you said it would work with compiled basic so if i wrote print "hi" then compiled it and put it on the chip would it work!?

No, it will not work. Basically you need to set the pins on the cartridge in the right sequence to make a picture.
As a matter of fact it will probably only work on BASIC for a PC.

It is an educated guess. The system probably uses some kind of bus to communicate with the game cartridge, that is why you can program it in what ever language you want.
Anyway, the print command won't set any pin on the chip.
