"--witz" is a very common name suffix--the last SOS victim was Moskowitz. David's natural father's name was Kleinman. Berkowitz is his adoptive name. He is a Jew of Hungarian descent
I think Berkowitz has always been the same charming, average man and that he has above average intelligence to con people. I think he is trying to do good but regardless of that, look inbetween the lines, he is still a killer and nothing will ever undo or make right what he had done and how he has hurt people. I'm sure he is forgiven but people will never forget and he should still burn in hell, it is what he deserves.
I don't hear anyone here praising David and his horrible crimes. I hear wonder and hope at his redemption. Watch this interview and then watch Ramirez or Gacy, you will see that all serial killers are not the same – some are not forever evil. Some can turn their life around. Of course, we have to be ultra-careful in releasing anyone who committed such horrible crimes. But that is a very different issue from whether or not a serial killer can have real remorse and be rehabilitated and forgiven.
It's amazing how some men who commit horrendous acts see the light and redeem themselves (David Berkowitz) versus those who stay mired in anger, violence, and evil (Richard Ramirez). awesome interview. A lot has been said about the so called son of sam killings but as lot of info was also kept from the public. There is a book by Maury Terry called Ultimate Evil that has a lot of facts about the case that were withheld or just not investigated properly. Seems to me he is clinging to a hope that he will get out - even if on an intellectual level he knows that won't happen. Also seems like his jovialness, smile, etc, is hiding a lot of pain. I don't know if he's 'cured' or not, as he tries to portray that he is. But he is very convincing.

A good interview. I don't think he's a Psychopath, just was suffering severe delusions at the time. It's good to see he's sorry. Yes these kind of things happen in life but is it better to understand why.
This interview was interesting and not entirely what I expected. It's often been said of those who commit crimes is that they seem perfectly normal, nice enough people that keep to themselves, I can definitely see that here.
I don't have any formal training in criminal behavior, psychology, etc. but what I see is a man who committed atrocious crimes many years ago, and the weight of years has brought a measure of remorse. Real remorse vs. lip service, I don't know offhand, but it seems real.

Although I believe he is sincere in his remorse for the crimes he is serving time for, I wish he was asked the question... Did you act alone in the crimes? Read Maury Terry's book, 'The Ultimate Evil' and you will find chilling evidence that he acted along with at least 3 others, all of which were members of the satanic cult called the Process, Charles Manson was also a member and actually met DB. It would seem that DB is not being entirely truthful with himself even today.
I had at one time believed he acted with others in these crimes, but the more I learn about this guy and what he did, I think he acted on his own. Perhaps the cult was his motivation, but I'm no longer convinced that he acted with others.

Thanks for posting these. Berkowitz is obviously intelligent, articulate and interesting. However, he is/always will be a dangerous psychopath and his christian conversion is his way of continuing to receive attention and to manipulate others. Also, seeking forgiveness from his victims' families is simply an outlet for reliving/relishing his crimes. I realize that DB seems very sincere but psychopaths do not "find God." It is not within their mental make up.
I'm inclined to agree, jksonny, about the essential nature of the psychopath. However, for whom is your description not true? Nobody seeks for God; nobody has the potential to "find God". God finds those who hate him and are wretched sinners - or so Christians (like myself) believe. And there is nothing from a psychological or theological perspective that forces us to believe that God through His grace cannot restrain those with ASPD and use them for His glory. God is greater than sin.
I understand and respect your perspective if those are your beliefs. But I've read too much about psychopaths to believe that they will ever be capable of anything other than violence and manipulation. And isn't it convenient that God apparently always comes to these people AFTER they're caught? Where was God when these animals were out committing their crimes? That's fairly easy to respond to on both levels, IMO, jksonny. The psychopath is consumed with his/her grandiosity and isn't going to turn to God or the police while he's getting away with his or her actions, psychologically. Further, Jesus said, "I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Usually sinners first need to be convinced that they are sinners before they repent: sometimes, jail will do that.

One trait that virtually all sociopaths share is a tremendous ego. Almost all of them have a history of taunting and toying with the people and the society they have victimized. If they are imprisoned for any length of time, then a certain metamorphosis accurs without fail in every case I've read about and been associated with. As a scientist, it is not my job to judge, but it is my job to make a diagnosis based on rigorously tested medical theory. I don't hear anyone here praising David and his horrible crimes. I hear wonder and hope at his redemption. Watch this interview and then watch Ramirez or Gacy, you will see that all serial killers are not the same – some are not forever evil. Some can turn their life around. Of course, we have to be ultra-careful in releasing anyone who committed such horrible crimes. But that is a very different issue from whether or not a serial killer can have real remorse and be rehabilitated and forgiven.

awesome interview. A lot has been said about the so called son of sam killings but as lot of info was also kept from the public. There is a book by Maury Terry called Ultimate Evil that has a lot of facts about the case that were withheld or just not investigated properly. Well worth a read and will make you think twice in regards to David being the only person involved in the killings.

This interview was interesting and not entirely what I expected. It's often been said of those who commit crimes is that they seem perfectly normal, nice enough people that keep to themselves, I can definitely see that here.
I don't have any formal training in criminal behavior, psychology, etc. but what I see is a man who committed atrocious crimes many years ago, and the weight of years has brought a measure of remorse. Real remorse vs. lip service, I don't know offhand, but it seems real.

Read Maury Terry's book, 'The Ultimate Evil' and you will find chilling evidence that he acted along with at least 3 others, all of which were members of the satanic cult called the Process, Charles Manson was also a member and actually met DB. Thanks for posting these. Berkowitz is obviously intelligent, articulate and interesting. However, he is/always will be a dangerous psychopath and his christian conversion is his way of continuing to receive attention and to manipulate others. Also, seeking forgiveness from his victims' families is simply an outlet for reliving/relishing his crimes. I realize that DB seems very sincere but psychopaths do not "find God." It is not within their mental make up.

God finds those who hate him and are wretched sinners - or so Christians (like myself) believe. That's fairly easy to respond to on both levels, IMO, jksonny. The psychopath is consumed with his/her grandiosity and isn't going to turn to God or the police while he's getting away with his or her actions, psychologically. Further, Jesus said, "I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Usually sinners first need to be convinced that they are sinners before they repent: sometimes, jail will do that.
I do not deny the reality of false conversion or hypocrisy, though.

One trait that virtually all sociopaths share is a tremendous ego. Almost all of them have a history of taunting and toying with the people and the society they have victimized. If they are imprisoned for any length of time, then a certain metamorphosis accurs without fail in every case I've read about and been associated with. this conception can not be understood if youre not philosophically apt. it comes from the philosophical school that says everything in the universe is tightly connected and has a role to play in the drama of existence. the universe in itself is neither evil or good, and there are no evil or good acts in themselves, acts are only given value by individuals and each individual is different, and each idea carries illusion intrinsically. therefore society must be modeled after natural basic laws

Many times a sociopath will go to great lengths to show you how crazy they are by engaging in outrageous activities or making outlandish comments. This is a complete act of course, and they invariably calm themselves after a time and try another approach (typically the benign personality traits that I spoke of earlier). I like to refer to this state as the "helpful neighbour routine"; a kind of non-threatening 'regular guy' who just wants to hang out and shoot the breeze.

This is what is known about sociopaths: They are compulsive and remorseless liars. If they commit murder on multiple occasions and are imprisoned as a result, they typically exhibit benign personality traits while incarcerated (in other words, a Jekyll and Hyde complex). They are incapable of true empathy. They are disingenuously charming. They are an unrelenting threat to public safety if they engage in criminal activity. They are sometimes fearless and, more often than not, willful.

Very true, not all sociopaths are killers. Sadly there is no known cure for sociopathic behavior, but there have been therapies that have been proven effective (I.e. empathy excercises). I fear this exchange will inevitably end on the age old nature nurture debate. The conclusion: A bit of both. I must confess, I'm not exactly clear as to the point you are making. It should be okay for psychopaths to kill? The general public deserves no protection from psychopathic killers?

my point is that the sickness belongs to the way society is conceptualized in the western world. we must adopt a budhist perspective to life. the idea of crime and punishment will NEVER solve any criminal issue. what im suggesting is that sociopathy is at least 70% nurture and not nature, and nurture is provided by the society we live in. the prison system creates more evil than any criminal could on his own.

A friend of mine was raped while serving a one year sentence for burglary. But do you believe that the general public deserves no protection from psychotic killers? An answer to this question is crucial if I am to completely understand your viewpoint. If not, are David's victims merely inconsequential?

Fascinating! A true sociopath in sheeps clothing. He never once used the term "my" crimes. He always refers to them as "the" crimes. In describing himself, he simply recites all the classic characteristics of a run of the mill sociopath. This man has no remorse. His activities are only for the sake of being active. He shows no emotion, and he never once said why he thought his murders were wrong. He only lists the text book reasons why murder is wrong. It's great he's alive for study.

Yes, I apologize. But he later refers to his actions as "the" crimes. He even talks about the crime in his neighborhood diconnectedly as though he is just an observer. Sociopaths typically try to immitate "normal" people when they are caught. His "remorse" is simply obligatory, because that is what a "normal" person would do. In reality he feels no remorse. He is incapable of feeling much of anything in fact. He never shows emotion when talking about his victims or his family.

As a scientist, it is not my job to judge, but it is my job to make a diagnosis based on rigorously tested medical theory. Since spiritual intervention can't be scientifically tested, it is a negative argument in the arena of science, and therefore belongs to a catagory all its own. There is nothing to forgive. You are obviously a benevolent and charitable person full of trust and forgiveness, and this is a good thing. Unfortunately, I've seen many people like you taken advantage of by sociopaths. You bring up a good point. I can't know a persons heart! I wish that I could. What I try to do is make educated decisions based on what I know and what is known. Sometimes my job entails protecting the public from potentially dangerous people, and I must be shrewd.

Fantastic interview Daniel. He wasn't what I expected at all. I thought he was for the birds. Instead he was intelligent and articulate. He definitely seems like great counsellor material. He certainly convinced me. Steps should be taken for him to offer his apologies to victims relatives. I don't think he said if he would like to get out or not? It would be good to see him completely rehabiltated back to the community although I realise people may have problems with that. Well done David.

Great councelor material indeed! It's so wonderful that he is still alive for study. This video is very revealing about how a sociopath interacts, or doesn't interact, with the rest of the world. He coldly analyzes things as if he were a non-participant. He never speaks with warmth or "from the heart". He never once brings up his deep personal feelings. He still manages to hide and conceal himself with a veneer of candor. Recounting the death of his mother seemed effortless!!

One suggestion: Name calling isn't necessary to get one's point accross. It is possible to express one's viewpoint without casting personal and vulgar aspersion.
