@arbutus27 He was sweet. I liked him in the series. Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon was HORRIBLE though. Thank God REM made up for the crap with a cool song
theme always makes me think of Alex . Guy was so soulful and kind of melancholy at the same time. He was the only one who knew he was always going to be a cab driver and was not just "doing this" until something better came along. Of all theme songs on TV this has to be my favorite. Stuff like modern family today is good but can't touch these classic TV shows like Taxi.
For you guys who referenced this show and bedtime, I so associate this song with that wonderful time of late may/ early June when school was about to let out. It was light longer and mom wasn't quite as rigid with bedtime... I was able to catch an episode and felt cooler. The smooth relaxing tones of this theme take me back to those innocent days when the first warm evening breezes blow. Well taking my mental time machine back to reality now.
@senordumas For me, it takes me back to the early days of summer, going shopping downtown with my Mom on the bus, and always coming home with some new goodies :)
Those days were precious, and I'm glad this theme is a part of that.
What a great song! It totally captures the essence of plot, theme, and characters. I can't imagine it fitting anything else. Thanks for posting such a clean version!
Does anyone know if that episode is posted, when Bobby got the soap opera and he quit the cab company in blazes and told Louie off...but then Bobby's character was killed off and Bobby had to ask for his job back? The way Alex told Louie not to be mean to Bobby because "it wasn't right"? Christ that was funny, especially the way Louie said: "Reiger, I'm gonna let Wheeler have it because he's a LOSER!" (and then he starts chanting): "He's a loser! He's a loser! Nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh!"
True Free energy devices exist,But the powerfull Oil business won't alow common ppl to know this,Find a motor that needs no fuel or input at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Be a part of the energy revolution!
This was one of those shows that produced many a hilarious moment jump started the carrers of Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, very easily wouldve been great if Andy Kaufman lived because he wouldve been something special too!
New York was cool as fuck in the 70s. I wish I could've experienced it. Regardless, I always loved the Taxi theme as a kid. Sort of relaxing in its own way.
@wysoft There were some cool things about it back then, like the Yanks' version of the "Bronx Zoo", Studio 54, etc., but overall it was an absolute HELLHOLE utterly infested with crime & filth! Grew up on Wrong Island and visited often so I know. Son of Sam was pretty much just the tip of the iceberg. Granted it was a VASTLY better time to be alive than today, but '70s NYC has been glamorized quite a bit beyond what it actually was.
Wow... just listening a few seconds took me way back. I hated when this show would come on because when this show came on it was always time to go to bed. 32 years ago? Really? Oh to have the stresses of a ten year old again.
Wow... just listening a few seconds took me way back. I hated when this show would come on because when this show came on it was always time to go to bed. 32 years ago? Really? Oh to have the stresses of a ten year old again.
you guys dont even know how hard it was to find this song. its been stuck in my head all day and i didnt know what show it was from. so i had to go threw ALL OF THE 70'S AND 80'S shows to find this tune.
@Ampsta09 Can't believe they don't make good TV like this like they used to it's all talk shows crime shows (old ones were better) court shows Reality Shows. I miss the good ol fashion sitcoms sucked the show didn't go on into 84 would have been cool but then again seeing Tony Danza a year later on Who's The Boss made up for it
I have the full recording of this sublime Bob James composition on CD somewhere but for some reason it's just not as fantastically funky as the TV cut.
The small intro vamps were often as good as the opening theme. I'm talking about the music played when the camera panned outside of the Sunshine Cab Co (Hudson St in Manhattan, now apartments) and into the set, usually as Jeff Conaway strutted across the garage in his flared jeans. Funky beats indeed.
"What does the yellow light mean?" Any professional actors out there who can explain to me how the cast of TAXI managed to keep from cracking up during that scene will be helping me to understand one of the great mysteries of acting. Is it concentration? Some sort of psychological sublimation? An example of the Method in action? Please respond, and thanks!
Televison comedy didn't improve in the late 1970s and 80s. "Taxi" is a good example of this development. It can't compete with "All in the Family" or "Maude". I was so happy to discover the great comedies from the 70s after a childhood filled with too many episodes of "Taxi", "The Cosby Show", "Family Ties" and "Growing Pains in the XXX"
As someone who was born in 1987, I have to thank my mother for turning me on to shows like Taxi, especially considering the crap that reigns supreme on TV today
My favorite episode was when Reverend Jim bangs his head on the soda machine outside of Louis' cage at the beginning of the show, but doesn't feel the pain of impact until the end of the show (3 days later in "show" time). What a hoot!
Listen, someone's got to say it - the bumper titles at the beginning and the end of this are just -painful-, and and on top of that, the beginning of the theme is cut off.
@Mahocky more like indian, and no offence as well, its the truth,i live in philly and am one miniscule molacule pakastani,u would never even guess so i have no right defending or offending a whole rase of people, but yeah most cab drivers i see are indian;dots not feathers,im also 23 so i know nothing according to everyone in the civilized world so bring on the retarded angry responses,i really enjoy them so make em good bitch
@Mahocky That's not necessarily true, Mahocky, and shame on you for making such a broad generalization. Maybe in New York they would be all Asian but here in San Francisco, there is quite a mixture of asian, arab, caucasion and black. I wouldn't say one ethnicity clearly dominates.
Thanks for this link! Couldn't get this song out of my head for the last few weeks and finally visualized the "driving over the bridge" scene to figure out it was Taxi!
i used to be able to catch the last twenty minutes of this show when i was at work for the world trade center 34 years ago doing janitorial we would have a cigarette and coffee unwind i always felt like i could take on another shift i was so refreshed afterward but 9 hours was my max workday
Yeah... it's just one of those mysteries of life ... great theme tune ... maybe made greater by the nostalgic feeling to those of us who were kids when this aired in the late 70's!
This was when NYC was cool and dangerous and 'street'.I caught the tail end of this vibe going to the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade every year with my father in the late 70's/80's.
One major flaw, in my opinion, in an otherwise great series... Andy bleeding Kaufman. WHAT was he there for?
