger, meaning "black"
BillyX84 ... you conveniently skipped the very next two sentences: "It retains a place in popular culture and slang, however it is widely considered to be grossly offensive in mainstream English usage."
I guess the true test would be to go down into the South Side of Chicago and use the n-word around some Blacks in a fashion similar to "that's so gay" and see their reaction. You can insist that it is a "neutral" term, but I have a sneaking suspicion you will get your ass kicked very badly.
no, i didn't conveniently skip anything. My comment was part on a conversation about the origin of the n-word. Hence my comment talking about the origination of the word.
everyone knows that now it is an offensive term to black people, obviously.
You can't use it neutrally today. It isn't like "colored" or "Negro" or even "darky" which sound completely archaic, but haven't acquired additional baggage.
I'd compare the n-word to "bastard" rather than to "illegitimate child". The former has taken on meanings which have nothing to do with its original meaning.
No, i never said you could use it neutrally today. My comment was part of a conversation with scotty and nexttsar. I was talking about the origin of the word, not they way it is used today.
1.Take a picture, and twitter it. I failed to see that haircut. I tried but yeah....now please [=
2. I completely agree with you, it's like making fun of someone else for a religon, sexual orientation, race, etc. Just because it's used in a way that doesn't make it bad, doesn't mean that its not wrong.
It's great how you guys discuss the whole that's so gay thing. Actually you made me think. We have the same thing over here in Germany. My friend uses it every once in a while, I'll tell him it bothers me. I'd let it go with strangers though... Is it just me, or are you really pissed at Deihl and Derek? Maybe it's not that important after all :-)
I've really liked the last couple of weeks on the channel because there has been great debate. It's fantastic that not everyone agrees but are putting their case forward. Discussion and debate are the way forward. Ye guys should do this every month - take a topic like this and really get to grips with it. It's been enlightening an all counts and has really brought this issue out into the open which is always a good thing.

great video.. but dude.. don't go get all politically correct..
i am "gay" cause i date guys..
but i never asked to belong to a "community"..
i realize it comforts some people to feel like they belong to something.. take religion, for example..
but like religion, i think the only true way is to find YOUR OWN way..
things people say only have power if you grant that power..
to worry over the impact to some 'community' could go on forever..
be secure in yourself is all i wanna say..
thanx guys!

I like saying "Oh come on, there is nothing gay about xxx" or "If that were gay, it would be much more fabulous!" or "If he was gay, I would have already had him."

since when does the "n-word" (as you call it) mean ignorant, and not refer to black people...it used to refer to all black people, now it refers really to the lowest class of black people (the thugs and jerks).
nexttsar 2 years ago
i think he meant that the n-word inferred that all black people were ignorant
billyX84 2 years ago
nigger is a slang word for ignorant, it has nothing to do with being blach
Theophi1us 2 years ago
actually according to wikipedia: The word originated as a term used in a neutral context to refer to black people, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective niger, meaning "black"
billyX84 2 years ago
BillyX84 ... you conveniently skipped the very next two sentences: "It retains a place in popular culture and slang, however it is widely considered to be grossly offensive in mainstream English usage."
I guess the true test would be to go down into the South Side of Chicago and use the n-word around some Blacks in a fashion similar to "that's so gay" and see their reaction. You can insist that it is a "neutral" term, but I have a sneaking suspicion you will get your ass kicked very badly.
FreedomUSA1 2 years ago
no, i didn't conveniently skip anything. My comment was part on a conversation about the origin of the n-word. Hence my comment talking about the origination of the word.
everyone knows that now it is an offensive term to black people, obviously.
billyX84 2 years ago
You can't use it neutrally today. It isn't like "colored" or "Negro" or even "darky" which sound completely archaic, but haven't acquired additional baggage.
I'd compare the n-word to "bastard" rather than to "illegitimate child". The former has taken on meanings which have nothing to do with its original meaning.

You're really intelligent ^^
lol
Nice wording though. It's very true...
heck000yes 2 years ago 2
No, i never said you could use it neutrally today. My comment was part of a conversation with scotty and nexttsar. I was talking about the origin of the word, not they way it is used today.

i like your response the most

So three things.
3. Spit out your gum please. Okaythxbai. [=
3.

Out of all the videos posted thus far about "that's so gay", this one makes the most sense. Well stated and from the heart.

I get the basic idea but the phrase "pick your battles" comes to mind.
