Very nicely sung. Great aria. But IMO it sounds best of all in countertenors renditions. The most beautiful version I've ever heard is Nicholas Spanos's
cuando todo lo sólido se desvanece en el aire, puede ser que aún quede algo, no sé si es la esperanza, debe ser algo más bien real que hay que descubrir...
Dear Lorraine-I know some people who burst into tears when hearing this when the album came out.
Bartoli does it nicely on her new CD-but doesn't touch this-and for some strange reason leaves out the recitative with these baroque arias it should always be there-otherwise the balance is lost
@CrystalFlames "frondi" instead of "fronde" too. They are little imperfections of pronounce: Italian in not an easy language indeed. Anyway the global effect is great
Few can sing "pants roles" well, and we lose a singer who certainly could. While in London, Handel sometimes switched from female singer to castrato, or the other way, depending upon who was available to him, and occasionally making revisions to the scores.
I have seen this in 2 keys, the one I am singing is higher, but I believe correct. Can anyone tell me which key was originally used, and why there are 2? Thanks. Also feel free to comment on the video above from Littlesongbirde..
oh god THANK YOU SO MUCH for this! I find myself having to fend-off the self-titled "purists", inc those who believe no-one should sing it as castrati are now mercifully a thing of the past. Been sayong to people he looked for the best people available even in situ.....but i get shot down :(
@pianomags It's hard to believe some people are so "pure" that they would deprive humanity of hearing such sublime music out of a slavish devotion to the past. That's just "pure" BS.
Is she a alto/mezzo? I thought actually she sings soprano as well? Sounds lovely here. I humbly attach a video that I uploaded. Thank you very much for your work - I will see if you have anything for my voice.
why would god take such a glorious voice from us so soon? Makes me think that there isn't one.But we do have reminders of you, through your soulful singing of this aria
Sublime. No-one else can match this. sorely missed.

How can you not weep listening to this, or her singing Bach's "Schlummert ein," knowing that this angel was taken away so young?

@Cyberbob1987 I think he started calling himself "George Frideric Handel" instead of "Georg Friedrich Händel" once he moved to England.

This is the only key I want to hear this in... and it makes me tear up. This song has no effect on me in any other key.

I was thinking of this exquisite version when I heard Bartoli's new recording recently. Her's is fine enough, but doesn't approach this.
Strangely, she excludes the recitative which is essential for the balance in these baroque arias.
Dear Lorraine-I was very fortunate to hear her 8 x live

Why does she sing "giungia" instead of "giunga" in the recit?
Other than that, beautiful.
