At the time LIDCOMBE OVAL was a graveyard for PARRAMATTA.
In 1972 WESTS defeated the EELS 52-10......and from that year Parramatta lost every match v Wests at Lidcombe until 1984...which was the year that Wests only won 1 game !!!
Slightly underage pussy doing the cheerleading for the barnstorming Western Suburbs Magpies in 1982. Never mind - I'm certainly giving that the full benefit of the doubt.
I have stopped following blood sports since 18 yrs ago. But when I did follow rugby, I was a staunch Wests supporter. I didn't care about Wests Manly matches. The team I had it in for was Parramatta; because my sister (21 yrs my senior) and her daughter (1 yr my senior) both supported Parramatta. And so did most kids in my school. So Wests Parramatta matches were like war. And this one, which I clearly remember, was the most memorable one. Parramatta, eat Wests' dust.
Real footy. Real tackling. Real ball. Real crowds. We know there were real scrums. Almost tempted to say I miss The Moose. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. All these games should be found and broadcasted again. Dallas potting that field goal is one of the cheekiest moments in Rugby League History
Unfortunately they don't exist anymore. I did some research and only a handful old games from the 70's and early 80's still exist in TV channel and Aust Film archives. The TV stations used to tape over them after a year or 2 because storage was expensive.
So they only exist on dodgy old videos that were taped at the time by viewers. Remember that every house having a video recorder didn't really happen until the early/mid 80's.
The good old days - real scrums? sort of... 1982 was when the NSWRL started fiddling with the game (rules interpretation) for the benefit of sponsors and detriment of players. Now we have interchange for pansies, random penalties according to "flavour of the week" and small wrinkled balls, in more ways than one. It's no wonder the best players, who just love playing switch to Rugby. SBW does not count - he's brainless.
Great stuff! Let`s be fair to Wests. They had Terry Lamb, Dallas and Alan Neil and so on. Plus Parra had that Lidcombe Hoodoo. But the telecast is magic. They were still giving scrum scores back then. Blokes were kicking for goal with the old toebasher and still making it bend. Bloody front rowers kicking field goals! Viva la 80s!
And decent commentary to boot. The old "Sevens big league" Telecast had all the angles minus the bullshit packaging and Ray Warren's annoying commentary.
Yea spot on. I recall Neil being out injured for most of 1982. He struggled to get back into first grade again that year even though he was playing well. I think Lamb played half back and Greg Cox was five eight for most of the year ?
I thought Neil was Trevor Cogger at first! That field goal from Dallas was pure gold... brings back good memories of watching the magpies from the top of the toilet block at the northern end of Lidcombe oval.
Parramatta thought they were going to be in for a easy win that day. They always choked when playing Wests at Lidcombe. Thanks for posting the footage of Dallas kicking the field goal...Happy childhood memories brought back.
Thay should rebuild lidcombe oval for training games for wests magpies and for wests Tigers like redfurn oval

Wests had some gutsy + skillful players back then like Merlo,Leis,Cooper & Alan Niell not to mention the great Dallas Donnelly.
We all know how Manly stole our best players but dont forget Canterbury robbing us of Leis,Battese,Terry Lamb & later on Leabeater & Darren Britt.

Yeah if you put these old matches against the footy show the old matches would rate higher

Alan Neil would have had to be one of the most underated halfbacks in the late 70's early 80's.
