Wrex was better.

All Grunt can do is shoot, and take damage. Wrex could do both of those things, but he also had biotic abilities. In comparison, Grunt is lacking for a "perfect krogan".

I love the way Grunt is designed. No wrinkles on his face, since he's basically an adolescent, those badass blue eyes, and his crest which is like little stones all over his forehead. He's an appropriate replacement for Wrex, considering Wrex has a species to rule.
