  • Thanks for the info! Can your please post where u purchase your shea butter? :)

  • Thank you for posted this video because yesterday i saw the white shea butter. I thought Shea butter was yellow and not white. I didn't buy it but I should had because it is the Really Shea butter.

  • That's not true. Yellow Shea Butter is shea butter. Do your research people and don't just accept whatever someone says. :(

  • U r the best

  • hamberg 247 we have enough african dicks...!

  • so how do you know where to get them from? I just bought some and it says shea and its yellow.... should I just get them from african stores only to get the real deal?

  • she could get some american dick. But that weave has to go

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU this vid has been very very helpful and I recently purchased a glass jar of yellow African butter call shea butter from Ghana and when I mixed my concoction of coconut oil, castor oil with this grainy yellow African butter I dont know if I mixed it well enough or what the consistance was smooth to slightly grainy but not pudding like, like I wanted it since I spent money on this product I will cont. to use it but I now know the diff. and will purchase only ivory s. b. TXS.

  • where can I buy REALLLL shea from?

  • @BoneAppetite73 u can email me so that i can get u some..am in ghana and my email is aminushak@yahoo.com...my number is oo233243889137 or u can cotact imani in usa +1 314.643.6067

  • I understand all that you have to say. I have seen a number of your videos. One question. I recently bought a tub of butter that is yellow, a bit hard to get into. It says MADE IN AFRICA on it and lists it as Shea Butter. My question for you is, 1) Is this Shea butter with yellow coloring added or Kpangnan Butter aka African Butter? It is so hard to get into and when you dig into the tub and apply on your skin, a bit falls of in chunks on the ground. 2) Doesn't have company name on it.

  • @kopenhav Thx! The Pentadesma butyracea (PB) tree which produces Kpangnan butter or African butter that is naturally yellow is a completely different species of tree from the Shea tree or Vitellaria paradoxa (VB). VB trees grow in the open savanna while PB trees grow in the dense gallery forests along the rivers and streams in Central Togo. When buying butter, ask is this shea butter with Borututu herb added or is this the natural color of the butter. THXS you answered my question !!!

  • @scienceDDG I found the same answer.... the source I read said to ask also the grade of the butter you are buying to determine if it because shea butter has a yellow tint could infact be grade B and not purely unrefined grade A

  • @scienceDDG

Yes, thanks for your comment! I already knew where both the species grow, but what I'd like answered in case you don't know, and I'm opening up the topic/question for others as well -- the yellow butter that I have say's MADE IN AFRICA on it without a company or brand name, which is fine as long as someone with some more knowledge could guess whether it is Kpangnan/African Butter, Borututu herbed shea or some other artificial yellow dyed shea perhaps. I bought it in Milwaukee,WI.

  • Comment removed

  • @scienceDDG This yellow stuff in clear container with Made in Africa on it is harder than shea butter. Shea butter is ivory and easy to get into and soft and very creamy with an unmistakable smell. I am so perplexed what it is that I have. Do I have Kpangnan or Borututu herbed shea or artificial colored shea? It is fun trying to figure this out! :)

  • Thank you for clearing that up. I just sent my boufriens to the store to go buy me some Shea butter. And he calls me saying there's two. A yellow one and an off white type off color(his words) soni just told him to buy both

  • I have to take issue with you when you say the yellow Shea butter is not real. That is misinformation because I have witnessed in Ghana the processing of Shea butter. What makes the Shea butter yellow is the addition of a dried herb from the Borututu tree which is added to the shea nuts as they are ground. I don't know how it is processed in East Africa but well processed Shea Butter does not have a smoke smell. Please, could you give the name of the nut from which African butter is made. Thxs

  • @scienceDDG She does mention about 4:24 that some people sell shea butter that has been dyed a bright yello color. So you have actually validated her statement thank you!

  • @curldiva I heard that statement but my point is that the Duchess Gabrielle claimed shea butter is not "real" shea butter due to the color. One should be cautious when stating something is not real only due to the fact that an additional product, in this case a natural herb, has been added to it. I'm still curious as to the name of the seed used to make "African Butter". Hopefully, the Duchess will oblige or maybe you or anyone else can. Thanks in advance. :)

  • Thank you. This is the exact video I needed. Also, i.like the song at the end :)

  • Thank you this was really helpful.

  • where did you get your ivory shea butter?

  • i wonder where can we actually find the "true" Shea butter than?..Isn't that misleading what they're selling off as "Shea butter"?....you're pretty by the way and thank you for the information:)~

  • my friend from Ghana says that in Ghana, the shea nuts create yellow and ivory shea butter, depending on whether or not they crush some of the tree bark in the mixture, which makes it smokey smelling and yellow. He said that over in Nigeria, their shea nut only makes the ivory shea butter and like you said, a totally different tree makes the African Butter. So, what you're saying is correct, but there are two colors of Shea butter when the nut comes from Ghana.

  • naturally thinking.com is good website to purchase shea butter. uk based but with overseas shipping

  • I have the yellow

  • Hi, what vendor do you recommend to purchase either butter?

  • Thanks for the vid. I have been using shea butter from Coastal Scents for years. Always it has been ivory in color. Then saw the yellow "shea" butter in some other videos and found yours. I actually went to an african hair/braiding salon last year, trying to find shea butter locally and the owner told me "Cocoa butter is the same thing as shea butter.". It was the cocoa butter stick in a tube that you use on your feet!!! What people wont do to make a buck.

  • Thank you-very informative!

  • VERY informative. Thank you so much and your beautiful accent brings me back home! I miss Ghana! <3

  • Wow! Thank you, so much

  • hi I have cocnut oil tell me please how to use it on hair and face? thank's

  • This is the vendor that I purchased my wht Shea Butter from. I don't live in Memphis, so I've never been to this location, but the vendor was at an event in another state. So maybe you can get it shipped.

    Bamas Africa

    4444 S 3rd St

    Memphis, TN

    (901) 270-3940

  • Ironically, I bought some (white)Shea butter this past Saturday. I noticed the two different colors of the butter and I asked the vendor about the difference. He didn't give me a complete answer, but he did say the white Shea butter was better, so I purchased the white and I love it! I noticed the difference in the softness of my skin immediatly!

Thanks for you post and explaining the difference in the two butters :)

  • Your accent is beautiful, it reminds me of my mothers.

  • Thank you for revealing this information. I did not know this, and I've been buying Shea Butter for over 10 years. Thanks for the info sis.

    Peace

    True Wise

  • Where can you get the white Shea butter from?

  • I was asking the woman who was selliing the shea butter where I bought mine at what the difference was, and she didn't know. Thank you for clearing things up! (:

  • Afseller, and all merchants, would do well to just tell the truth, or do the research if you really aren't aware that the yellow butter IS NOT shea butter. The yellow butter that we get in korean and african beauty supply stores is actually Kpangna Butter, equally, if not more beneficial to skin/hair. Honest sites sell both shea and kpangna separately for same price or a little more for the Kpangya. Shea Nut tree is grown in desert climate, and Kpangya in the rainforests/riverbanks. Google it.

  • Thank you so much for clearing that up. I have been using the Yellow African Butter, which I thought was authentic shea butter. But like you said, I really love how it helps my hair grow and its healing properties. I need to find somewhere to get the ivory shea butter =).

  • this lady dont know anything about shea butter she is confused?

  • i love her accent

  • I just bought African Shea butter. Its yellow in color and it has a funky smell that I can't stand. Is the smell normal? The smell is almost like the smell when a lipstick goes bad. Is there any way to mask the smell by adding other oils? THanks

  • @mardel3 Yep...that's the smell. Lol, it's not THAT bad, but I guess I'm just used to it.

  • yay i have white lol

  • @kamela92 haha!

  • Thank you so much for this information. I was wondering why about the different colors. I now know to purchase both, I been using african butter all this time. I really makes you angry, why couldn't they just tell the truth about the product? Don't get me wrong it's a great butter. Thanks again for your time and effort. It is greatly appreciated

  • i believe you info is a little off

  • the yellow-well whatever it's called it's AMAZING. the white one doesnt seem to work as well. Unlike what u say, my white is less creamy and yellow is creamy and grainy. the yellow is like a miracle. the white one is not. it's the opposite of your experience, idk why.

  • Informative. Thats one of my favorite songs at the end.

  • Fantastic I have been telling my North American friends that the so called yellow shea is NOT, in Nigeria we call it a different name not even close to shea and the areas I get the yellow from is completely different from where I get the shea from :) fantastic good job

  • does it work on stretch marks?

  • so you can put shea butter on your face right?

  • This website sells real unrefined raw shea butter and african black soap etsy.com/shop/NaturalCos

  • Yes, I will also use both. Thank you for letting us know the facts. :)

  • Wow!! what a confussing set of information that has been posted on-line, Thank you for that info ;-)

  • Hi, thank you for the information in distinguishing between the two colors. I have the African Yellow Shea Butter and would like to try tthe off white one. Where can I purchase this? Is there a website you can refer me to? Thank you

  • @njnaturalook Amazon.com

  • @njnaturalook SheaButterHut's site sells only the pure unrefined Shea Butter.

  • Hi. Great videos!!! I have a question.. Is the yellow "shea" actually kpangnan butter???? thanks ..

  • sigh. there is shea butter from East and West Africa. All that you are holding is West African shea butter. The difference between the white and yellow is that a bit of palm oil has been added to the yellow one. That is the reason why the people selling both kinds in harlem are WEST AFRICAN. sigh. everyone wants to be an internet guru. I have never used east african shea butter but I hear it is nice as well.

  • thank you very helpful ^_^

  • WOW! Thanks alot!

  • where do u get your butters from?

  • @MzAnonymous30 Some good places to get unrefined shea butter from are

    alaffia . com

    shop . agbangakarite . com

    sheabutterweb . com

    butters-n-bars . com

Each of these has high quality unrefined off-white to beige shea butters. My personal favorite is Alaffia/Agbanga Karite, as they are well know, fair trade, high quality, and reputable. With Alaffia you buy a small, 2 oz jar for almost $10 but, with their coop, Agbanga Karite, you can order in bulk and get 14 oz for $12.

  • Though nothing is added during this process, which is why it

is still 100% shea butter, by removing the natural color and odor of the butter, some of shea butter's reported

    healing potential is lost.

  • Q: the difference between refined and unrefined shea butter?

A: Shea butter, in its natural state, varies in color from a beige to off-white, to a mild yellow, to a bright

yellow, and has a slight nutty/smoky odor to it. When shea butter has been refined, the color and odor is

removed, making it white in color, and odorless.

  • *extracted

  • the color of the shea butter doesnt matter. there is no difference between the butters they are the same. what makes the color diff. is the way that it is exacted and how long it it boiled. the white shea butter is boiled longer than the yellow shea butter

  • (screams)...NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • u are kenyan aren't you?..Very articulate kudos ;)

  • I am glad I saw this video because I am going to this fair tomorrow that sells natural products. I will look out for the white shea butter.

  • Wear can I get the White Shea Butter??

  • @queeny107 eBay ^.^

  • @jollybaby18 - Thanks!!

  • @queeny107 Your Welcome :)

    Did you buy some?

  • @jollybaby18 - not yet but I will do..

  • Where can i get the shea butter you have?

  • Yum-my...... : p

  • Hi Gabrielle, I think another thing that is important to add is to make sure that your shea butter is fair trade. Fair trade shea butter ensures that the women who process the shea are being fairly compensated and not exploited. I think this is also a good way to ensure that you are getting a good quality shea butter because if the company is treating the workers right, they are probably more honest about their practices and what they are producing.

  • Comment removed

  • @NovaStarr Do you know how we can check that?

  • @818poochie I don't know how to check it on all brands but, I know my preferred brand, Alaffia advertises it on their website. I have been looking at a popular brand, Madina, however, and can't find information anywhere on their site. Usually you can find out if a company is fair trade because it will be labeled on the package, listed in the promotions, or on their website.

  • @NovaStarr fair trade is a scam

  • @Writerchic1 How so. From what I've read and researched, fair trade and cooperatives are the few things that keep the women producers from being exploited for the work and products. I believe very strongly in fair trade standards (in treating the workers fairly and justly compensating them), so if you are going to challenge it, please back it up with some reasoning and evidence.

  • Hi Gabrielle, Thanks for teaching us the different's on the Shea Butter

is there 3 kinds. because i been buying white Shea better . You only talk about bright yellow and ivery Shea butter. is there a white Shea butter as well? And do you sell them? Thanks

  • @bryceaw White shea butter is refined shea butter that has been processed and much of the beneficial properties have been removed. you want to make sure that your shea butter in unrefined and it will look like the ivory butter that Gabrielle showed in her video.

  • where do you get your shea butter from....ive been looking for unrefined shea butter and i know the yellow butter is not shea but some people on the internet try to pass it off as shea butter.

  • Thank you! Finally! And very well explained. That African butter doesn't always translate well on hair especially. You can get real Shea butter refined at whole foods or at herbariedotcom

  • the yellow shea butter is actually what I hear is a grade A form of shea butter but they are both butters

  • @NIJEECAPRICORN20

Shea butter is never a deep yellow color.

    See agbangakarite(dot)com(slash)info_goldenshea

  • @wallydanger I know its more like a grayish yellow but if its deep then its mixed with something

  • by the way if it is grainy what does this mean?

  • i wish i saw this video before!! I had an aunt give me shea butter which resembled the ivory creamy butter that u have, it had slight grey-ish undertones and i loved it, i went to a natural foods store and saw raw-unrefined shea butter that is bright yellow, it is hard a smelled different however i thought the one i had before was refined and figured this would be better but i dont like it, it doesnt leave my hair feeling silky only oily :( thanks for clearing up my confusion!! i was fooled

  • Comment removed

  • I bought "Yellow shea butter" last year and it turned white in a matter of months so Ive def been scammed... where can I get authentic shea /african butter?

  • wow! i love black dark skin women!!! light ones too!!! but damn that dark skin is sexy..

  • @tgriffplayer Lol

  • Hey does the African butter helps with acne and dry skins ??

  • Raw or unrefined- extracted using water. The color ranges from like cream (similar to whipped butter) to grayish yellow. This is the original form of Shea Butter. Refined- is more highly processed. Has many of its natural components still intact. Highly refined or processed- solvents are used to increase the yield (hexane is an example). The color is pure white. I have also read that the color will vary based on the method used to get the butter. What do you think about refined buttr?

  • hi, would you tell me where i would be able to purchase these products,,,thank you

  • Wow you are so beautiful! And thanks for this video.

  • I feel cheated now. I thought I was buying shea butter, but it was really african butter. Thanks for the clarification =)

  • @IamWhatIam081 right??! I was sitting over here thinking "I've been bamboozled!!" lol

  • yellow shea butter is UNrefined...meaning NOT processed and makes it healthier. white is processed. :)

  • @kye1609 That isn't correct. There can be a colour difference between the two (though there doesn't have to be), but unrefined shea butter is, not white, but a pale cream. Yellow-y tones, but not yellow.

  • @kye1609

sorry, you are wrong. unrefined shea butter is an ivory color.

    See agbangakarite(dot)com(slash)info_goldenshea

  • Thank you u cleared that up for me

  • Wow u r really pretty ^_^ go kenyans (spoken frm a Caribbean)

  • omgi feel betrayed now

  • where did you get your shea butter and african butter from?? i would love to order them

  • Where can I buy both butter ?

  • What sources can you provide that help confirm that "shea butter" and "african butter" are def. two different butters? Searching for this info without a lead on sources is tricky; every source thus far is saying they are the same. Please provide a link or source that helps clear this confusion. (I have seen your videos :) )

  • Both butters are full of antioxidants.

  • Gabrielle, that was great. I am in Ghana and I have seen a lot of African-American ladies explain their use of the shea butter; they have done well in explaining the use, but it is nice to see an African explaining the difference between the yellow and the cream color. I am working on getting some to Texas, because I find that a lot of people are looking for the raw shea butter. Thank you for the information. kofi105@yahoo.com

  • Great video!

  • Duchess thank you so much, for explaining.

  • I feel extra cheated because I bought what I though was Shea butter and have been using it for a while. Do you know where I can get it online? Nishi california and both are not easy to come by, infact I had to order mine on Amazon. It would be nice to figure out whether there are some genuine online vendors for raw Shea butter.

  • Does the African Butter have the same beneficial qualities as Shea Butter? (e.g. sebum resemblance, anti-oxidants etc)

And do you know the PH value of Shea Butter and African Soap? Thanks!

  • GREAT INFO! I'm just learning about Unrefined Shea Butter and wasn't sure what to look for but this vid answered a lot of my questions. I'd also like to purchase. What is your website info? And Ty for sharing

  • Hello I live in NYC and I was wondering where I can get the off white ( real) African Shea Butter from.

  • @misylves100 you can buy it from my website. i sell real unrefined shea butter along with some other natural butters and oils. check out my channel and my personal channel under the youtube name blesbey =)

  • @misylves100 you can get your shea butter along 125th st in Harlem. i purchased the raw (off white) shea butter today at 5 East 125th street.. while at the store, i asked about the difference between the white & yellow shea butter i was told that they are the same except that coloring has been added to the yellow one. people have different views on it but i believe the only difference is in the color not the product itself.

  • where do you buy your shea butter and or african butter

  • Can you make a list of places one can buy ''Real Unrefined Shea Butter'' not the similar butter?

  • where do you buy your shae butter from?

  • Thank you very much. What is your source of information? I just want to be able to verify. :)

  • Thank you Duchess for helping me to better understand the difference between the ivory and yellow Shea Butters.

  • Hi, I orderedwhat was said to be "REAL UNREFINED RAW SHEA BUTTER FROM GHANA" and it is indeed yellow in color. I watched a video here on Youtube that states the yellow can come from the use of the roots/bark of a specific tree being added.

I've heard you say that Shea butter has a distinct smokey smell. The butter I purchased definitely has a smokey smell.

My question is, does the African butter also have this distinct smell? or is this a good way to tell the two apart?

  • I bought some afrikan butter that was sold as "yellow shea butter." he siad is regular shea butter they just add palm oil -n is good for the skin... is that right?thanks

    peace n blessings

  • Greetings sister

Glad i came across your video. What r the healing properties of afrikan butter?...trying to see which is best... I know it maybe hard to tell...but if i where to know the healing properties of shea n afrikan buttter - i kan figure out for self.would it be better to get shea butter stray from the nut ?there people that sell it out here and they take it stray from the nut n place it in the container -then i buy it :) so, that is not process right -when it comes stray from the nut?

  • where do you purchase your butters from? It is so hard to find product that has not been altered!

  • @IMaHARDhabit2break you can buy it from my website. i sell real unrefined shea butter along with some other natural butters and oils. check out my channel and my personal channel under the youtube name blesbey =)

  • Lovely and Informative video... Am proud of you my dear home girl.. I live in Sweden and recently bought Akamuti shea butter.... its off white in color.. nimelearn vitu mob sana kwa channel yako.. keep it up!

  • Thank you so much, you cleared up my confusion

  • Very much helpful

  • Thank you for the info.

  • oops anti-aging I mean.

  • Thank you for explaining. I dont know where to find the white one but at least I know now. I'm hoping that African butter will help with my skin discolorations and aging.

  • thanks for the clarity

  • thanks for posting this video. i just bought the yellow African butter. since i thought it was shea butter, i put it on my face. do you know if i can put the African butter on my face? Thanks

  • How do you tell the difference between African Butter and Shea Butter that has been mixed with palm oil? I bought some Yellow Shea Butter (the vendor told me it was yellow because of the palm oil) and I also bought Ivory Shea Butter. I bought the yellow shea butter because I've heard good things about palm oil.

You also say that African Butter and Shea Butter have different properties so...what are the properties of African Butter?

  • thank you soooo much for letting us know the TRUTH!! I had extremely bad eczema. And my friend brought me some shea butter from Ghana. And the eczema went away in 2 weeks. I have been using shea butter ever since. The one he gave me was white. I purchased the yellow butter from an African shop local to me and the vendor told me that the "yellow shea butter" was shea butter grown in a different region of Africa.

I like both butters but I am glad to know the truth now. Thank you.

  • thank you for clearing up!!

  • Really, this was excellent. Thank you so much for explaining this.

  • So where on the internet can you buy true sheabutter or good grade yellow african butter??

  • Can you please help me with something. Im doing some research because Im starting my own cosmetic line and Im making some body butters and lotions, etc. Ive watched your vids and some others. Im a little confused some are saying the white shea butter is refined that unrefined is yellow. Pastorstraw on here has a vid saying this. I watched another vid of people in Africa making it. It looked white in the pot. I see all yellow in the stores. Can you please tell me if the white is unrefined?

  • @cocowms6 All I know is that it is kind of off white when cold refined. Cold as in, that way it maintains it's properties. Properties as in, it stinks awful.

  • @Virkamsh Hi. I went to an African store here in TX. They had ivory and yellow shea butter. I got the ivory and the smell is ok. Its kind of nutty like. The owner told me they both are good. The yellow just has palm oil in it. The product I got came from Ghana but is distributed by another company in the US. Im just going to stick with this one. Im making some lotions and body butters. Thanks for the help.

  • that explains why i noticed the difference between my oil batch of off white butter and yellow butter. thanks for the info

  • i like both, but i like the shea butter better. it's less greasy for reasons you've stated. i especially prefer white sb for my hair and the african butter for my body in the winter.

  • Crap! I just bought this yellow tub :(

  • I actually like both. I don't understand why they would lie and market yellow african butter as shea butter. If they would have just called it its real name, african butter. Im sure people would have still bout it by the name african butter and it would not be as much confusion as it is.

  • I got da right one , yay ! :) thanks 4 da info cus I thought da yellow was da right one , gud thing I saw this vid my shea butter is off -white like dat one u showed

  • one more thing...does anyone know where to get the white shea butter? Any sites? I'm in PA and it is hard to find the white butter.

  • Thank you sooo much for this explanation on the Shea butters. I thought there was a difference. For me the white shea butter is more moisturizing. The African shea butter seemed to dry my skin which is when i started to get confused about the colors. Anyway... I appreciate your video history of the butters. (especially since I was about to put the wrong one on my hair...again)

  • Oh my god... My family used to use the off-white stuff for when we were sore. It is readily available in our village. They told me it is shea butter. Now, when I look for shea butter in America, it is YELLOW and I think "... what is this?" I cannot believe it now! No wonder the yellow butter is not easing my sore muscles!

  • Fuck you are so hot!!

  • HEY! I'm so glad to meet a fellow kenyan doing videos on youtube about hair! I know not all our hair is alike but it still feels good! Thanks for clearing up this issue too! I have the Now foods, 100% Natural Shea Butter (my mom bought it) and I was hoping that it was the unrefined kind!

  • Wow! I'm learning somthing new!

  • THANK YOU! This is the best explanation I've seen so far.
