They are both amazing artists. I honestly don't see how Tori rips Kate off seeing as they both differ in the types of music they make, the way they sing and their lyrical content.
Except Tori does rip Kate Bush off in every facet. Tori wears the same clothes on stage, does the same moves that Kate Bush did, sings like her, has similar lyrics even has Kate's beliefs in fairies.
Tori is just annoying as hell and still trying to pass herself off as Kate Bush.
hahaha! thats so funny! i love how kates face turns into the sound monster from the Experiment IV video!
I love both ladies, actually all three if you're including regina spektor. Its so stupid this competition between the fans - who is the best/most original etc.
Who cares! Life's too short to worry about things like that!
by the way... I'm not REALLY judging you. Everyone is entitled to their own take on things, and you've made a lot of good points. I just like to argue even though I know I'll never win.
If Tori is supposed to "give credit" to Kate, then I guess Kate better give credit to Elton John, David Bowie and showtunes to name just a few of the people she could be accused of copying if we're going to use that kind of logic. at least if you're going to be that way, be fair about it and don't apply one standard to one artist while you let the other get away with it. unkool.
Kate has done so. She's mentioned Elton and Bowie and Captain Beefheart and Joni and more. Some she's even mentioned in song. So, actually, has Tori. She's mentioned Kate now several times in interviews.
Okay, beefheart. I remember reading that once. Elton I never heard mentioned until the Rocket Man cover, and Bowie I never heard mentioned until Mojo... but if you say it, I do believe it. And glad to know it. I always thought it was bizarre that these clear influences got overlooked so much of the time. At least that's how it seemed.
I can't really say I've ever listened to Kate Bush's music as much as I have Tori's, I think in fact I have a Tori Amos obsession. But, God, does this make me laugh!!
I'm sorry, but that's simply untrue. Please do a bit more research. Not only has Kate mentioned Bowie in glowing terms in the past, she recently wrote and submitted a whole article about him at the request of Mojo magazine...no small praise indeed! She has also been very kind about Peter Gabriel's influence -- she has acknowledged that he introduced her to the Fairlight, I believe, a few times.
I guess I think you're showing your bias when you say it's "kind" of her to mention her influences. Why is that kind? On several of these pages Tori gets slandered for not mentioning Kate ENOUGH and Kate is "kind" because she manages to mention someone once or twice. I've never seen Peter mentioned except in relation to them working together, and it always seemed like a major oversight. I'm glad to know he has been given a nod. And I also think that in the mid-late 80s HE was influenced by her.
No, I used "kind" because she known for being very gracious (instead of ever dissing someone, she has chosen uncomfortable silence and a wan smile to tell interviewers to move on). This is the reason I used "kind" and I can think of no interview where she was unkind.
By the way, Peter Gabriel is thanked for "opening the windows" on Kate's NFE album when he didn't even work on it (so much better than a mention in an interview), and was mentioned several other times...
but you weren't talking about kindness in relation to dissing, you were talking about it in relation to giving props. Kate was "kind" to mention an influence while Tori isn't kind because she doesn't mention Kate as much as you want her to, at the times you want her to, and in the way you want her to. And by the by: Silence and a wan smile can be superior and ungenerous as fuck (not that I think hers is).
Hers isn't...and I know exactly how I meant the word "kind," thanks. When Kate mentions someone, she's usually quite generous about it.
I've never said Tori wasn't kind about mentioning Kate, although to be honest, the "kindness" came long after the following Tori comments, which, yes, dampened the kind quotient for me quite a bit:
"Yeah, I guess we could do each other's songs."
"Sometimes I want to tell her to stop screaming, there's no mouse."
loliteGhost, you cannot win this argument with sheer chutzpah. You say Kate hasn't mentioned her influences. But she has. You say not early enough. But she did. You say Tori's mentioned Kate often and kindly. Well lately, yes, but first she acted as if she didn't know who Kate was, then made the sad comments above, finally offering props in the late 90s. You say there's fan bias and there simply isn't: They've approached this issue differently, but not in the way you'd prefer to think they have.
No, I'm saying that Kate hasn't mentioned influences ENOUGH to warrant YOU judging HER as "gracious" and "kind" while at the same time YOU are judging TORI as "odd" for not mentioning Kate sufficiently. I'm not judging either one of them. I'm just judging you.
I know you are, but unfairly, illogically and aNgRiLy as it turns out.
When I say "gracious & kind" I absolutely DO mean the tone of her words, not just the fact that she said them. And comparing the way they've handled the issue, I can say that I love Tori, but she botched it. Badly. It's not bias towards one of two equal behaviors, it's recognizing that the behaviors are different. Why scramble to find excuses for her amBushes? And isn't doing so offering your own bias and judgement of Kate?
Also, know that I personally haven't said that Tori hasn't mentioned Kate "sufficiently." I'm not sure who, if anyone has said that word, but I'm totally placated by "She blew me away" and "I was moved by her as a producer." Maybe others aren't, but that sounded quite nice to me. My only issue was with the initial handling of the situation; I disagree with you on who was more influenced by the musicians mentioned (Kate->Tori or Bowie->Kate), so her comments did seem odd and particularly hurtful.
Okay, agreed, the mouse comment is not nice. But the other two depend entirely on tone. How can you possibly know how she said it? Press people are good at spinning things and selectively quoting things. Who knows what other things were said that got cut out the tone of voice she said those things in. I'll grant you the mouse one, but the other two I think you might be reading into. just a guess though. maybe she WAS being mean. I just don't see how you can know that for sure.
I lol'd so hard when they mentioned Regina at the end. I'm a fan of all 3 of them.
Of course there are similarities in their work... but if you sit down and listen to them one by one, it's easy to tell the difference. Sure Tori was inspired by Kate Bush, but she doesn't outright copy her. Just like Regina was inspired by Tori but her music is completely different!
Everyone "copies" some of the people who came before them. If they were both men, no one would even notice. They're not exactly the same. Tori is much more piano-focused than Kate, and she's arguably had more great albums.
Also Tori doesn't admit that she's one of the biggest Kate fangirls out there and has listened to every album secretly and tried to find which bits are good for copying!
Thanks to the makers of this vid for a good laugh - very creative, well done. You must have worked very hard on this! As for the ongoing Kate vs. Tori debate - how about making a "Fan Wars clip" next? With plenty of sequels :)

Tori's a huge phony. She stole 2 tracks from Kate's Aerial on American Dull Pos. See the colours changinnnggg. Or somesuch.
There's a track called Digital Ghost which is a dollarstore version of A Deeper Understanding.
Then you read interviews about her, and she's like:"My songs come from the stars, I'm a true original. MY SONGS are LIVING entities whispering into my spine."
They're both great, but not all that similar. I mean, their lyrics are just totally different styles.
Compare their first songs off of their first albums - Wuthering Heights and Crucify. If you can't see the vocal, lyrical, and musical opposities there, I can't help you.
I was looking forward to this clash of the female titans, but it didn't live up. The sketch needs a really good editor. It goes on far too long, and there aren't any really funny lines.
I don't know Tori Amos's music well enough to judge it - I'll have to listen to more of it - but Kate Bush has impressed me as one of the most original artists of the last few decades.
I like both of them I don't think they ripped off of eachother. If anything Tori tries a lot to be like Joni Mitchell. And Kate lost a lot of her cred after she sold out in the 80's dropped her piano and started running up hills or be chased by hounds of love.
Dude I totally wrote that a long time ago. lol I used to be a total Tori freak. And post comments about an album I knew nothing about. Then I realized Tori's a hack bitch and Kate is way better both as an artist and person.
PS. I found out from my friend's dad who worked stage crew for Tori that when girls threw their heartfelt letters on stage to Tori she had them swept up and thrown in the trash. She's a total cunt.
stfu. both women are absolutely amazing. now call me crazy, but something tells me you're just looking to say stupid shit instead of actually giving both women the respect they deserve
Oh yeah... Thats what I live for telling stories over youtube. Why don't you go listen to Torn Anus and cry about feelings you terrible spanish queen.

She had a dozen artists make a comic book about her. She didn't pay them, she didn't even send them any free copy of the, now ultra rare, book either. Guess she's too busy writing cry along songs denounciating injustice to pay her employees.
The "real enemy": Regina Spektor ha ha, that's the best part! Five years from now people will be fighting saying "how Regina ripped Tori off" (I've already heard people comparing Regina's "Better" with Tori's "Past The Mission" - the videos) ...
Damn right she can sing, just because she has an unusual voice and great range doesn't mean she can't sing. You try singing Wuthering Heights, it ain't easy. You don't know what you're talking about!. She and Tori are both hugely talented, kooky but different....
They're very different. The music doesn't sound the exact same, and they are different women. Kate is very theatrical, I might say, and Tori' spiritual. But I haven't heard about Kate until today. And Tori for a few years now. I dunno, to each his/her own...
Don't be sorry I tottally agree with your comment and cityzenart has obviously no idea what he/she is talking about.
Tori Amos is probably one of the most charitable preformers out there, and the only reason she is always talking about RAINN and Rape and rebelion is because that is what WE people need to hear, lest we forget that it HAPPENS, and let wool be pulled over eyes.
thanks zooloo, I just didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings so I felt bad for my response to cityzenart's comment, he/she has a right to say or think what they want Tori Amos, but this was something I felt I had to point out and explain, but I also don't want my comment to be a bad representation of fans of Tori or Tori herself by it being misunderstood as arrogance or bullying. Thanks.
Oh, I don't see them fighting each other either, I've been A Tori fan since 1996 and i've only heard of Kate Bush 3 months ago, but I really like them both. I thought this video was kind of funny, not too offensive, like a friendly joking on the both of them and it made a nice point towards the end.
I wasn't saying that she lacks compassion in a sense of selfishness... but that her artistry doesn't reflect it... And when your artistry is about being a victim for 15 years it's somewhat self absorbed or pidgeon-holed.
Dude, Tori Amos co-founded RAINN to help victims of abuse in all forms, she's even done a benifit concert for RAINN, and she's done more than she has to by listening to fan's stories of abuse and comforting them, and you have to realize that not everyone can be compassionate 24/7, some people have personal lives that can't always take a backseat to music, tours, or anything else. To ask Tori to do more than she already has would be selfish of all of us.

Tori Amos is always about being a victim or rebelling. She lacks compassion and accountability that might give her some dimension. AWESOME puppet show BTW.
such a compelling rebuttal. I'm not sure if was your self-depricating introduction or the name-calling that has me convinced that Tori Amos is not the shallow, self-absorbed artist I previously claimed her to be.
Great video, made me chuckle! Wonderful job on the puppets. As for Tori & Kate; I love them both. Grew up with Kate's music, then later Tori appeared into vision. They are quite different. Kate has the more quiet sensuality, where Tori's more raw and even sexual. To me they've both been great teachers, as well as in music, vocals AND femininity.
I should also say that it's really interesting to hear the opinion that Kate Bush's last album wasn't promoted. I pressume that means in America? There were adverts for it everywhere in England, as well as magazine and newspaper covers.
Aww, you can't say the puppets are terrible. They do look a lot like them both and are well made... I like both singers and it made me laugh a few times. Kate's best of course :)
I'm a huge fan of both, but I have to say I find it REALLY annoying when Tori talks about how she was a pioneer and how there weren't any female piano singer-songwriter people out there when she made Little Earthquakes, which she says all the time. She's even said that there hadn't been any "since Carole King." She could at least acknowledge Kate Bush when she's making those kinds of statements.
I've never heard her make such grand statements. she often said that the record companies rejected cos the girl with a piano thing was over. Kate was never considered as a 'girl with a piano', even though she could play, and Tori was talking about US record companies, where Kate was not heard of. Tori has acknowledged Kate a number of time, in fact it COULD be argued that Kate has been more disrespectful to Tori than she has to her. However, I adore both.
Kate's only mentioned Tori twice when cornered by interviewers. One was a Rolling Stone article circa 1993. She said she'd heard one song and it was "nice." More recently 'Q' asked her who the best artists of the last 20 years were...and then interjected "Tori Amos?" Kate did not take the bait and made no comment.
The vid was made to be tongue in cheek. No need to get arsey about comparisons which weren't actually made. Tori's more of a traditional songwriter, in the Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Bod Dylan vein. Kate Bush is in the experimental art-rock clan. Like Bjork, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead.
You're right, I wasn't exactly saying that you were the one doing the comparing, but every time I hear the two women's names in the same sentence, there's always some comparison, so I am just kind of irked. One very distinct difference between them seems to be Kate is very literal with her vocal interpretations (like her dance moves) whereas Tori's vocal choices seem more abstract and for the sake of the music.
And ya know, as long as we are making comparisons, Kate Bush sometimes had some "Joni Mitchell" moments in her songs... I guess she ripped her off :J
Anyway my point is, everyone has musical influences and tendencies... Kate Bush is good, and Tori Amos is also good, both were exposed to music at an early age. I hardly believe someone as talented as Tori "ripped" off anyone. I guess two women who use complex chord structures and time signatures can't co-exist in the business.
Well, even in the video, Syrus concedes that the two "don't actually sound that much alike," and that the ones who they should be mad at are the lazy audiences and reviewers that pit their work against each other.
This was pretty hysterical...The only thing that I have to take issue with is the comment from "Tori" calling "Kate" middle-aged...The reality is that they are only five years apart.
That was hilarious. I love them both, but some of those points hit a little too close to home. I just wish you had just made a reference to Kate's lack of output in comparison to Tori's prolific writing ability. "Why should I be jealous?" "Because I can put out 10 albums in the time it takes you to do one!" "And it shows, too." "They're good albums; I'd pit any of mine against any of yours." "I got David Gilmour to play on mine." "I got Adrian Belew to play with me." &c.
Yeah I agree with Dusty. Funny, but to British audiences the dig about Kate's album sales isn't as funny since she sells very well in this country. Some more comparisons between the two would have been funnier.
Because Kate has a cockney twang to her accent anyway - not as obvious as that, but it's still there.
There are some obvious comparisons between Kate and Tori but the reality is they actually don't sound that alike. Tori clearly was heavily influenced by Kate's work but her sound isn't really the same. I'm a big Kate fan, but I appreciate Tori's work too even if I'm not that into her music. I also agree with whoever said Kate sells well in the UK - her albums have sold millions over here.
I love both of these women, and I love the fun you have with both of them ! Great video !

The "real enemy": Regina Spektor ha ha, that's the best part! Five years from now people will be fighting saying "how Regina ripped Tori off" (I've already heard people comparing Regina's "Better" with Tori's "Past The Mission" - the videos) ...
As the blue guy said: people love feuds!! OMFG!
(By the way, I love them three!!)

Kate is far superior to that tori amos thing.
I do stress thing. She totally ripped Kate off and dummed down her sound for the immature American dolts that keep defending her.
berlinwarsaw 4 years ago
Okay, just because you said that, I know that you haven't listened to much of Tori's music.
Probably one or two songs.
I listen to both of them, and in my opinion I believe Tori is much better, musically and lyrically.
Listen to more of Tori's music and I think you'll see that you can't compare them.
RSVibe 4 years ago
if she "dumb" down her sound she certainly improved her lyrics.

clampandbush 4 years ago 2
Tori Amos is way better than Kate Bush, hands down. Kate can't sing...end of story.
cbrey200 4 years ago
Damn right she can sing, just because she has an unusual voice and great range doesn't mean she can't sing. You try singing Wuthering Heights, it ain't easy. You don't know what you're talking about!. She and Tori are both hugely talented, kooky but different....
AINEMAIRENICHUILINN 4 years ago 4
They're very different. The music doesn't sound the exact same, and they are different women. Kate is very theatrical, I might say, and Tori' spiritual. But I haven't heard about Kate until today. And Tori for a few years now. I dunno, to each his/her own...
lillimeabh 4 years ago

whoa, maybe I went too far with that, I apologize to everyone.
haydenaurian 4 years ago
Don't be sorry I tottally agree with your comment and cityzenart has obviously no idea what he/she is talking about.
Tori Amos is probably one of the most charitable preformers out there, and the only reason she is always talking about RAINN and Rape and rebelion is because that is what WE people need to hear, lest we forget that it HAPPENS, and let wool be pulled over eyes.
darlingzooloo 4 years ago
thanks zooloo, I just didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings so I felt bad for my response to cityzenart's comment, he/she has a right to say or think what they want Tori Amos, but this was something I felt I had to point out and explain, but I also don't want my comment to be a bad representation of fans of Tori or Tori herself by it being misunderstood as arrogance or bullying. Thanks.
haydenaurian 4 years ago
I totally understand, I mean I respect both Tori and Miss Bush, and I don't see them fighting eachother, so why should we? XD
darlingzooloo 4 years ago
Oh, I don't see them fighting each other either, I've been A Tori fan since 1996 and i've only heard of Kate Bush 3 months ago, but I really like them both. I thought this video was kind of funny, not too offensive, like a friendly joking on the both of them and it made a nice point towards the end.
haydenaurian 4 years ago
I wasn't saying that she lacks compassion in a sense of selfishness... but that her artistry doesn't reflect it... And when your artistry is about being a victim for 15 years it's somewhat self absorbed or pidgeon-holed.
cityzenart 4 years ago
Dude, Tori Amos co-founded RAINN to help victims of abuse in all forms, she's even done a benifit concert for RAINN, and she's done more than she has to by listening to fan's stories of abuse and comforting them, and you have to realize that not everyone can be compassionate 24/7, some people have personal lives that can't always take a backseat to music, tours, or anything else. To ask Tori to do more than she already has would be selfish of all of us.

Sounds like a convenient tax write off to me.

Tori Amos is always about being a victim or rebelling. She lacks compassion and accountability that might give her some dimension. AWESOME puppet show BTW.
cityzenart 4 years ago
this is going to sound a little immature but, you're a complete idiot.
RasputnaViolist 3 years ago
such a compelling rebuttal.

There were adverts for it everywhere in England, as well as magazine and newspaper covers.
snavenai 4 years ago
Aww, you can't say the puppets are terrible. They do look a lot like them both and are well made... I like both singers and it made me laugh a few times. Kate's best of course :)

OMGGGGG that was HIALRIOUS!! thank you for an awsom LAUGH!!
IsraeliSinger 4 years ago
I'm a huge fan of both, but I have to say I find it REALLY annoying when Tori talks about how she was a pioneer and how there weren't any female piano singer-songwriter people out there when she made Little Earthquakes, which she says all the time. She's even said that there hadn't been any "since Carole King." She could at least acknowledge Kate Bush when she's making those kinds of statements.
BTW, the video kind of sucked. Sorry.
HelloMrZebra 4 years ago
I've never heard her make such grand statements. she often said that the record companies rejected cos the girl with a piano thing was over. Kate was never considered as a 'girl with a piano', even though she could play, and Tori was talking about US record companies, where Kate was not heard of. Tori has acknowledged Kate a number of time, in fact it COULD be argued that Kate has been more disrespectful to Tori than she has to her. However, I adore both.
jupitersbrother 4 years ago 6
Kate's only mentioned Tori twice when cornered by interviewers. One was a Rolling Stone article circa 1993. She said she'd heard one song and it was "nice." More recently 'Q' asked her who the best artists of the last 20 years were...and then interjected "Tori Amos?" Kate did not take the bait and made no comment.

Well the pupettry is terrible and teh dreadlock sucks. But the things tori said were really damn funny LMAO
And I say that as an obsessed Tori Fan.

that's funny...
christianleefrye 4 years ago
The vid was made to be tongue in cheek. No need to get arsey about comparisons which weren't actually made. Tori's more of a traditional songwriter, in the Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Bod Dylan vein. Kate Bush is in the experimental art-rock clan. Like Bjork, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead.
=)

Kate Bush sounds NOTHING like Joni Mitchell!! I don't know whereyou could make the comparison..They're COMPLETLEY differnt!!
suckmybuttons 4 years ago
i love them both.
rionwhen 4 years ago
You're right, I wasn't exactly saying that you were the one doing the comparing, but every time I hear the two women's names in the same sentence, there's always some comparison, so I am just kind of irked. One very distinct difference between them seems to be Kate is very literal with her vocal interpretations (like her dance moves) whereas Tori's vocal choices seem more abstract and for the sake of the music.
robobrow 5 years ago
And ya know, as long as we are making comparisons, Kate Bush sometimes had some "Joni Mitchell" moments in her songs... I guess she ripped her off :J
Anyway my point is, everyone has musical influences and tendencies... Kate Bush is good, and Tori Amos is also good, both were exposed to music at an early age. I hardly believe someone as talented as Tori "ripped" off anyone. I guess two women who use complex chord structures and time signatures can't co-exist in the business.
robobrow 5 years ago
Well, even in the video, Syrus concedes that the two "don't actually sound that much alike," and that the ones who they should be mad at are the lazy audiences and reviewers that pit their work against each other.
creaturetheatre 5 years ago
p.s. stop comparing Tori to Kate...
They're different... Jesus Christ...
It's usually Kate Bush fans hating on Tori... It's really kind of ugly to do this, just enjoy your Kate Bush albums and keep buying them.

Fab - so so so funny. And quite true. Except that in England we never really forgot Kate Bush.
jonnyboymach3 5 years ago
That was hilarious. I love them both, but some of those points hit a little too close to home. I just wish you had just made a reference to Kate's lack of output in comparison to Tori's prolific writing ability. "Why should I be jealous?" "Because I can put out 10 albums in the time it takes you to do one!" "And it shows, too." "They're good albums; I'd pit any of mine against any of yours." "I got David Gilmour to play on mine." "I got Adrian Belew to play with me." &c.
DustyChalk 5 years ago
Yeah I agree with Dusty. Funny, but to British audiences the dig about Kate's album sales isn't as funny since she sells very well in this country. Some more comparisons between the two would have been funnier.

Dominicano1197 5 years ago
Many do compare Tori to Kate Bush, but you can't deny that Tori is a master of the piano, and you can't deny that she has respectable talent.
So just because you don't like her doesn't mean she isn't truly talented.

Why is Kate Bush a cockney? Not that Kate Bush with a cockney accent isn't great *cough* there goes a tenner*
contick1234 5 years ago
Because Kate has a cockney twang to her accent anyway - not as obvious as that, but it's still there.
There are some obvious comparisons between Kate and Tori but the reality is they actually don't sound that alike. Tori clearly was heavily influenced by Kate's work but her sound isn't really the same. I'm a big Kate fan, but I appreciate Tori's work too even if I'm not that into her music. I also agree with whoever said Kate sells well in the UK - her albums have sold millions over here.
