The Helms Bakery trucks had the best glazed donuts & cream puffs. They sounded a distinctive whistle that let you know when the bakery truck was in the neighborhood. Great looking trucks too. At one time I wanted to own one and covert it to a camper inside and leave the charming outer look/style intact. It was a great time to grow up in Los Angeles. Everyone knew of the Helms Bakery trucks, especially, on Sundays mornings when your parents would send you out to get some delicious fresh donuts.
Thank you for putting this on youtube. It brought back some good memories. As a little boy, I remember being fascinated by the large varnished oak drawers that the drive would pull out, revealing loaves of bread and donuts!
I remember those good old days too. The Helms bakery, Carnation milk man, the Watkins man. Nothing like those any more. The Helms bakery truck would come by our place every morning and the carnation guy would stop by with my order once a week. Those were the good days. I sure miss all of those great things. The watkins products were fantastic. I know Watkins and Carnation are probably still around but its not the same. They delivered your goods and it was like family...Miss it
Ah good old days! I remember the Helms truck would stop in front of my elementary school when it let out, and I would get 7 cent glazed donuts, we would line up and walk through the truck to buy our stuff. back when LA was nice.
I grew up with Helm's Bakery. You were not allowed to call them trucks- the driver would correct you- saying, "Garbage comes on trucks, this is a van!" I still remember the smell of those vans- and if you were nice the driver gave you a jelly donut or chocolate chip cookie. They ruled. Such a loss when they shut down.
Wow, this brings back old memories to me too!! As a kid I lived pretty close to where Lions Automotive is located in LA strip, from 60 to 65. This type vehicle was way behind my time. If I'm not mistaken, they used the 60's Chevy Suburban type panel truck. The Helms man opened the back doors and there was a series of deep drawers with donuts etc. I went to Helms bakery on a field trip during that time frame as well. It was like the ice cream man but with donuts! OMG, that was along time ago!
Very fond memories of the Helmsman coming through my block as a kid in the boyle Heights section of E.Los Angeles. Best Glaze doughnuts we'd ever have. Great days to be a kid in the 60's
Great video, If you need any help getting your videos or channel exposed, i use a service called thetubeviews . net it has helped 5 of my videos get ranked on the first page

I just remember the later panel vans. Those wood drawers seemed 50 feet long.
