At 1:40 in this video i would like you to look at the wake of the Steve Irwin. To me it looks like the Irwin is going relatively straight and slow, compared to how fast it appears to be turning.
The only conclusion I can draw is that the Irwin has to slow and turn hard to avoid the whaler cutting in front of it. The Irwin is now clearly going to miss the Unko Maru, after making the move, one that it shouldnt have had to make.

There is no scientific way to estimate whale populations. That means Japan has no idea whether its harvest is sustainable or not. Whales were hunted to near extinction in the 20th century and most species have not yet recovered. The Japanese whalers can't even identify the right species a lot of the time- they have been catching fin and blue whales and selling the meat. There are less than 1000 blue whale left. There is no scientific way to estimate whale populations. That means Japan has no idea whether its harvest is sustainable or not. Whales were hunted to near extinction in the 20th century and most species have not yet recovered. The Japanese whalers can't even identify the right species a lot of the time- they have been catching fin and blue whales and selling the meat. There are less than 1000 blue whale left. The area that is being hunted is in the AAT which under treaty has strict rules preventing the use of force. The Japs know this and they know they we would lose our legal standing if we asserted ourselves beyond what the treaty allows. This is why Australia has committed to the IWC whale sanctuary, and also why Japan deliberately abuses the ruling and buys votes to subvert the IWC.
Past that, yes all our previous governments have sucked up to Japan and every other large trading partner.

An assumption based on ideology and not on fact. These ships are part of a larger fleet so these theatrics only cause minor delays.
Greenpeace and also claiming to protect whales without the ramming, etc. And these people weren't singled out for a condemnation in a IWC press release like Sea Shepherd was in March 2008 ("Statement On Safety At Sea") - One of many IWC condemnations since 1987.
