US and German militaries cooperated in the development of the Leopard and the M1 Abrams. Both tanks were born from the failed joint MBT 70 super tank concept which the Germans pulled out of due to costs. After the Yom Kippur war they realized that the super tank concept was needed but with upgraded armour. In the 1970's the US Army tested both the Leopard and M1 prototype and found they were compariable but the M1 had better armour. However the tests convinced the US to use the 120mm Rheinmetal.

As much as it sucks to say this, the Germans did have arguably the best tanks of WWII but, the Russians still managed to kick their ass, wiping out entire divisions with their T-34s.

Really that was a mobility advantage, the german tanks kept getting stuck in the russian swamps while the T-34's could race through them by virtue of being designed with the russian/syberian landscape in mind. Pretty embarrasing state of affairs being stuck in a bog with your tank.

You have obviously never read or heard of the famous German Luftwaffe. They produced the highest scoring aces in WWI and II. Were the developers of the first ever jet engine and were the first jet plane aviators. Probably the most advanced air power, militarily speaking, until the end of WWII.

Their armor was also the most feared in WWII. Probably still close to the same with the Leopard (MBTs seem even now a days). But, not the first thing you'd want to be shooting at you from a mile away.

Not unless the MBT as a weapon sees its revival. Recent military philosophy finds only a little role for tanks in modern scenarios. I presume there won´t be a Leopard 3 in the near future, instead the Leopard 2 will be updated untill it becomes too oldfashioned for warfare.

Maybe KMW (Kraus-Maffei-Wegmann) will develop a Leopard 3 on their own, but regarding the current economic situation and without interested customers this seems very utopic.

Germanys Bundeswehr recently reduced the number of Leopard 2 MBTs to aprox. 400 tanks, selling or phasing out all versions older than 2A5. Most recent version is the 2A6 with longer canon and 2A6E with additional Protection.

A new development is the Leopard 2 PSO (Peace Support Operations), a modified 2A5 for support on urban battlefields.

A new MBT isn`t planned at the moment, Germany currently replaces its ICVs and other infantry vehicles.

The problem with further upgrades is that the LEO is already carrying a lot more weight than the chassis was designed to hold, which decreases manouverability and top speed.

The Leopard 2 will stay in service for at least the next 10 to 20 years, but I don't think there will be a successor to it. I'm sure the Puma will take over, since tank battles are not really part of modern warfare.

I'll have to partially disagree. Tigers were slow to produce, expensive, difficult to deploy, limited in range and endurance, difficult to transport and mechanically unreliable. 5-10 Shermans could take them out in close combat because they were simply too slow. The Russians did the same thing with T-34s by driving right past the Tigers and shooting from behind. Also, you can't really compare the two because the Tiger is part of a different tank class. I think the Panther was the best.

I'd like to see any Russian tanker in his dinky little T90 take on a Leopard 2A6. It'd be just like a Tiger vs. T34, the Russians can throw all the tanks they want at the Leopard but the Leopard will gun them down any day.
