@DarkLord0fHell I just read an article in a ww 2 book that said that while the u-boats were made in sections, the rockets of Werner von Braun were made in a similar fashion for the 'wonder weapons' that Hitler planned to win the war with. It stated that the hulls of the u-boats, and the rocket bodies could be interchanged. It didn't elaborate much further, but I am thinking that maybe the germans were planning on sending remote controlled underwater missles at the allies. Thanks for your reply.
Therefore the boat could be re-assembled at a later date. Also, when these boats were made, the boat sections could be interchanged with other boats of the same class if they wanted to use two badly damaged boats to make one out of them.
I could be wrong about this, however, I have done a lot of studying about u-boats, and it looks to me as if the boat wasn't cut into five pieces, but dis-assembled into that many pieces. If you look at pictures of the boatyards that made these submarines, you can see that a lot of the boats were made in sections and then put together on an assembly line of sorts. So, it looks like the boats were taken apart at their sectional joints instead of being cut apart.

I now it would be very expensive, but they should try to put it back on the water...that would be the best tribute to all these people that lost lives on U-boats during second World War...
not only cutting this beauty up kills me but also everytime i read about that god forsaken moronic "operation daylight " i have to switch to another book, can you imagine the amount of steel, copper tubing, wire etc etc that could have been put to some use is now in the bottom of the ocean rotting away, ill never understand.
This is the biggest cock up of preserving history for years... The ones who decided this are stupid idiotic twats... A U-Boat is worth MILLIONS .. yet they cut her up just for stupid disabled people who probably haven't got the slightest fucking interest in WW2.... I can even bet money they haven't had one fucking disabled person visit it!!
The ones who decided this .. well i hope they rot in hell for killing history and upsetting uboat veterans alike!
I was genuinely upset by this; anyone with even a remote interest in U-Boats would be. These people are butchers. Cutting up one of the last remaining U-Boats for the benefit of some slack-jawed tourists? If you want to see what it's like inside a submarine, go and see the Alliance in Portsmouth. Shame on them. It says everything about the shallowness of the modern world.
So tragic they chopped it up.. Why the hell didnt the Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport preserve it with their collection..??? Madness... And as for some people claiming it was chopped up for disabled access, RUBBISH .... HMS Alliance hasn't been chopped up and probably never will be.. The Royal Navy Submarine Museum even state on their website there's no wheelchair access to board HMS Alliance..
The reports I've read say that the ship was chopped into five pieces (two later rejoined) to facilitate her move. Interesting, since many, if not most, U-boats were actually constructed in sections, just like the Liberty and Victory transports,
Like several folks, I had a BAD reaction to cutting up a WW2 sub, until I read up a little on it. It'd been sunk, and lay on the ocean floor for almost 50 years before being raised, so, no, they didn't take a brand new WW2 sub and destroy it to make it wheelchair accessible. I suppose it's possible for someone to reassemble it (two sections have been) and efforts made to restore it. I haven't found ANYTHING about disability acts. It's on display but NOT open for on-board tours.
@carl23401 when the raised the u-boat it was one piece then they cut it. I don't know why maybe because they wanted easier access to each compartment, but it's a pitty.
@Foxtrot262 calmdown, they had to take it apart to preserve it, australia did the same on the sub sunk in sydney,as it was rusting away from the inside out.
I wonder what the world would think if we raised the Hood,, and cut her up to put on display.. they are even trying to raise the grafspee.. wheather men died or not, it shows disrespect to do such acts. I wish germany would try to do the same, and see what the worlds reaction would be.. I have a feeling it would make international news..
All the crew escaped to safety(some of them already from the bottom-using scuba gear), although three of them died from exposure in the rough seas before being rescued. They also managed to shoot down one of the two attacking B-24 Liberators, killing its entire crew, right before being sunk by the other one...
Came across this by accident - looking for stuff about the b'head - dee marsh iron ore trains. Lets just go and chop up all sorts of histoically important machinery so people can have a look - this is plain wrong - there are books photos, videos,etc...... those pricks from mersey travel should be sliced in half with the diamond wire cutter starting between the bollocks and working up!
not only is it a shame cutting it up the design for the display rubbish also, all pieces should have been kept under roof and in line so you could see down the segments, perhaps with a mezzanine viewing deck @ deck level with deck access, which their isn't in the current scheme
this is a shame, in this world of modern technology, it would have been easier to restore this to working order, and build a wooden mock up/ virtual submarine so the disabled could see what it was like inside, and we could have been having a cruise to the isle of man and back. (on the surface mind)..
Why cut her up for fu**ing wheel chairs! absolute bu*ls*i* such a rare and amazing machine cut up for fu**ing wheelchair access! if they want wheel chair access go to Germany and see U-995! its not that hard! then U-534 would still be all in one piece hopefully even ready for restoration !
whats better?
A cut up now worthless bit of metal or a complete priceless uboat??!
this is really a shame about cutting this sub up, I know its expensive but look what they did with the u 505. A salute to the Americans,, way to go guys.

"The U-boat was the first submarine in the world.."???!? What the fuck??? I think Leonardo Da Vinci would have something to say about that, not to mention the American Bushnell's Turtle, used in the Revolutionary War!!!
This looks some ancient ritual of a primitive tribe: once you have killed your enemy, cut him up, eat him or display him, so he won´t resurrect and be able get at you again.
A guy in this (v=JeCJu5mjE0I) vid says that they couldn't keep it in one piece because of the disability discrimination act and that not everyone could get inside. Well I say F-them. It's not a reason to DESTROY a piece of history. What a bunch of total A-holes thought up this idea and that act. What's next? We're going to get rid of everything that disabled people can't do? I'm sorry for them, but that's just the way things go. It's called DISABLED for a reason-you're not able to do everything.
The sub is on permanent exhibition in Birkenhead and I have to admit that the internal workings of the sub can be viewed in comfort and by everyone.
I am still puzzled why the sub and the other historic ships still based in birkenhead were never moved to the Liverpool maritime museum. There is plenty of space for them and they would be a fantastic additional attraction.
My thoughts exactly. The only consolation I could think of is that hopefully they cut her precisely, like a surgeon, and perhaps one day she could be stitched back together?
The owners of the Uboat and several other vessels in Wallasey went into administration last year and there was no space for them to display the Uboat as the owners of the land it was on wanted to develop the area.
The sheer cost of storing such a large vessel meant they had to cut it into sections for easier transport.
I think myself-as a U.S. military vet ARMY- 4 years active. Any military vessel from any country that is sank in the sea should be left undisturbed whether or not a loss of life is involved but especially if there were lives lost. Where it settles should be its final resting place. ESPECIALLY when there are human remains, out of respect for the dead and if no human remains- should be left there for the respect to the men that served aboard them. Not raised and cut up for"health and safety"
Had nothing to do with health and safety, it was simply much cheaper to transport it when in pieces. It would also be difficult for everyone to actually get into and view the sub if it wasn't cut.
i am just sick on what they did. how dare they ruin it. it was intact and should have been kept that way. real dumb asses. and i thought us amercans only did stupid things. this takes the cake. i puke on your idea. assholes! $o
This is just like the Southron government, no respect for history. First they wanted to build a wind farm on the battlefield at Sheriffmuir (upon which my ancestors gave their lives fighting English imperialism), and now they are taking what is in effect the grave of a good number of German sailors and cutting it into pieces. And as someone said earlier, they're caving to Islamic fundamentalists left and right. I'm glad we left the Union in 1776, we don't pull crap like this.
It seems your knowledge of contemporary British politics is as flawed as your understanding of British history perhaps if you expanded your world view beyond Fox News and Mel Gibson movies you might not embarass yourself so. The British government is dominated by Scots including the PM,more Scots fought against the Jacobites than for them and no German sailors died on U534 which was sunk after the war anyway other than that a good effort .
They cut the Uboat up but they let islamic savages come to England have freedom of speach to spout terrorism breed like rats and live on the dole. Go figure?
@jers59 wow dude you guys really hate them, but you've been invaded longer than us Americans, we are considered "unamerican" if we make statements like that. So much for our 1st amendment rights. freedom of speech. labeled hate speech it is a crime. sad huh ?
What was it they used to say in Yes Minister...... "That was a brave decision!"
There's a fully working Lancaster bomber in Lincs, perhaps it could be cut into big pieces as well, and we could all be issued with little health and safety hard hats incase we bump our little heads.
No wonder this country is going down the pan, the lunatics are incharge of the asylum!
@darrras2 I have words for you .thats what it feels like to be treated unfairly because disabled people would only be able to see it in photo's also the disabled are getting attacked about this but the truth is health and safety would not have alowed anyone into the boat without some changes anyway so this was the only option.
@darrras2 calling names so i am gessing i am talking to a child .and there is only one mona lisa .there are quite a few options for us to see u.boats .but i am not going to get into a playground squabble. you are intitled to your narrow minded opinion.and remember your only one car crash away from needing that disability act.so think on.
What the fuck?! First they manage to raise a real ww2 nazi u-boat - then, they destroy it completely. Similarly they could put explosives on Sphinx, so that people with wheelchairs could see what's inside. If these idiots could raise Titanic, they would cut it in pieces then sell it on eBay.
I turns out that the museum it was held at has closed and its in peices for shipping to another museum. They couldn't afford to ship it whole. The thing that sucks is that they wont be putting it back togather so people can look at it easier.
I dont fucking believe this, i signed a petition that went to downing street, and got a reply that it wasnt there problem. Only just found out they have actualy gone ahead and done it. I hate this country at times. hate it.
Bloody vandals. The desk jockeys responsible for this should be taken out of and given a damn good thrashing. For sure, it was a shame that those of impaired mobility could not see inside but what next? Why not make West Kennet long barrow more wheelchair friendly? Why not put lifts into all of our ancient castles and monuments and to hell with the destruction. Is HMS Belfast wheelchair friendly? Or the Victory? (seriously - are they? I don't know) Typical short term thinking. A bloody disgrace.
Nothing is impossible where there is a will. Could this have been moved to a new home in one piece? Of course it could with a bit of funding. What was the point of raising her if only after a few years she would be butchered like this? If this was an ancient monument these swine would have been hung out to dry. Why were the IWM not interested?
Imagine cutting up any other boat in this way?! I suspect because of its connection with Nazi Germany that it did not receive necessary support. If that is the case you might as well deny the Second World War ever happened - the history of an opponent is also our own and part of the story.
I suspect it is down to money and to blame the Disability Discrimination Act is just a cop-out. I wouldn't want to deny anyone a chance to tour this boat but I'm sure there would have been a better way of allowing this.
lol because it would take a long time getting people into the u boat by using a crane to get them on board and i doubt a 70 year old could crawl up a torpedo tube
That's what they did to U-505 in Chicago, they just cut a few holes in the sides and used them as doors. Minimal damage or desecration to this historic artifact, and it was fully accessible, even for the disabled. This PC "Disability Discrimination Act" BS is just a load of crap, I'm sure the idiots who made this decision had ulterior motives.
How was it transported to Liverpool? By ship. Put it back on a ship and transport it to a different location for the museum, one more accessible to a port. It doesn't have to be in Liverpool, after all. This decision was probably made by some local politician who thought it would bring tourism to his city/district, and thus money into his wallet, or to pacify the screaming hordes of the PC-obsessed, whining about the disabled and now destroying a historical relic. Great.
hoo it's the stupid hoo cut this u-boat i kill him it's a vreri bad thing o coo this ting to one mor left do it's wans to cut end that one the stupid hoos comand tu cut this submarin must be punish it's the greit submarin on his time its must bee in a musiem full not cut damn man im sory for his soul, wee the romanins wee make a game whits this submarin it's call Silent Hunter, game its have four versions the compani it's mace this game its call Ubi Soft it's a great game, good bye sub im sorry :((

This its terrible... afortunely theres another U boot who its entire, not so good preserverd, but its still in one piece :)
All always say there would be only 22 WWII submarines from Germany. But there are 3! U-534, U-505 and U-995 in Germany near Kiel in Laboe! But why they U-534 not repaired so U-534 can use it again as a museum that I do not understand.
i cant believe it theres only two in existance out of water this WAS one the other is in america u505 and what do we do chop it up its a disgrace.this country {england} has gone to pot. i am ashamed to be british.

The disibility discrimination act states the following:-
It is unlawful in the case of a disabled person , to discriminate against him— .
(a)
in the way it affords him access to a benefit, facility or service; .
(b)
by refusing or deliberately omitting to afford him access to a benefit, facility or service;
. If the plan to let the general public onto the boat, means cutting it up; you have to worry about what is being planned for HMS Victory etc.

Had nothing to do with health and safety, it was simply much cheaper to transport it when in pieces. It would also be difficult for everyone to actually get into and view the sub if it wasn't cut.
bullseye2121 2 years ago
Moving it was too hard, that's the only excuse they have for doing this.

i am just sick on what they did. how dare they ruin it. it was intact and should have been kept that way. real dumb asses. and i thought us amercans only did stupid things. this takes the cake. i puke on your idea. assholes!

MacRaeWarrior 2 years ago
It seems your knowledge of contemporary British politics is as flawed as your understanding of British history perhaps if you expanded your world view beyond Fox News and Mel Gibson movies you might not embarass yourself so. The British government is dominated by Scots including the PM,more Scots fought against the Jacobites than for them and no German sailors died on U534 which was sunk after the war anyway other than that a good effort .

Stupid wankers who did this.
Money enough for all kinds of bulshit but for history.....Sorry .

I just cant belive it... German U-boat cutted into pieces because of fucking disability act. I just have no words.
darrras2 3 years ago 34
@darrras2 Well they aren't something great they are old killing machinces from the losers
DaManzMoney 1 year ago
@darrras2 I have words for you .thats what it feels like to be treated unfairly because disabled people would only be able to see it in photo's also the disabled are getting attacked about this but the truth is health and safety would not have alowed anyone into the boat without some changes anyway so this was the only option.
blobby1972 1 year ago
@blobby1972 And I have words for you. PRINT BRAILLE ALPHABET LETTERS ON DA VINCI "MONALISA" SO THAT BLIND PEOPLE COULD SEE IT YOU IDIOT !!!!!!!!
darrras2 1 year ago 8
@darrras2 calling names so i am gessing i am talking to a child .and there is only one mona lisa .there are quite a few options for us to see u.boats .but i am not going to get into a playground squabble. you are intitled to your narrow minded opinion.and remember your only one car crash away from needing that disability act.so think on.

one of only four or so surviving u boats and they go and cut it up,what a waste, and it cost thousands to raise it from the sea bed.

What the fuck?! First they manage to raise a real ww2 nazi u-boat - then, they destroy it completely. Similarly they could put explosives on Sphinx, so that people with wheelchairs could see what's inside. If these idiots could raise Titanic, they would cut it in pieces then sell it on eBay.
puute 3 years ago
I turns out that the museum it was held at has closed and its in peices for shipping to another museum. They couldn't afford to ship it whole. The thing that sucks is that they wont be putting it back togather so people can look at it easier.
LycanValvaro 3 years ago
they are dumb has hell they could of have made it working again
jrm5560 3 years ago
I dont fucking believe this, i signed a petition that went to downing street, and got a reply that it wasnt there problem. Only just found out they have actualy gone ahead and done it. I hate this country at times. hate it.
winchuni22 3 years ago
Bloody vandals. The desk jockeys responsible for this should be taken out of and given a damn good thrashing. For sure, it was a shame that those of impaired mobility could not see inside but what next? Why not make West Kennet long barrow more wheelchair friendly? Why not put lifts into all of our ancient castles and monuments and to hell with the destruction. Is HMS Belfast wheelchair friendly? Or the Victory? (seriously - are they? I don't know) Typical short term thinking. A bloody disgrace.
taff1976 3 years ago 4
I heard there were plans on selling the victory.
joness105639 3 years ago
Nothing would surprise me.
Nothing is impossible where there is a will. Could this have been moved to a new home in one piece? Of course it could with a bit of funding. What was the point of raising her if only after a few years she would be butchered like this? If this was an ancient monument these swine would have been hung out to dry. Why were the IWM not interested?
taff1976 3 years ago 2
so what will thay end up doing with it?
racecardriver467 3 years ago
Imagine cutting up any other boat in this way?! I suspect because of its connection with Nazi Germany that it did not receive necessary support. If that is the case you might as well deny the Second World War ever happened - the history of an opponent is also our own and part of the story.
moffedillen0000 3 years ago
no its cos of the disability discrimination act
ther making it into a museum but the EU wont let them keep it intact
britishpatriot01 3 years ago
I suspect it is down to money and to blame the Disability Discrimination Act is just a cop-out. I wouldn't want to deny anyone a chance to tour this boat but I'm sure there would have been a better way of allowing this.
moffedillen0000 3 years ago
well the only way to fit a wheelchair would be in pieces cos you aint gonna get a wheelchair down the ladder of the conning tower
plus they need to move the u boat across liverpool and a full length one would be near impossible
britishpatriot01 3 years ago
why not just hoist them down the tower then..or make a door in the side of the hull, heck why not use the torpedo barrel, forgot what it is called..
icefighter35 2 years ago
lol because it would take a long time getting people into the u boat by using a crane to get them on board and i doubt a 70 year old could crawl up a torpedo tube
burnleyboy01 2 years ago
and have you been to liverpool?
people who have will know that it would be impossible to move a full u boat across the city
burnleyboy01 2 years ago
no I havnt. but at least they could bolt it back together when they get to the museum, then make a door in the back where people wont see it.
icefighter35 2 years ago
you couldnt put a secret door onto it lol
1. it would be at least 2 feet thick
2. people are bound to see it
3. theres no space to put the u boat back together
burnleyboy01 2 years ago
how hard can it be? they should give the job to top gear..or maybe not..
icefighter35 2 years ago
its not that its the fact that there is no room to put a full u boat so they have to split it into three
burnleyboy01 2 years ago
That's what they did to U-505 in Chicago, they just cut a few holes in the sides and used them as doors. Minimal damage or desecration to this historic artifact, and it was fully accessible, even for the disabled. This PC "Disability Discrimination Act" BS is just a load of crap, I'm sure the idiots who made this decision had ulterior motives.
MacRaeWarrior 2 years ago 4
ffs for the 1000 time
if you have been to this city you will know their is know way you can move it intact from the docks to the museum
burnleyboy01 2 years ago 2
How was it transported to Liverpool? By ship. Put it back on a ship and transport it to a different location for the museum, one more accessible to a port. It doesn't have to be in Liverpool, after all. This decision was probably made by some local politician who thought it would bring tourism to his city/district, and thus money into his wallet, or to pacify the screaming hordes of the PC-obsessed, whining about the disabled and now destroying a historical relic. Great.

I´m sorry, i mean 2 submarines from Germany!
MantaFan1992 3 years ago
All always say there would be only 22 WWII submarines from Germany. But there are 3! U-534, U-505 and U-995 in Germany near Kiel in Laboe! But why they U-534 not repaired so U-534 can use it again as a museum that I do not understand.
I´m from Germany, sry for my bad English!
MantaFan1992 3 years ago
i cant believe it theres only two in existance out of water this WAS one the other is in america u505 and what do we do chop it up its a disgrace.this country {england} has gone to pot. i am ashamed to be british.
