  • your technique is ridiculous....great phrasing man I can really hear the Greg Howe influence

  • Beautiful tone and great note choice, Tom! BTW, do you recall what amplifier you were playing this through at the time you did the demo and if you were using any effects pedals? Cheers!

  • skill wise: wow .. emotion wise: horrible .. this has no feeling, its as if your just playing modes and patterns all over the guitar, not very impressive to me. Sorry

  • @SexDrugsGuitar - What do we know about what he feels when he's playing? I think most musicians has feeling for what they do. If what he does doesn't make YOU feel anything is an entirely different matter. A matter of taste. Music we like makes us feel something when we hear it. If we don't like someone's playing, it's a matter of personal opinion, and we shouldn't project that into the artist. BTW; I like this, and for me it has great feeling :) Just my 2 cents :)

  • @SexDrugsGuitar Maybe you are from these "blues" or "rock" "guitar guys" who are too lazy to learn something new ...

  • realy funky solo flawlesly played just awesome

  • One day...one day.... haha

  • but imo toms style of playing is cooler

  • in 08 Gustavo guerra (think that's his name) won, he can shred!

  • Well done man great playing!

  • DavidMeShow gets 19 million views and this guy only has 38 thousand?! whats wrong with the world?!

  • @Punisher9696 You are absolutely right my friend... Tom is a guitar diamond!

  • why dont you tell us your name so we know who we are hearing?

You sound wonderful.. but who are you mystery brother? :)

  • @awesomejohnnet Tom Quayle

  • amazing mate.

  • dude, who are you??!!

  • you're so friggin good i can not get enough of your stuff!! anyone know if he has albums out?

  • Tom you are quickly going to the top of my best guitarist list. I discovered you through infinite guitar and i'm having a blast with your lessons. Can you give us some tips about soloing continuity? That's where I'm struggling right now. Thanks man!

  • @junyna17 what do you mean soloing continuity? like fluid soloing?

  • U r one sick guitar player... love it!

  • woow that's some funky shit bro..GREAT!!.:D...great jazz skills.

  • is that an ibanez S series? nice playing,, nice finish too

  • better than thamarat

  • @bojorquez1234 10X better.

  • very graceful, wonderful phrasing, immaculate technique...quite a great player!

  • seriously, there are some fucking god like players out there that are just not even known... its just amazing.. this guys one of them..

  • @mememememe1980s alot of guys that are really great, don't care about being famous etc, it's about playing, having fun and being cool.

  • this video never fails to blow me away

  • Such a shame it didnt get the first place. Dont understand why Greg made such a mistake (and i love the sob). I heard this bout a 100 times and it doesnt cease to amaze me. U R the man !!!

  • i really enjoy your playin'!!!!

    so NICE.....

    Michèle

  • good men

    i like

  • do you use holdsworth legato;

    ie no pulloffs?

  • Definitely looks Holdsworthian

  • nice legato man...

  • I have a similar guitar, but it's blue grey and lacks the single coil in the middle. It's an Ibanez.

Now, how does one go about learning to play fusion like this? Where do you start?

I love the style, but it confuses me.

  • Learn some funky chords (not actual funk, mind you, I just mean weird and spacy), learn to arpeggiate them, and learn how to incorporate all kinds of different intervals in your playing. It's a shitload of theory, and I am nowhere close to understanding it either.

  • Appreciated!

  • tom can u make a video of some of the sequences and ideas ur using as far as the hybrid picking goes? love the way it sounds

  • Not my kind of music, But your playing ability is undeniably impressive!

Nice guitar too! Looks like a Ibanez S320

  • no it doesn't! :D S320 looks totally different. that guitar is 50 million times more beautiful.

  • great job!

when i first heard you play in another vid i could tell by your awesome licks and tone that you were a Greg Howe fan! Good to see someone else listens to good music and appreciates his talent!

  • bluesy jazz funky rock AWESOME

    hard to describe

sounds like something i'd play at a lounge

  • is that a washburn ? :)

  • I think more an Ibanez S Series

  • i saw a guitar which looks exactly like that at my local guitar shop, which is a washburn.

  • really, you are a master, please... i think that everyone wants....... make a video..... the master class video tom quayle. please please

  • those legatos sure are killer

  • That was cool funky Jazzy guitar playing, you rock my friend,5 *****..Marc Jones-Vocalist..Los Angeles,U.S.A.

  • You are an awesomely talented player...

    love it!

    gotta know:

where did you get the guitar, it's a Gamble model right... I love the paint

  • No its an Ibanez Prestige S body.

  • Well, Gambale used a yellow S body.....so you're right in that it's not a signature model but Ulmo is right in that it's the same type of guitar, an S

  • You should hook up with Gary Husband

and Gary Willis that had been a killer trio!

  • Tom....what the hell is happening from 0:59 to 1:07????? Are you using your pick at all or is that your middle finger exclusively?? Please enlighten....and can you please come down to London to do some clinics...will pay serious money :)

  • Looks like a legato run with hybrid picking. Check out Bret Garsed solos, they r full of that stuf. I got some vids on the way from his live in athens 2 days ago.

    :-)

  • Thanks Tom Quayle!! I am now officially suicidal!!

  • DAMN DUDE IS KILLING!!!

  • i watch this everyday

  • Ye)) Cool )!

  • god those licks would be so tasty if you incorporated some more bending. still great feel though on those slower licks.

  • me llega como tocas!!(your playing is dope!)

  • dude, your technique is incredible.

  • this is fricking phenomenal. and i usually rag on 98% of the players i see online

  • There was me thinking you were a nice guy Mr. Coggin :D

  • ha- im actually not chad, notice i always describe the videos in 3rd person. just found his videos useful when i was learning lead! i took my videos down due to a stalker :S

  • GOD! You've got the jazz in you dude! :D

Amazing feel. I love how you blend the major and the pentatonic stuff. Wonderful!

  • what exactly did you study to get lines like those????

    dvd,play along,teacher, who??????

    great playing by the way.

  • theory unlock a new world +time and effort

  • Really great chops & feel my man! Very Greg Howe-ish! Nice smooth tone! Nice string skipped arpeggios at the 1:20 mark!

    Loved It!

  • The student becomes the master! The FORCE is strong with this one.

  • greg Work! uppssss I say Great Work! =)

  • Good!! do you have a myspace account?

  • Fantastic Tom!!... could listen to you all day.

  • Thumbs down!

  • i love your hybrid picking and how you paste your self instead of showing off how complex you can play

    you should of won Imo!

  • cool!

  • this makes me want to go learn stuff man. this is so awesome. it sounds like greg howe and guthrie govan. you are so much better than that other dude who won guitar idol. awesome tone and playing. Phrasing is top notch, and you show those short bits of speed, but it's not speed all the time. I hope you become famous because I'll be there to buy your cd. :)

  • Tom you blew my mind huh haha nice guitaring buddy yah liked this as i told you see ppl are sayin here you are the winner in comments now put on some blues yah as your next video steps i will help you in that and some calssical stuffs like i did wanna hear from you adding some diminished lines over some complicated chords anyways kiddin out enjoy call you back soon sorry to post take care peace steven.

  • eccellente!!!!

  • absolutely mindblowing, i would by the cd immediately, as tasty as Howe himself

  • Excellent piece. Yep - Tom's style rather than Andy's would seem more 'relevant' to Greg. Each to their own re. who they prefer but please keep things in perspective. Andy James most certainly is NOT an average shredder. He turned in a blistering performance on PFM II. Sure, there are some 1-Dimensional speedsters out there but Andy really mixed it up, varying the pace with bagloads of feel and amazing precision. Back to Tom - and all credit. Can't we have 2 winners?

  • MUCH BETTER Than the winner! Sorry, IMHO, this cat is a SUPER SYNTHESYSM of Greg and Guthrie Govan!!!

    Very TASTY!!!

  • Besides you have GOT TO LOVE a player that uses an Ibanez S....PRICELESS!

  • how can i learn play like that???

  • *quits guitar*

    your amazin man

  • Dont wanna be a hater but the guy who won is like a really average shredder. Did not expect that AT ALL! So many people were waaaaay better including obviously you. i mean comon to play jazz fusion requires so much more musical knowledge, skill and talent than "neoclassical shred". I still can't beleive Greg's choice about the winner.

  • To each his own, but I think they are both great!

  • I agree latenight fan... Totally!

  • I have to agree that Greg's choice is surprising. I find your style much more interesting an in keeping with Greg's music over Andy James. Make no mistake though, Andy is awesome but there are plenty of guys on youtube playing like that but not so many playing the way you do. I just wanted you to know that other guitarists out there appreciate what you're doing and think you would have been a more worthy winner. Nice one mate!!

  • you are the winner¡

  • man, for me you are the winner of the play for me 2 contest, I prefer your style and I think that is more difficult,it is not all about speed. You sound more like you are improvising, (because it was an improvising contest, wasn't it?), I'm a bit disappointed with Greg's new album and with the contest, anyway congratulations for the 2nd position, Ces from Spain

  • Thanks for that! The whole thing is improvised. Nothing worked out before hand - just the chord progression. I've yet to get the album. Hoping I like it!

  • or he might just be sweep picking when it looks like hes not strumming

  • wow that was amazing but it look almost like your not even strum that or your just using so little movement that it looks like that

  • please post more vids¡

  • You are monster Tom!! :-) Congratulations on Guitar Idol, you really deserve it man, the world has to hear those amazing skills of yours. I didn´t participated because I believed all the strenght came from the votes...silly me! Anyway, with such reunion of talents I would be bitting the dust...maybe next year...or next decade! xDD

    All the best,

    Paco

  • For some reason i can't stop watching this :)

  • ahead of all others for me

probably even better with a less conventional chord progression !!!

    joe

  • cool man!

hey where you got that ibanez S?

i dont see it on Ibanez catalog.

and as I'm concerned Ibanez don't do custom models...well at least for us,mortals..

Thanks man!I voted for you..good look!

  • it's an s2075-fw. They made it a couple of years ago. It was the top of the range S series at the time. It's a great guitar but I'm planning on replacing it with a custom made guitar from Xotic. Like the one Allen Hinds plays.

  • Thanks for the vote by the way!!!

  • post this one for the greg hoiwe contest¡

  • I agree with Miguel. Your phrasing is outstanding.

    2:19-2:24 is absolutely brilliant!

  • Great
