I have one of the pipes you are talking about and they smoke like a dream, the outer portion of the bowl is 2 3/4" but the bowl itself is normal sized.

actually that is a regular sized kalabash pipe - and the bowl is big but not that HUGE - I doubt it was in there for 'comic' effect ;-)
