  • you can see her hand shaking when she fell to her knees, yet she got up with this huge smile on her face to assure the audience and laughs it off... RIP

  • The time where she almost collapses is at 3:30

  • Carmen Miranda suffered a heart-attack and yet she kept performing...She deserves a badass of the century award!

Heart-attacks have brought down sooo many strong and otherwise healthy military-type guys and they weren't able to do keep going like Carmen. Respect Carmen Miranda...respect!

  • An irreplaceable artist. Great Carmen!

  • Carmen's death, reported in the national and worldwide news daileys the very next day, after this television filming - splashed over the front pages of every major newspaper - was an incredible shock because her virbrant talent and endless energy made her passing seem too unbearably unreal to be believed. (I went back and looked at the "mircofilm copies" of the major newspapers of the day, and can fully attest to this!). Bless her heart and thanks for the smiles she brang - and still brings!

  • No doubt she was a Trouper, watching this you could tell something was wrong before she droped to her knees, Some reports say she didn't know what happen, but she had to have know what happen or at least know something was wrong.

  • she kept a smile on all the time

  • Wow.. it must have taken forever to rehearse this segment!

  • Fantastic perfomance and love for arts. Bravo!!!

  • It's kind of haunting to see someone having a heart attack on camera, and no one knowing it. How awful.

  • @nigelrugby , I agree it is haunting to see. the same thing happen to Red Foxx during rehearsals for The Royal Family, he suffered a fatal heart attack on the set. Cast and Crew thought he was doing his his classic "I'm coming, Elizabeth!" fake heart attack routine, but it turned out to be Real when he fell to the Floor which was NOT part of that routine. Sad that all theses legends are gone now.

  • And how Durante responds to the moment seamlessly. Two great great great legends, why oh why can't we have performers like these anywhere no matter how far we look.

  • :( RIP

  • She must have had some big balls under that dress to keep going while having a heart attack.

  • That is amazing! At 3:45 Carmen says, "I'm out of breath!" to which Jimmy responds, "i'll take your larynx!". What a cover. And nobody knew what was to come. I was not aware of this terrible turn concerning a true legend. The term "trooper' seems rather trite here. This gal was all guts and glory as far as I'm concerned. You see also why Jimmy was one of the great entertainers of all time.

  • @NYVoice - She was a heavy smoker and a heavy drinker and then was addicted to drugs. She went back home for 4 months to dry out cold turkey and was not really completely recovered and her husband singed her up with a bunch of TV shows to do and she came back to the US. The years of abuse took it's toll on her heart. She went home and entertained until 2:00am and died in her sleep. I don't think she knew she was having a heart attack on the show.

  • That about says it. Everyone would like that "no smoke no drink" reputation but it's seldom true. Heck, Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi) was a closet alcoholic and that's what killed him. Why Carmen would be pushed into performing when she obviously wasn't well was a complete and utter disregard by her reckless husband. That's abuse all by itself.

  • @NYVoice - He was all about the money but she was Catholic and wouldn't dream of divorcing him. But in 55 if you had a heart problem, you just had a heart problem and made out your will. There was nothing to be done. You were supposed to go home, take it easy and count the days till you were dead. She kept up full speed doing what she enjoyed. Even in 59 when my Grandfather died there was still no modern marvel treatment available. And it may have been a silent MI which are the worst.

  • @NYVoice It wasn't "I'll take your larynx" That Durante said. It was "I'll take your lines" A great example of the live performers back then and their ability to Adlib.

  • I KNEW SOMEBODY WOULD CORRECT ME ON THAT! Yes, it was "lines". Busted! Wasn't it also amazing how Carmen, professional as she was, kept her cool after such a health scare? She smiled and stayed in character as if she were simply out of breath. Unfortunately she was running out of time. So sad, it'a almost indescribable.

  • Loved her in "Copacabana" with Groucho Marx.

She married the co-producer of that film...her only marriage. It turned out to be an abusive relationship that caused a nervous breakdown.

  • In 3:31 she falls on her knees ... So weird yet they covered it so well! We will miss you so much Carmen!!!!!

  • When you watch this just think, she was dead very soon afterward.

  • @unclealand Yes, a glimpse into the cruelties embedded in life that we do not often confront.

  • They were both troupers of the old school. Watch how Durante instinctively stops the music and covers for Carmen to finish the live scene. She was a class act as well. We miss you Carmen, wherever you are.

  • she's in a world of shit right there, had a heart attack while making the number and finished it off with a big load of stress over her shoulders.

  • So sad... I read that she was on amphetamines and barbiturates, amphetamines can blow your heart out, and that's probably what happened... Barbiturates make you sleep.

  • What troopers these are all were. I am in awe of Durante, Miranda and Manana.

  • The heart attack is just after 3:28 , if that's what you came here to see.

  • I'm trying to figure out who the other fella is?? I recognize him but just can't place him.

  • @kerrybush000 The guy dancing with her? That is Durante.

  • @ItsWolfeh WOW, if someone did not know that was Durante, I mean SERIOUSLY!

I was asking about the other guy that was there in the beginning (the first guy that walks out from behind the column at about 0:05). Do you know who he is?

  • @kerrybush000 Ohhh I see lol. That is Eddie Jackson I think, I'm not too sure. I found on a site that they said he was on that episode, I can't find anything else unfortunately, most sites just say it was just Eddie and Miranda.

  • @ItsWolfeh YES!!! That's it, Eddie Jackson! Thank you so much.

  • @kerrybush000 That guy looks like Tito Puente to me...but I'm not sure.

  • @kerrybush000 Nevermind I saw that the question has been answered lol.

  • I think it came a bit earlier. I have never seen her have to "hang on to her hat" as it were. She had to keep it steady. That is something she was a pro at. I think she lost a bit of balance as it kicked in. Just my thoughts though.

  • She may be remembered by some as the Brazilian, fruit hat wearing samba entertainer, but i think i'll always remember her as the amazing woman who, i think i can say, displayed "Courage in the face of adversity". I don't think any other performers in history have or ever will carry on with the show after suffering a heart attack, although that makes it no easier to watch.

All i can say is Good on you Carmen!

If only more entertainers showed your courage and determination!

    You will be remembered

  • Eu fico tão triste vendo isso, ela fez de tudo pra nao perde a pose, sempre com sorriso no rosto, a cara dela nao tá como antes , aquela carmen miranda pra cima, chega doi no meu peito quando vejo essa imagem , :<

  • What a woman of Substance...

  • Carmen Miranda was one of Jimmy Durante's best guests. But hilarous hell always broke loose whenever he had Helen Traubel the wagnarian opera singer on. If anyone can come up with one of those videos, I guarantee it'll blow everyone's mind. Superhartline

  • This is the performance that killed her. Both her and Jimmy Durante acted very quickly, but she was clearly not so well. Of course neither knew the gravity of the situation. they should have cut to commercial and sent her to the hospital, but there was not much they could do back then for heart problems. She would die hours after this show.

  • How do they know that she had a heart-attack at that point? He said "stop the music" before she 'fell' and wouldn't she have made any sort of sign if she was having a heart attack?

  • @Ganwokakeru She died shortly after this, definitely of a heart attack. I think it is assumed that this is the beginning of it because of the symptoms she exhibits. Heart attacks, especially in youngish women, are not necessarily obvious.

  • And who's that jerk-off that wants to sue somebody because he bumped his head onstage, Bret Michaels? He couldn't carry Carmen's hat! She was one of the great ones!

  • may she rest in peace it's so heartbreaking to watch this. she took barbiturates and amphetamines plus smoked and drank too much it all killed her.

  • I watched the documentary "Bananas Is My Business" & showed that at 3:31 (on this video) she collasped :(

  • It's funny people think about Carmem Miranda as a image of the Latin America, but she was from Portugal and barely spoke spanish. And she was even criticized in Brazil for bluring and mixing the spaniard and brazilian cultures, as if it was just one thing. But she is really a great artist, loved wherever she was.

  • I guess the smoking and the fast paced dancing was too much for her.

  • RIP Carmen, such a tragedy a life cut too short, you will forever be remembered God bless you xxx

  • What a wonderful lady

  • Amazing how quickly she pulled herself. It almost looks like it's part of the act especially when he says, "I'll take your lines".

  • Poor little girl... you can see she was not okay during the whole number... it's so sad. That's the result of years of long hours work plus heavy use of uppers and downers.

  • It really mind blowing to watch something like this knowing she died a short while after. You never know when your time is up it's so strange and bizarre. Don't wanna think to deeply about it really because it's upsetting to think. I was just watching Dorothy Kilgallen on her last WML appearance and it's very strange to think those were peoples last hours and they didn't know it.

  • Wow, this is true Hollywood. She finished her performance regardless. You don't see stars that make an impact like this anymore or who have the glamour. Mickey Rooney said it best when he stated "There will never be or ever can be another Carmen Miranda".

  • The program was NOT live, but on film. Carmen suffered a mild heart attack in the middle of dancing with Durante. She drops to her knees, but quickly recovers to finish the show. What a trouper! At the end of the show, she kisses Durante, dances to the center of the stage, blows the audience a kiss, and dances out a door, which Durante closes. Carmen Miranda died later that night at her Beverly Hills home of a second--and fatal--heart attack. God bless this wonderful performer.

  • Miss Miranda actually died of heart failure, brought about by pre-eclampsia and acute hypertension from an undisclosed pregnancy. Although she had battled addiction to prescription drugs, she had quit them during a stay of many weeks in Rio in the early months of 1955. While nearly every source on Internet states that she suffered a mild heart attack during this footage, there is simply no way of knowing that. She was likely in a very weakened condition. Tragic enough in any event.

  • @Lampshade51 The show must go on! MARVELOUS, watch her bio here on you tube, what an amazingly talented lady. You're born with it, they can't teach it to you :)

  • @Lampshade51 Yes, this was live. What you are seeing is a kinescope of the live broadcast. A kinescope was a 16mm film recording of a live broadcast made for repeating in other markets unable to take the live feed at the time of the original broadcast. This has all of the elements of a live broadcast with the spontaneous audience heard in the background.

  • What a shame. She wasn't very old either

  • 3:33 was the beginning of the end :-( She died that very same night . RIP

  • good night Carmen..sweet dream princess...we miss you

  • I hope she "got going and had a happy time" in the place she liked most (it's the best) The West! I enjoy your music daily. I'm only 35 and you were gone WAY before my time... Wish I could have seen you Yippsee-I-O and Kayaeah!

  • en el minuto 3:32 a ella le da el primer ataque y cae, pero Jimmy la sujeta...horas despues muere en su casa de un segundo infarto

  • it was the drugs that she was taking that caused her heart failure. im sure it was the stress of hollywood stardom that killed her.

  • 3:31 just kills me every time I watch it. You can tell she's hurt but she continues. Great performer.

  • That dear brilliant entertainer...what a trouper...she ended her life the way she lived , by giving the people sheer entertainment! RIP...one of the all time greats!

  • god luv her

  • The expression of pain is clear on her face in the moment her heart fails! Some people recalls that she complained of pain in the arms and was given an injection during the show filming! She died a few hours later at home! She was highly intoxicated by prescripted drugs and alcohol in those final times, prescriptions given by her personal physician, a certain Doctor Marxer, under the supervision of hubby David Sebastian!

  • @listeningtoit David Sebastian, the low-life-double-dealing-wife-beating-gold-digger? I don't usually speak ill of the dead but, what a douche bag and predator he must have been. I'm sure Carmen was getting something she wanted from him in return (at least at first) but why did she have to let it ruin her whole life? Maybe her strict Catholicism was the ultimate downfall because she stayed with a scumbag for the WRONG reasons! Just venting here... carry on...

  • It's so sad. The whole bit is so funny and wonderfully performed, only to have this sad incident overshadowing it. Ah, well. Miss Miranda got to die in a way that most great performers would love to go: entertaining. Well, just having entertained, but you know.

  • when she said she was out of breath thats when she had her mild heart attack. god bless her soul she was such an amazing entertainer.

  • Wow, what a trooper...the show must go on was her last thought, I'm certain. Bless you Carmen, and all the wonderful tuti-fruiti talent that you had. Really LOVED all your recordings with The Andrews Sisters, too.

  • Wow, what a trooper...the show must go on was her last thought, I'm certain. Bless you Carmen, and all the wonderful tuti-fruiti talent that you had. Really LOVED all your recordings with The Andrews Sisters, too.

  • God Bless her, a fighter to the end.

  • When she kneeled down that's the moment she suffered her mild heart attack. :(

  • Goodnight Carmen Love You !!

  • @EEO - 3:31: wow, you're right!

  • Great video, specially part 1 of 2 with Carmen´s version of DELICADO . If you have access to it, try and post Carmen´s complete episode in the MILTON BERLE show. That episode contains some rare gems of Carmen displaying her talent as a comedian.

  • Sorry, that was my younger brotner being a dick.

  • It's crazy how she had a hear attack on stage. She seems perfectly healthy and she's moving great. It's kind of like how Josephine Baker died days after her final show after seeming perfectly fine and healthy. Only if she had known what was going on, she may have lived longer. RIP

  • She took barbituates and amphetamines!

  • Heart attack - 3:31 ?

  • @EvenEvenOdd Evidently so. I had a heart attack nearly a year ago. It lasted more than an hour. I was lucky...although I waited till the next day to go to the hospital. I had five blocked arteries and needed a quadruple by-pass. I had trouble with my heart from May of 2008 and thought it was my back all the time. It almost killed me. So many people have died suddenly from heart attacks and didn't know they were having problems until it was too late.

  • @bdzmusicprod Sorry to hear about your heart attack. I hope you're OK now.

  • Actually Carmen had a very good diction after so many years living in Hollywood, but the industry forced her to keep speaking with a heavy accent.
