  • To my ear the real 60 Paul is mellower with or without the pickups. A true test would be using the same guitar with the different sets of pickups.

  • Nice. I see Dave about twice a week cause he comes in the grocery store I work at EVERY SINGLE NIGHT to buy his gallon of water and organic veggies and frozen organic dinners. He eats healthy. hahaha.. and we can't talk long about music cause his common-law-wife says, "ok Dave, let's go."

  • I'll probably get hate mail but I didn't like the sound of either very much!

Maybe the amp. But just meh bland to me & the OD sound is not very smooth .. its buzzy

  • @EntertainerCentral My friend, while I appreciate your comments, it seems that you have missed the point of this demo. It is to demonstrate the similarities between SD's pu's compared to real paf's. The tone of the amps is inconsequential. If you don't dig the tone, that's fine, but try to be objective and give me your opinion on the SD pu's and how they sound relative to the paf's. Thanks, dre

  • @dretot Fair enough .. the sound signature is fairly close considering the differences in the wood, bridge & saddles. You presumably used teh same strings ... sounded like you had the condensor mic in the foreground still on yes? I seemed to hear a little accoustic sound of the guitar. If not what mic did you use please and was the amp and mic in a separate room?

  • @EntertainerCentral Thanks for that. Yes the camera mic was in the mix. Both lp's had a new set of 10's, and I set my lp up the same as the '60 (tailpiece hieght, break angle over the bridge). Amps were a '65 deluxe reverb and jtm45 clone, close mic-ed w/akg 414's in an iso both. I didn't spend much time on the amp tone since I only had the guitar for an hour, just a quick clean and dirty dry tone. Check my youtube page for the (close-mic only) version of the demo. dre

  • The bridge pickups were nearly identical...very nice. The PAF is slightly heavier sounding, but quite close. I'd like to hear a set in my GO.

  • Oh I know about the differences in the wood. I own 6 LP's including a early 80's Gibson heritage 80 with Shaws(which I did switch out for a while), 2005 Gibson Jimmy Page and a couple of custom shops and everyone of them is different (just like women!).

  • First I would like to apologize for all of the idiotic questions or comments that have posted here. Anyway, the pickups sound great but I can close my eyes and hear a bit of a difference. I may be wrong but the PAF (bridge) seems to have, for lack of a better description, a more compressed chime. I'm definately going to check out the SD's, because so far they're the closest I've ever heard. p.s. Great video!

  • @nascobra Thanks for your comments. The majority of the difference is in the wood, but remember, the burst has a mid 60's pat# pu in the bridge so it has a slightly different tone. Dave's pu's are incredibly close to the paf's. Check out my vids of his vl2's and vl3's. They are even better. dre

  • To my ears, unplugged the vintage burst sounds more open and woody while the historic sounds tighter and brighter. However by the time you're playing electrically through the JTM45 the pickups really equalized the tones between both guitars! Damn near indistinguishable.

  • What a great Demo! I wish everyone was this thorough, I'm sold!

  • you cannot top the tone of that bridge position pickup in the 1960 at 4:27. so amazing

  • Wow! Great video. It's easy to tell by the acoustic sound that the old one is heavier. I wouldn't mind owning either of these. Sounds like the old neck PAF has more windings than the SD neck. I prefer the SD neck. Both bridge pickups are great. I wouldn't get a second mortgage to buy the old guitar. I'd go with the reissue with the SD pickups.

  • thats a killer reissue!

  • these sound great but theres a vintage lab 2 set now ..im waiting for a set of over the pond guy pafs cant wait!!!

  • How much does the 1960 weighs?????

Sounds like it's a little heavier!

  • @pleximanic You're right. Not sure exactly how much, but it's a little heavier than mine. So maybe 8.75 or 9lbs.

  • That historic Les Paul must be chambered, it sounds better to me than the original 1960 both acoustically and electrically!

  • @pleximanic ha ha, thanks, but it's not chambered. It weighs 8.5lbs and has been refined. The refin really opened up the tone. Glad you like it and thanks for listening :)

    dre

  • alot of fret buzz, sounds like you need a set up or heavier strings.. but that 60 sounds good

  • @kristofferpence I think you're hearing the camera mic that's picking up the studio monitors and the guitars acoustically. Both guitars are set up with 10s (medium action) and the historic was recently plekked. Listen to the other demo close mic only I removed the camera mic.

  • I love the older Paul's acoustic tone. It has the real Mahogany wood tone with Mucho spank. I have a 92' reissue of that same guitar with the xtra deep body carve top and slightly thinner one piece body and slim taper neck. I have a 2000 honey burst that exhibits the same tonal difference both acoustically and through amp. Rounder and fuller but not as spanky and hard to control feed back more so on the 2002. They both sound better every year. Those pickups are very nice. Highly Recommended.

  • what a great demo. Congratulations.

  • this video is totally awesome. during the clean comparison, you can really hear the difference between the guitars, but mostly in the neck and middle positions... during the bridge comparison, i had a hard time hearing any difference between the two (probably a result of the general accentuated treble of that position...). obviously, during the jtm comparison, this is even more true. i can't wait to get mine in the mail!!!! my paul is waiting... and i sold an amp to get ready for a second set.

  • fmilktoast, Congradulations! You are going to be totally blown away! The difference in tone is in the wood(burst vs. historic). The vl's are virtually identical to the paf's. I actually prefer the vl neck to the paf neck! I'm preparing for another set myself!

post a clip when you get your's!

    dre

  • The Acoustic Comparison is critical to understanding how great these pickups really are. If you don't have great speakers... get out your headphones!! Listen carefully to the acoustic comparison first.

  • listen to the clip with your eyes closed, very difficult to tell them apart. all i can detect is the slight brightness of the newer guitar

  • Great job on the clip. Sounds excellent. Recording the acoustic comparison was a great idea, you can definitely hear the newer guitar is brighter. It sounds like it needs to be played for 40 years :)

Can't wait to get one of your pickups!

  • hey just a question..do guitars get less bright the more you play them? ive got a 58 reissue and its fairly bright at times it drives me nuts ive been looking at diffrent pick ups rather than the stock burstbuckers just not sure..cheers.

  • I don't really know. It might have more to do with the old guitars being made from original growth wood. The trees where older when they were cut for the vintage guitars. Try adjusting your tone knobs or use a higher value capacitor (0.033uF) if you find your guitar too bright.

  • yeah i know that about the old growth wood not sure if i beleive all that stuff..anyway yeah i was thinking of putting some better caps in there maybe some real paper in oil caps like the originals..

  • yo bro. over many years the moisture in the wood of some guitars will escape and cause the wood to sound different, which accounts for many tonal changes which can include increased 'warmth'. anyway, you should try using not only paper-in-oil .022 caps, but also using the 50's gibson wiring schematic to rewire your guitar, including using 500k pots and quality wire (not cheap plastic-coated wire). all of that will smooth out your pickups quite a bit.

  • thanks for the reply, yeah ive been wanting to do all those changes but its hard finding a good tech guy here in the north uk that knows what hes's doing..plus finding the parts i need here isnt easy either..i guess il have to ship the parts in need from somewhere in the us or something..where that is i dont have a clue:) cheers mate..

  • not sure where u are in the north but have u tried Jim Fleeting in Rippon he's real good!!

  • @satch60 hi thanks for the reply..im in sunderland mate so its a bit of trek going that far..

if anyone knows anyone in the sunderland area reading this then give me a shout please..cheers:)

  • I like the PAF better... it's grittyer..a nd more raw... more emotional. But that is (of coarse) just my opinion. His pickup definitely sounds good though.. i would describe it as more smooth and more smooth and rounded...

  • You are hearing the difference between the guitars, not the pickups. It's the wood that is giving that more organic sound.

  • The burst has these throaty, vocal mids that the GT doesn't. It's more noticeable with the DR.

  • agreed.... it's got a growl to it... i tink it may have to do with age... dust... etc. but maybe not..

  • I want to point out that the acoustic differences in the guitars is making the real PAFs sound a little more mellow because the guitar itself is a little more mellow, also the PAF neck pickup in the burst is a hotter wind than mine, so its a tad darker. Dre did a great demo here, very well done, good job!

  • the originals sound like they have a little more throat and depth. but wow! those pickups are really really impressive too say the least !

  • Tell us more about the JTM45 specs. I didn't like either one until you plugged into the JTM.

  • thru the deluxe - the 60 by a nose. the marshall - toss up. gain in an amp is the great equalizer. at "7" through a screaming amp a First Act guitar sounds like this.

  • Hey don't diss the first acts... there make custom shop guitars that rock... I have a one off from them..it's the best I have ever played (made in Boston, MA at the custom shop).

  • The JTM45 comparisons are virtually indistinguishable.

Thanks for this, it's made my choice very easy.

    Bill

  • Wow this is amazing, so now I got to to try some of your pups LOL!!!

  • Hey where can I get the pickups I want a pair NOW!!

  • Brilliant! pretty amazing pickups keep it coming.

  • Noitpure, Thank you. I only wish I had more time with that burst!

  • Great demo! Thanks for taking the time to do this!
