Emma, there is more ignorance. Actually the parts build for your car were researched and designed on a race car so don't start me there. As for chasers, I can't speak for all of them, but all my footage and photos of the storm and/or damage is sent for observation. No two storms are the same and they need all the info they can get to help improve warning time.
SonzillaGTR I hope ignorant assholes like you get into a situation where you learn how important chasers are. I guess too then the next firefighter that dies is a moron too. He was trained to do what he did but something went wrong. What a moron. Think about what you say.
@Twisted1MN OK, where do you get 'training' to be a storm chaser? Is it a correspondence course from the University of Nairobi? Storm chasers are no more important to understanding tornados than race car drivers are to understanding crash safety. But it's still very entertaining.
@emmasweeny Seriously? How do you think meteorologists know as much about severe weather (tornadoes in particular) as they do? Storm chasers. Get your facts straight before you go posting ignorant comments like that. You do a good job of making yourself look stupid.
Leave it to the know it all arm chair QBs. When you receive your warning to head to the basement, where do you think most reports come from? People like Andy! STFU and be thankful there are people out there risking their own life and property to keep you safe. Like you have any idea what its like to chase.
What a moron ! So when a huge branch fly's through your vehicles window and kills you whatcha gonna say then ? Your entire family will be crying asking, "why why did he go out there?" All while the mother and kids will be left out without a husband and father all because the moron wanted to chase some damn Tornado's How fuking retarded is that.
The vibe on this vid and its discription is not cool. I wish it would be explained and changed immediately. I was fooled like many others keep the vibe and integrity positive by not giving a word by word explanation as to why the car flipped. Other than the twister not flipping the car and the title not forcing that detail nice vid.
@stacygifford sure thing, accidents really do happen, but like I say, when dicks like this drive to within 100m of an EF3 in an unprotected vehicle, that is not an accident. That is plain stupidity - and if he is such a pro - he should know better
Heck, I lost count of all the Xterra's I saw between your and Reed's crew! If I would have been told that Xterra's were going to be a popular chase vehicle, I would have kept my '01! LOL Glad you are OK, Andy. As usual, some wicked footage!
BTW, for the information of the nay sayers, the Xterra is a wide stance SUV which is nice and stable. I have had mine on some extreme off camber situations without worry of flipping. Not to mention you cannot really beat these stock!
@gmoore34 - I agree with the other people... Andy didnt flip because of the tornado. btw you say your a chaser but I dont see any storm/tornado videos on your youtube account....
I grew up in Tornado Alley and was in the bad one 1979. I do not understand people who actually don't respect nature. These are nothing to dare with. I have seen them pick up entire trains and 18 wheelers like they were MATCHES......It is not worth the risk. Glad your ok!
@n8tfd Andy is no "jokester;" he's been at this for a long time. Unfortunately the video's description is probably not descriptive enough. Here is what Andy, the driver of this vehicle, said via Twitter: "The accident WAS NOT due to the tornado my steering jammed up forcing me sideways while in reverse hit a ditch incline and it went over. Yes i am fine." While I understand you being quick to jump to your conclusion, that was not the case here.
I think that you storm chaser guys are, frankly, insane and have a death wish.
One day you will get too close, even though you are 'experienced' and 'a professional', and we will see video recovered from your mangled vehicle as you realized you tempted fate for the last time.
It's educational to watch the videos for certain, but driving to within 100 meters of an EF-3+ is just unwise in the extreme.
All I have learned is that I should head the other direction when I see this.
@Knepperify1 Could be or maybe it's just the thrill. Ever been on a rollercoaster? Things can happen there as well. BTW, you might want to rethink your term "storm chaser" because it seems rather ambiguous to me. Many of these chasers have donated tons of data to be analyzed to adhere to timely warnings to save your butt. Yeh, scientists do "insane" things, but much of the outcome is very rewarding. Kinda harsh to assume one's fate.
@Knepperify1 Okay, so next time one of these storm chasers relay severe weather information while out in the field TO HELP WARN AND SAVE YOUR LIFE, I'll be sure to remember your unappreciation for their efforts. Most of the "confirmed tornado" reports you hear from your local news and weather services come from ground reports -- from these storm chasers. Maybe you should delve in cognition before making assumptions that these people are out to cheat death. You "cheat" death every day, yourself.

SUV/High center of gravity + High Winds = easy to flip...be careful and know your vehicles and how the weather affects them! I highly dislike how today it is who can get the closest shots of a tornado...without being killed. I'd rather footage from 2 miles away and an unharmed chaser, than super up close footage and a dead chaser.
Love how you edited out the part right before you actually rolled over. Your story about trying to back up doesn't fit the video. Looks like you actually got too close this time. Good work. You make the rest of us chasers look bad.
Oh, and by the way. Next time leave a note so local fire/ems isn't out looking for your dumb ass.
@GMoore34 they showed the whole video on the twc & he was backing up. even if you don't agree with what he's doing, you must feel high & mighty sitting behind a computer & calling someone a dumbass, especially when he has proven many times that he is not. you can not like something but there is no need for name calling.
@kaseymariewithak Listen. I'm a paramedic and storm photographer. I'm one of those people who would have been out looking for him. I didn't call him a "dumbass". Go back and read. What he did was very inconsiderate and amateur, as far as leaving the car. I've met Andy multiple times. I like his work. Accident or not. This generated bad press.
@GMoore34 Are you entirely delusional? YOUR comment: "Next time leave a note so local fire/ems isn't out looking for YOUR DUMB ASS." But you didn't call him a dumbass???? I mean LOL? I don't care that you're a paramedic or a storm photographer. Your main concern is that he didn't leave a note? Who cares! If you know him, then you would have seen him announce that he was okay & picked up. Sounds like you're just trying to complain in order to feel important. I saw no bad press come out of this.
@kaseymariewithak If you're not smart enough to see that it would be entirely common sense and decency to leave a note on an empty, rolled car that was left near the path of a tornado, than I don't think it makes much sense to try and explain it to you more. EMS/Fire doesn't follow Andy on Twitter, contrary to your simple minded belief. Try really really hard and you might see the big picture someday.
@GMoore34 If you were smart, you'd stop your whining & look at the big picture which he is okay & you're just trying to have a voice on here to seem important. Your opinion is skewed & irrelevent. You were simply trying to start shit by calling him a dumb ass & saying he's lying when the whole video was shown on TWC, which proved he wasn't. I'm done caring about your need to call someone a dumb ass & a liar, which was the whole purpose of me calling you out. I don't care about your "expertise."
@GMoore34 - The facts don't work with your theory. Check out reed Timmers video of the untouched power poles, lines and surrounding area around Andy's vehicle and note it is untouched by a tornado, yet you think it managed to flip Andy's Nissan. You sir, give a bad name to youself only. Carry on.
the reason he flipped because he was driving backwards and its much harder to keep controll of your vehicle driving backwards especially in an suv in 100mph winds. Power steering pompe can be overloaded and quit working temporally (i can do this in my work van by driving backwards and cut the wheels all of a sudden while turning.)

I don't need any more near death thrills. I have enough of them in my life without willfully putting myself at deaths doorstep.
There is nothing 'ambiguous' about the term that is widely used (not mine) 'storm chaser'.
Clearly these guys, as shown in this video, are chasing storms, specifically tornadoes, in their vehicles.
Words mean things. Refer to things what they are, and these guys are chasing storms to cheat death.
It's in their voices.
