I have a friend with exactly 5 teeth and weird plasticy-look-like things on hes gums, yet it doesn't bother when smiling, it just lightens up hes personality.
I'm not really impressed. I'm not much of a smiler myself. I know that smiling is healthy, but if I can't smile then I just can't, plain and simple. I'm not going to force it.
While i don't want to talk down on his efforts, fake-positivity, and that includes a fake-friendly (smiling) persona is not what leads to emotional health. Now if you're a naturally happy person, maybe a subtle increase in smiling might(!) help, but that's not a state that average population can work with as a starting point.
Emotional integration, feeling one's feelings, not being caught up in muscular tensions & thoughts toward outward appearance are a more realistic approach.
@HiAdrian Truth!!! If you're not smiling naturally, spontaneously and easily, you most likely have some issues that need to be dealt with IMO. Forcing superficial happiness is not a real solution.
Who would want to live long on this shitty planet? There are no hopes of jobs, everything is too damn expensive, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, being corrupt and immoral is the only way to put food in your stomach. Stop the world please i want to get off.
So things that make people unhappy make them live shorter lives? Is the smile/ frown the cause or the outward symptom of other, more important factors?
almost for any person on this planet you can find atleast 3 photos one with them smiling wide, slightly smiling, or not smiling ( just go on facebook). For instance i could find a photo or obama not smiling; it doesn't mean that he wasn't succesful in life
@JGtheKid14 yes, this is a prezi, check it here: see the original presentation here: prezi.com/u8i1a__brbc6/the-untapped-powers-of-the-smile-ron-gutman-ted-talk/
Yeah, I live by this, and it works powerfully! I have finally got to the point where I can smile at anyone, almost any time and change their mood with a real, genuinely powerful smile that nothing can overcome!
Whenever I feel bad or stressed, etc. I make myself go for a walk for a long time and force myself to breath deep and I look up a lot to see the big picture and force myself to smile while I stare at the stars late at night! This has changed my life!
I like how towards the very end theres that one dude in the right bottom not clapping and crossing his arms as if giving off an atittude... JUST CLAP AND FREAKING SMILE! lol
Is it the "smile" that is creating longevity? Or is it the healthy person who feels great because they take care of themselves that is causing them to not only smile but also to live longer? In other words, I don't think I could eat bacon every morning, lunch, and dinner for the next 50 years and smoke 2 packs a day, put on a fake smile all day long and live longer because of it.
@CheddarBob39 Not a valid comparison. Would be like saying; Moist and care is great for your skin. But since when I set myself on fire my skin will burn and peel off. Therefore I disprove the fact that moist and care is good for my skin.
Its simple math really. If something benefits to a result with +10 . You do not cancel out its value with something hurting it with -50. The something will still benefit with +10 no matter what
No, because you see when you feel like crap(are depressed) and somebody tells you, "just smile," it would have to be "forced." And believe you me, I am sure that forced fake smile won't make the person live longer/feel better which is my point.
I think it is better to say, people who feel better live longer. And that is probably due to being healthy(that's why they feel better.) And when you feel good, you tend to smile more often(naturally.) The smiling is the effect not the cause of feeling good. And feeling good is the cause of smiling and also what determines your longevity.
You and this guy may have a valid point though. BUT, from my experience in life thus far, I have had times where I had to force smiles(because I wasn't happy,) and I have had times where I was naturally smiling(truly happy.) I guess being able to force a smile and look happy all the time is a great technique to look confident. lol. Although I am sure it is the confidence that the person already has that is creating the smiling, not the smiling creating confidence.
@CheddarBob39 You are absolutely spot on. Since all the things you mentioned .. Large intakes of sugar, fats and other harmful things will make you depressed / feel bad, you will naturally smile less.
I guess I took the extreme example because, overweight unhealthy people smoking 40 cigs a day, maybe even dying from aids, will still smile from time to time. I was merely pointing out that it will of course not help them in the "long" run which I can tell now, that you are clearly aware off :D
@CheddarBob39 I know you are not being serious, but I cant help but wanting to address this anyway.
Smiling with Malicious intent is a form of psychosis. Why we come to accept this as something real is because of its often use in entertainment industry. Things like cartoons often drawing from the weird and unrealistic to make us laugh will give you the impression that it happens in real life as well. Why? @meekhra "yes." both can cause the other to occur and thus reinforce that same held positive action whether it were initiated as a smile or as a positive thought. Much like a yawn is contagious, so is a smile. Test it out and see how you feel and what response you get.

@chillmeester It seems the point here is that it is better to be optimistic than pessimistic if you are referring to individual health. People who are excessively negative or the like are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular and stress related illness. The problem is the focus on the smile - it is like saying that pooping more is a way to fight starvation because people who poop a lot generally aren't starving. Positive thinking is the message that should be focused on. If one wants to be happy they should set goals, get shit done. Nothing makes one happier than being useful to their species in some capacity - it is a built in, biological thing.
@Cajaquarius Yep. the first intelligent response to my feedback on this video. thank you. it almost seemed that a slavish zombie mind believing everything at face value without deeper contemplation and turning things around had become the norm. i might be very positive in my mind about certain things and not be smiling . or i might be depressed and smiling like there's no tomorrow. as long as i am not running away from those inner states it's ok.
@chillmeester Well, when you think about it, smiles suggest greater satisfaction and life and perhaps show a reduction in stress. That may in fact, contribute to a person's well-being, long life and success. True, you may have very positive thoughts in your mind, but it is also likely that you'd smile specially if that positive thought has been exacted. Perhaps the smile he's referring to is having the positive outlook emanate outwardly as smiles -- not merely flexing cheek muscles :)
@rneekhra The thing is it is a chicken and egg scenario - is smiling leading to positive thinking or is positive thinking a precursor to smiling in the way that sexual arousal would cause erection? I tend to think the latter on this.
@Cajaquarius I can't cite it, but I have seen research that says that simply faking a smile can improve your mood. So it's not a Chicken OR egg situation it is a chicken AND egg situation. Either can help.
who said it's hurting? i like smiling. im just saying this guy's logic is ridiculous. smile more = longer life expectancy. Usually i learn something from TED talks. This was just nonsense.
@chefawkes Dude, I'm sorry you can't listen to reason. That's your fucking bad. It stands to reason, actually, that if you spent your lifetime frowning, you'd probably end up dying pretty quickly. The old people that I've gotten to know in my life have been pretty fucking cheery, actually. And that's a fact. Obviously, other factors come in to play, but that's ALWAYS the case, and I'll still go with my informed intuition over being a jerk, anyday. Cheers.
ya its good sense. smile more often! you'll live longer! It's something a mother would tell her child. This is TED talks, it's supposed to be bright ideas supported with facts and science. Not mushy gushy mothers intuition.
@chefawkes Oh, you're one of those rigorous science-types, right? Only believe in anything that can be proven, and hence throw reason to the wind. TED isn't only about factual stuff, friend. It contains a lot more than that, thank the fucking lord. Because if everyone just spoke when they had a fact to divulge, we'd live in a fucking boring world and a backwards one as well.
I believe in many things that haven't been proven. you assume too much. But i'm not gonna believe just anything someone says. there's gotta be reasoning behind it. this guy doesn't have any.
@chefawkes Correction: "you don't want to see any (reason) behind it." It makes you feel better, because a world where people say sensible things based on intuition and reason gives you anxieties.
@aidilusion either you have a lot of time and you know how to use after effects or, there is prezi dot com, which is possibly where he did it from. (haven't actually used it but I've seen some of the stuff and it's impressive.)
Well! Now I can't stop smiling!

@Cajaquarius I think since has proved it if you change your facial expression your mood will change. Regards

@rneekhra The thing is it is a chicken and egg scenario - is smiling leading to positive thinking or is positive thinking a precursor to smiling in the way that sexual arousal would cause erection? I tend to think the latter on this.
Cajaquarius 3 months ago
@Cajaquarius I can't cite it, but I have seen research that says that simply faking a smile can improve your mood. So it's not a Chicken OR egg situation it is a chicken AND egg situation. Either can help.

One of the worst talks. Attributing causality betweens life expectancy and smiles? ridiculous.

@chefawkes Re-fucking-lax, dude. It can't hurt to smile, and god knows our society can use it.

"it can't hurt to smile"
who said it's hurting? i like smiling. im just saying this guy's logic is ridiculous. smile more = longer life expectancy. Usually i learn something from TED talks. This was just nonsense.
chefawkes 6 months ago 2
@chefawkes Dude, I'm sorry you can't listen to reason. That's your fucking bad. It stands to reason, actually, that if you spent your lifetime frowning, you'd probably end up dying pretty quickly. The old people that I've gotten to know in my life have been pretty fucking cheery, actually. And that's a fact. Obviously, other factors come in to play, but that's ALWAYS the case, and I'll still go with my informed intuition over being a jerk, anyday. Cheers.
missingt00th 6 months ago
@missingt00th
im a jerk cuz i disagree with his logic? wow how reasonable of you.. pff
chefawkes 6 months ago
@chefawkes It's not 'his logic', it's reason and good sense, pure and simple. But believe what you want to believe. I'm sure you're good at that.
missingt00th 6 months ago
@missingt00th
ya its good sense. smile more often! you'll live longer! It's something a mother would tell her child. This is TED talks, it's supposed to be bright ideas supported with facts and science. Not mushy gushy mothers intuition.
chefawkes 6 months ago
@chefawkes Oh, you're one of those rigorous science-types, right? Only believe in anything that can be proven, and hence throw reason to the wind. TED isn't only about factual stuff, friend. It contains a lot more than that, thank the fucking lord. Because if everyone just spoke when they had a fact to divulge, we'd live in a fucking boring world and a backwards one as well.
missingt00th 6 months ago
@missingt00th
I believe in many things that haven't been proven. you assume too much. But i'm not gonna believe just anything someone says. there's gotta be reasoning behind it. this guy doesn't have any.
chefawkes 6 months ago
@chefawkes Correction: "you don't want to see any (reason) behind it." It makes you feel better, because a world where people say sensible things based on intuition and reason gives you anxieties.

Anyone knows how to create presentation slides like that????
aidilusion 7 months ago
@aidilusion either you have a lot of time and you know how to use after effects or, there is prezi dot com, which is possibly where he did it from. (haven't actually used it but I've seen some of the stuff and it's impressive.)
