Great promo. Recall seeing the pilot film as a kid and being creaped out by the weird story. The most ambitious and sci-fi oriented episode by far. Funny to see a crude early version of the iconic opening montage and theme. Note Star Trek sound effect at :55. Zulu as Kono - or is it Kono as Zulu? Oh, I give up.
A Cool CBS Promo & a Memorable Cast for 12 Seasons with The Late Jack Lord ~ R.I.P. as Steve McGarrett against his Arch Enemy, Wo Fat. The Original Hawaii Five-O is one of my All Time Cool Faves. I remember the One Hour Pilot in 1996, produced ' n ' written by The Late Stephen J. Cannell ~ R.I.P. with Gary Busey, Russell Wong & The Late James MacArthur ~ R.I.P. as Hawaii Governor Dan Williams & I'm still watchin' the New Hawaii Five-O, every Monday Night on CBS
The episodes with Wo Fat were some of the best! I wish he had been in more. He was in the excellent season opener for the 9th season then we don't see him again until the final episode of the whole series (season 12) which is to long to go without him. A perfect adversary for McGarrett.
Only 3 billion people on Earth in 1968? Man, that's some increase - we're almost to 7 billion in late 2010, and they're expecting the world to hit that milestone in about one year.
The scenes in this promo are from the two-hour movie that served as the series' pilot, which aired on "THE CBS FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIES" on September 20th, a week before the first hour-long episode aired on Thursday, September 26, 1968. The "guy that looks like 'Odd Job'" is actually Khigh Deigh, who portrayed Steve McGarrett's #1 arch-enemy, "Wo Fat", throughout the series (he was to McGarrett what "Professor Moriarity" was to "Sherlock Holmes").
"Beads of white stuff" - I've always remembered that line.
The initial shows had more edgy relationships between the Five-0 staff, as seen here, although James McArthur wasn't in the pilot ("Cocoon") which comprises most of the footage in this promo.
Note the sound of Starship Enterprise door opening at :53.
Indeed, it wasn't James MacArthur on the pilot. I grew up watching this series, and some of the episodes were unforgettable. My favourite characters were Duke and Ben Kokua.
If most of the footage in this promo came from the pilot episode, wouldn't there have been a different actor playing didn't play Danno in the pilot episode? In this promo they're showing James MacArthur playing Danno but yet in the pilot episode Danno was not played by James MacArthur, instead Danno was played by Tim O'Kelley.
I love this show. Watched it from birth until it was done when I turned 12. I am the first one to head to the store every 6 months when they release the next season.
Veteran radio/TV/movie trailer announcer Art Gilmore is the voice in this promo (he was also appearing on "DRAGNET" several times every season as one of Sgt. Friday's superiors), which was part of the 1968 "Winners Circle" fall preview special CBS sent to its affiliates, featuring individual segments on the new shows that could also be shown in five minute "chunks" as well....
first saw it in nov 1969-on itv friday nights at around 9pm-with parents at home-one of the best at that time-no colour tv then-but still enjoyable-birmingham-uk.
Jack Lord was quite athletic for a 50-year-old guy.

@storrs19 I respectfully disagree. The show was supposed to be a cop show, not Mission Impossible: Homeland Defense edition.

@queefbreeze It certainly does. It's just for people who like gun play and childish bickering. Avoid it like the plague!

@iurisangel40 This is from COCOON the PILOT episode, which is indeed featured on the Season 1 DVD. The whole season is incredible. A must have.

Is it a coincidence but did the original Hawaii Five O air on Sept 20,1968 just like the new version 42 years later on Sept 20, 2010?
Taisho999 1 year ago
@Taisho999 No, they planned it that way.

The shows highlighted in the 6-spot still are, from L to R, top then bottom:
Hawaii 5-0, Lancer, The Doris Day Show
The Good Guys, Blondie, Mayberry R.F.D.

I'm so glad they re-cast Danno after the pilot. Only James MacArthur fits that role :)

Mighty hot & humid in the islands to be running around in a suit & tie, but it fit McGarrett perfectly!

@luangu I can't picture him in anything else! I'm glad they kept the suit-and-tie look.
