  • "Give me the square on.. like "I'm a bitch" stance" hahaha

  • at the start you fiddle around with the setting a bit to get it right, too dark - too bright - good etc. Did you use your light meter at that point? Using that you could have gotten it right instantly right?

  • 22:15 whout have been a nice shot

  • Jared. I could watch your video's all day, everyday. They are (IMO) THE best source of informative & unbiased reviews and help video's for photography on the internet. I have yet to come across a video of yours which I haven't watched all the way through and or, enjoyed. Thank you very much for the hard work you put in. It's phenomenal to see such an excellent photographer sharing his tips and tricks with the world. You obviously love what you do, and I aspire to that. So keep up the good work!

  • @MediaLocke thanks so much for everything as well!!!

  • Your are the worst photographer I've saw in my life !!!

You've every fucking dam thing to be a photographer !

dude it's d3 it's not a toy ... you most learn about photography before you teach people !

  • @MrYBD90 haters are gonna be haters.. he has the gear, he has the willingnes to teach other people and he knows how to talk with clients.. and what are you doing? TROLLING instead of giving a constructive critique

  • @MrYBD90 stop trolling dude. either make a better vid, or s.t.f.u :)

  • He made her turn around to check out her ass. This guy is full of tricks.

  • fro knows how to bore the shit out of you...

  • you lost me at 5mins, fro knows headache! 40 mins for a five minute shoot?! WTF!

  • God I love that D3S omg

  • God DAMN i wan't that 300

  • If this guy had any game this video would have turned into a porno.

  • lol I crossed my arms too...

  • lol i'm finally glad i've found someone who's equally as enjoyably vague in directing when doing portraits

  • I am looking forward to seeing you shoot with the sigy 85 1.4 more, as I want to pick this one up, and I loved the bowling ally shots you took with it, and you seemed to really love it, and was looking forward to seeing some shallow DOF shots in this shoot, but you didnt take any wide open. I was wondering if you can answer why you kept the F stop above 2.8 for this shoot when you could have stopped down and still kept the eyes and nose in focus. Thanks!

  • This was really helpful ... thanks :D

  • 1:05... haha

  • You are the man Afroman

  • this is a great video for taking notes

  • Ok nice job! GREAT technique tips the last minute was great..the hand directions Thanks man...

  • ...and I get sucked in by the model's smile and expression too, and then forget about the hair. Well that's why we have women.

  • Don't even look at the video and just listen to Jared talk and imagine being her. Relax. Yes, he makes it easy for the newbie. I have been shooting ordinary people (not models) a lot and man it's difficult sometimes. Some people are just frightened by the camera.

  • Yeah, I'll do your full body! Lmao!

I swear I feel like I just watched a porno. All these sexual references!!! Lol

  • Lil could help her up ^_^

  • perfect

  • I'm a beginner and I think to get started, I'll just emulate everything what Fro does and find my own scenes later. Very good videos these.

  • For all you guys who says he aint a good photographer, how come hes sponsored by nikon? for gods sake...

  • @markuslowe9 have you watched a bunch of videos or is this your first? I am all about the mentality of a photographer not all about gear. You will see if you watch a lot of the past videos.

  • @JaredPolin

I disagree... I think you are mainly about the gear... I mean, you bashed the 16-35mm because it was only an F4 lens and you don't want one because you only want to carry f2.8 lenses.... yeah... not about the gear? Common man.

  • @mrsourcream Most people only want f2.8 .... I think its much more handy but you do kinda have a point

  • @mrsourcream F2.8 is for the Bokeh. On a short lens (like the 16-35) at F4 the depth of field in wider than a 300mm at f4. It's a lot smaller at 300mm 2.8 so it gives a nice blurred background.

  • @JaredPolin Hey, what's your monopod set-up?

  • Great informative video(s). Wish that I would have discovered these a year ago. Merry Xmas.

  • Wonderful shoot man ,love the exposures ,just my kind of shooting ,using ambient light and no stinky flashes and diffusers and bouncers and assistants :)) ,love that 300 but a 400 will be wonderful :) (I'm dreaming of it )

I really enjoyed this video ,thank you for sharing ,two thumbs up !

  • Fro Knows Tight Jeans

  • 34:45

  • 13:15

  • he's so awkward...

  • Jared, why were you changing your ISO setting so often? Surely with that lens and body in that lighting it could shoot fine at 200 ISO no?

  • i think you're a little bit rude to her..

    just an opinion.

  • hey guys just fast forward- this video is a waste of time

  • dude, you're shooting a million shots of her head. just shoot a few then move on, lol

  • Sit! SIT! lol

  • I learned a ton, dont listen to skyfisher2007

  • Way too slow for an instructional video... time spent better elsewhere.

  • Comment removed

  • I learned a ton about model direction from this [something I struggle with] , great video dude, love your stuff

  • I feel like I learnt some great tips on model direction here. Great job man!

  • Hey thanks a lot man and thanks to the model she is great

  • looks like a staged background with all that light.

  • tingle tangle bob

  • Cool video.

  • why dont you just use Aperture Priority if the light is changing

  • 5 Min Portrait ??? and the video is about :40 mins O.o

  • This guy doesn;t know how to talk to women.....

  • @LemonandGnarfunkel but this man definitely know how to shoot women ;)

  • @LemonandGnarfunkel You aren't supposed to hit on your model/models, it's very unprofessional. He was just trying to make her feel comfortable.

  • @LemonandGnarfunkel He knows, but he joked ;)

  • @LemonandGnarfunkel I don't know how to either. Care to share a few tips? :)

  • @LemonandGnarfunkel He's talking to a client. It's called being professional.

  • OH I cant wait to get my D3 S

  • no offense man, but she just wanna slap you :P

  • i want that shirrt!

  • Noob question... how do you know what to change (i.e. iso vs. shutter vs. f stop) as the light changes.. I noticed as the light changed you changed ISO and shutter speed... so as long as you are within workable ranges.. how do you prioritize which variable you change? (i.e. why change shutter speed vs. going to a lower ISO as it got brighter?)... I understand how each one works.. but just trying to understand if there is a priority for specific circumstances?

  • jared i have a important question did you ever find out what that guy said at 12:15? lol

  • lol thumbs up if your head itched after this video.. lol

  • Not impressed...

  • Checking out your huge lens, not you.... Trust me..

  • Awesome video

  • jealous!

  • I thought this vid would be 5 minutes, came out I had to watch a little longer. But great vid!

  • This guy is annoying as hell. but good tips.

  • Hope you do more ids of this kind...love this video

  • Also, this is a great example of time actually being an illusion. Every shoot has to proceed at it's own pace. Sometimes tension works, other times it won't. It depends on what you're trying to convey in the photos.

  • This is a great tutorial, not just on photography, but how to direct your model.

    Well done.

  • So... did you nail her?

  • sorry fro guy but 40 min is a bit to long for my youtube attention span

  • @vincentjanse Is there someone forcing you to watch with a gun pointed to your head?

  • @key00992233 no dude im just insinuating that would have watched it if it were shorter, and dont post shit about guns to strangers man that's just off

  • The video was very good and I really enjoyed watching this.....................

  • That's BIG, Yeah I know!! haha...awasome!!!

  • Why you kept saying her arms but you cropped it out?

  • plz do a 5 min portrait with the Sigma 85 1.4 !

  • I got my first DSLR on SAturday and you hav eno idea how invaluable this video is to me. I am looking into getting into portrait photography and the notes I got from ths video alone are priceless. I know i need a better camera and lenses (Olympus e520 w/ 14-54 and 50-150 lenses) but this is an excellent start...Thanks bro!!

  • great video Jarad as always. Just have a quick question if i can. I was just wondering what metering mode you use for these types of shoots.

    Many Thanks

    John

  • 28:00 very nice picture!

  • greeattt shotssss! :D

and no strobes or flashes or stuff like that :D

  • I like the smiles where the eyes are smiling, too. Not just the mouth. I like the 34:42. 23:30 is another shot I really like, even without the smile. ;)

  • What is VR?

  • @nachirobbins Vibration reduction

  • 34:26 is one of my favorites! Beautiful, natural looking smile there, and she looks casual and relaxed with the glasses in her hair. 34:46, too. I also like 13:11 -- seems like she is listening intently here. :) Very informative photo shoot - nice to see the process.

  • 5 minute portrait in 36 minutes, nice! :)

  • I gave the like, there does need to be some direction. In this video she did not get a chance to be candid, She did try and you didn't like it. More of what they would like to try and less of what you think is good. The person will in the end have more time to Shoot with you... Get some good ones get some bad ones. Nice subject, I think she had more to offer but didn't have the chance...

  • God damn. How tall is that monopod Jared? What model?

  • When aperture was used when she was sitting down in the full body shots?

  • @JaredPolin do you think 50mm 1.4 would do better that 35mm?

  • @JaredPolin I have 1 question, what's her email address? =)

  • Excellent work dude.

  • I really waited since I've started photography 1,5 years back for someone to make "live" complete photoshoots videos! Keep it going! This is the best help one could get after he passed the technical and basic stuff!!!

  • Used a step stool today for corporate head shots, thanks to this video. They liked this rather than having me have them bend their knees or kneel down! HA! This was a great tip!

  • @shootdrawpaintread

Couldn't you have had them sit down? Just a idea. ;)

Personally I found such headshots the worst to do, ok it was fun to photograph my colleagues (photography is just a hobby of mine - I'm a social worker), but on the other, a few of them didn't want to have their picture taken and didn't care for my instructions and thus ended up worse on the picture, making them dislike it even more. ;)

It's just so much easier if the people are willing... or have drank a bit. ;)

  • @benjaminvdvyt Right! I found the step stool easier for them feeling comfortable. But you are right, not a lot of CEO's and executives like getting their pic taken. I try to make them laugh and shake it out and they relax a lot more. But then there are some not wanting to laugh or chill out. :) One other tip (that I got off youtube) was to have the person kneel down and THIS WAS NOT comfortable for me or for the business person. The step stool worked much better!

  • SIt! SIT! Yeaaaaa.. sit!

  • That hair takes some serious teasing

  • This is awesome! Once again, I learned a great amount. Thank you for showing us the unedited stuff. Your high ISO throws me off. I learned always shoot at your lowest you can for fear of noise and whatnots....I can't understand why you shoot so high.. I'm sure this has been asked b4. So, it's probably in the forum somewhere and I just need to look for it.

  • @shootdrawpaintread He's shooting with a D3s, you can go to like ISO 1600 without real loss.

The reason why they teach you to use the lowest ISO, is because it is better for noise and contrast and you want to keep a good clean image, however as everyone knows your shots need to be sharp.

I got a bunch of wedding pictures shot at ISO 800 on the D7000, but I did get 1/640 which made the picture really nice and sharp and unless you zoom in at 100%, then you won't notice the ISO at all.

  • @benjaminvdvyt Thank you! I didn't think that was an acceptable "professional" practice. THANK You for your insight! And, now, I know. :) wonderful.

  • @shootdrawpaintread Well what's acceptable of course changes from person to person. With photography it's always the question of what you want to give up for light, flash, iso/asa or aperture. With these high quality ISO's (especially with the D3s), you can keep that aperture and other light how you want it so that it feels that you are not giving anything up.

But still this is all fairly recent and a lot of people still shoot with 1600 ISO bodies that gives you real noise at 400 already.

  • @benjaminvdvyt I am saving up for a Mark II (Canon) I shoot w/ a Canon Rebel xti & I feel out of date, even though the camera is only 3 years old. But now that I'm actually studying photography & making some money off of it, it's time 2 go professional! I'm a teacher, but taking a few years off and have discovered photography as a new passion. FKP's videos are so helpful and I am grateful for your tips too! Just did another shoot & did highter ISO for fast shttr speed. worked AWESOME! THANKS!

  • @shootdrawpaintread Be careful with your ISO though, your camera is not that great with high ISO's. While each sensor is unique, in general a sensor that goes upto 1600 will show real noise at 400, or at least my D3000 did.

Obviously it all depends on what you got to work with for how far you will go, but keep an eye on that. Personally I don't mind going to 800 ISO on my D7000, but that compares to like 200 on my old D3000, so keep an eye on that.

The Mark II is a great camera btw.

  • @benjaminvdvyt Low as you can go! ASA / ISO... In daylight... Nice day light... I'm not going over 200 if I can avoid it... I'd rather shoot at 100 and do light room with RAW. I was a Canon 450D shooter now up to the Canon 60D and working on from there... In the 70's as a kid I was developing my own B/W and color slides at the time. I did mess with Color development but that was a trick back then... $ I tried... Still trying...

  • @gerald2003r Obviously if you have plenty of light then you will stay low, fact is that we all try to stay as low as possible. That said, a couple of years ago ISO 400 would destroy your pricture, these days it doesn't, it is in fact hardly noticeable and since shutter speed is so important, it's better to crank it up a bit, then to get a blurred picture.

  • It was great to see all of the shots. Thanks! :)

  • 28:22 that's my fav.

  • The Camera is not even here, 5 sec. latter he's talking strait at the Camera.

I wish you luck on getting an acting job with these PHOOTOOSSS.

"Do you want to Put it in your Mouth?" That cracked me up.

Thanks for letting us behind the curtain on your shoot.

  • i subscribe :)

  • Hey Jared next time you shooting head shots of women please instruct them to bring their hair back so you can have a clean look of their neck! Instruct them to play around with the hair for a couple of shots!! =)

  • Jared... I know you're not cheating on me!! haha you're such a flirt!

  • Jared, you're very charming. xD

  • i like the ones with the glasses and the neclace, with the glasses on the head, nice all around photo shoot, very nicely done :)

  • My teacher told me a rule, Never hit on your Model, Hmmmm i may try it a different way next time.

  • hahaha @ 31:51....love it!!!

  • LOL @ Instant replay hahahaha

  • 15:45 amazing!

  • hahahaha. i love the instant replay!

  • good job man u really have fun thats the way to shot and shes not hot lol

  • +1 for the FRO!

  • The model has piercing eyes and high check bones which are fantastic for portrait shots. I'm going to try some of your techniques this weekend when I shoot. And yes....I am going to be using the step stool. Great video! Thanks for sharing.

  • Hey Jared,

So I've wondered this for awhile....

Before your photoshoots like this one for example...

Do you plan your shots? or do you just take them as you go?

Because this is what I like to do and I was jw what your opinion was on this

  • @BlahLukas I didnt plan anything, just shot really.

  • This video is great! Thanks for sharing it!!!

  • Kudos to TWO things.

1.She checks you out man! hahaha Someones into ya! hahahaha

2.When she says that's big....."That's What She Said"!

  • hey jared i have doiing photograhy for a little under a month now and all i've been doing are candid shots with the nikon d3000 with the 18-55 lense, but i wanna get into doing portraits so what kind of lense should i invest in first?

  • Jared,

I want to know about the Sigma 30 1.4. Have you use this lens?

  • Jared,

This video is great! Thanks for sharing the entire shoot. I have been learning bunches from all your videos...very inspiring.

Say hi to Lil for me.

    IndianaMatt

    Matthew

  • Is that lens distortion, or is that monopod bending?!

I thought you were taking so many more pictures than 73 (when you mentioned it), I guess you were locking in your camera like 500 times. Glad I'm moving in the right direction--less is more.

  • @sgtjlopez its the fish eye lens on the DX body. I lock in a lot because as I move I want to make sure i re focus. I am all about sharp images.

  • Comment removed

  • Wasn't she, like...cheking him out the whole time? xD

  • 5 min??? seriously? Jared is obviously delaying this on purpose.

SARAH POLIN? now how about that? lol

  • Haha, love the instant replay of the check out.

I think that my favourite of the set was Sarah under the tree in B&W. Nice shots as always, thanks for the guide!

  • Jared this is so great, I can't recall a photographer go into so much time and effort to help other people out, kudos dude :D

  • @j1mf1eld thanks.

  • Her soul seems tortured.

  • Fuck these videos are so great. Thanks Jared!!!

  • Thanks Fro, all your vids are very helpful for A LOT of people.

    Greetings from Brazil!

  • P.s what a player lmao " can i taste that lip gloss....not from the bottle" ^_^

  • @MentalBony it almost never works except when im on a date than there like here taste lol.

  • Hey Jared, could you explain in more detail about what you actually achieve by putting VR to on? thanks in advance :)

  • maroon i shoot raw omg

  • @Xquisitesoul lol,

  • What in the hell?

Was so surprised to see that Jared is terrible at directing people. In the first five minutes he's overly-commanding and very much a smart-ass with the subject. This does nothing but tense her up and makes it harder to relax, and it shows in the photos.

I'm also very surprised to see that he didn't use any off camera flashes- at least one. would've drastically improved the photos.

  • @LuisMayhem17 Meh... both those things are opinions. I think some people actually loosen up more when people joke around and are "jerks" a bit but obviously in good fun.

Also I think off camera lighting can work, but is overused. I think so much can be done with purely natural lighting and you can always (almost always) tell when fill lights/other are used.

  • INSTANT REPLAY! :D:D

  • This is great Jared, by far the most interesting video on here.

    Thanks.

  • i need some headshots

  • Comment removed

  • Whats your setup at the D7000 for recording this video. autofocus? f-stop? it always seem to be sharp even when you're moving? i've got the D3100 and every movie isn't that sharp. btw big thanks for all your videos an tips!!!!! maybe you can do a tutorial how to use a dslr for recording videos?! ;-)

  • nice...lens cost around blablablabla dolla thrown on the grass with monopod cooool

  • what happend to the BW Photo at 25:46 in the Hairs is a dark grey area where there is no detail at all!

  • please do more of these!

  • I hope you boned her, She has a beautiful smile.

  • AMAZING WOMAN! :)) And photos by the way :P

  • Great vid.

I tend to use the (what i call) Robert Mapplethorpe hand movements, which probably are quite usual, theres a great vid of Mapplethorpe directing his models with a quite simple; push with the right, pull with the left palm. and vice versa to rotate.

  • I love that you simply told her "probably not" when she asked for full body shots against the tree. I usually try to oblige the model when they ask for something that I know probably won't work and I usually end up wasting time.
