The video quality is very poor. But the important content is in the audio. The danger of depleted uranium is that once it's in the body, it's almost impossible for the body to get rid of it. So the exposure to radiation is long-term and concentrated on nearby tissues.
I don't understand how the radioactivity of depleted uranium is a danger when its less than natural uranium, and natural uranium's radiation isn't much higher than the normal background radiation you are exposed to every day.

I used to watch this video every month or so. my squad leader forced us to watch it. he had depleted uranium poisoning from Gulf War I. Well as far as I know the "238", "235" and "234" numbers represent the electron count inside the uranium atom. This is known as an atom's "atomic weight" so U238 becomes U235 and U234 over time. I don't know the atomic weight of lead only that all uranium depletes to lead over a great stretch of time.

Uranium-238's radiation is only harmful at all if you actually manage to get some inside you (i.e. you get impaled by a HUGE chunk of shrapnel, or get a uranium round stuck inside you). And if that happened, radiation poisoning would, personally, be the least of my worries.
Granted, there is a much larger issue with its chemical toxicity. It can easily break into a fine dust, which is harmful when inhaled. But, if you cite radioactivity as a hazard it indicates you know little ofth subject
I stands to reason that DU dust wouldn't be a good thing to be around. But neither is the fallout from a lot of modern weapons. DU was used because it worked. it's really not the size. it is the structure and surface area that matter and this "fairly large" particle is in fact comprised of many many 1 nano-meter particles which increases the surface area greatly. think of many small marbles that are set up to make a beach ball sized object. 100x surface area at least

Well as far as I know the "238", "235" and "234" numbers represent the electron count inside the uranium atom. This is known as an atom's "atomic weight" so U238 becomes U235 and U234 over time. I don't know the atomic weight of lead only that all uranium depletes to lead over a great stretch of time.
It is man who mines the ore and then separates the three atoms to make their creepy shit. in the natural state uranium is mixed all weights and even lead is mixed in.

I was an explosive ordinance specialist for the USAF I think I know. And I have training in disarming and recovering nuclear weapons. That includes deplete uranium sabots and Ammunition. Can't you see that it's bigger than simply "us vs them"? There is no "them". The truth is that WE are killing US! This is a human family and the real "fight" is the sane vs. the insane. The use of these weapons is clearly a manifestation of insanity magnified to a scale never seen before in the history of this planet. If I don't like it can I leave the planet? NO! The worst of the worst crimes against us are committed by "respectable", "upstanding" citizens and usually with the support of a brainwashed society. Use of radioactive munitions is so totally irresponsible, and so typical of the DoD -- there are some places we really don't want to go. It's so unsurprising and yet so sickening, that we as a nation would contenance the use of such toxic materials - and it's not a backup threat like nukes in the cold war, we used these munitions in Iraq. There are true moral absolutes, and if we can live with ourselves in this case, then the US has lost any claim to holding the moral high ground in the world.

I was in the gulf war, I served on the front line with the 24th in iraq and was in and around vehicles destroyed by this stuff. I am sick and my son has 5 severe birth defects of his heart and has to take hormone shots for the rest of is life. I know it may be hard for some of out there to believe but there are people who love this country enough to risk our lives for your freedom. Please don't ridicule our sacrifice with thoughtless political comments. when you demean the effort you demean us.

According to statistical studies comparing children of DU exposed Vets, Children of Vets who were not exposed to DU and Children of the population at large, indicates the birth defect rates are equivalent.
However, I do not know if the same studies have shown any contribution of the vaccines. The vaccines may cause health problems.

Had to drill with something like this on a 40-year old aircraft carrier with 8 outdated nuclear reactors. If there was a nuclear leak and your spotted it, you are suppose to stand their like an idiot and tells others to abandon ship. A ship with 5000 people and they have 3 small decontamination rooms. Where's the article that shows him saying that (again not sarcastic I am curious and googling it didn't find anything)? And also, I reiterate that, at least simply being near DU, is not hazardous. I also reiterate that I could carry a DU shell around with me all my life and I probably wouldn't suffer any negative health effects. Although, considering I don't support the Iraq War and have no plans on joining the military, my putting that to the test is unlikely, sorry. :(

Uranium-238's radiation is only harmful at all if you actually manage to get some inside you (i.e. you get impaled by a HUGE chunk of shrapnel, or get a uranium round stuck inside you). And if that happened, radiation poisoning would, personally, be the least of my worries.
Granted, there is a much larger issue with its chemical toxicity. It can easily break into a fine dust, which is harmful when inhaled. But, if you cite radioactivity as a hazard it indicates you know little ofth subject

I stands to reason that DU dust wouldn't be a good thing to be around. But neither is the fallout from a lot of modern weapons. DU was used because it worked. The 30mm stuff went through soviet era armor like a hot knife through butter. If I had to fight, I'd sure as hell want it. BTW, I wonder if the Soviets would use it? Nahhh, I'm sure they're too environmentally aware to use something so nasty.

I'm not sure about what alternatives their are but I would prefer that a tank in front of me get knocked out by a DU round than having the tank fuck up my shit and maybe live another 20yrs then die of cancer.
Bottom line is Sr. Military leaders don't give a shit about the 20y/o on the ground only there career advancement and power.
