the app maybe fun but .. even with four professional musicians, it still sounds awful! I mean the sound recorded or created is out of tune like a car horn. it makes my ears bleed!!
People, obviously it's not going to be like a real instrument, but it was pretty damn good for being on an iPad. For 3$ on the App store it's worth it. It's just for entertainment purposes. They don't think that they can actually join a real Symphonic Orchestra and play with those. So yea, if you don't like the way it sounded, don't spend the 3$, and spend the 500$ on a real violin then and learn something your self.
because its just not the same on an i pad u go drive around in your toy car and ill drive a real one . one it sounds horrible in comparison and two the feel of real strings is so much then again u cant snap them lol and how would u get the iconic guitar smashing at the end of a hard core clip
awesome app... could use better sound but i don't expect it to be perfect the first time anyways lol but i must say it is really cool they can do that with technology though and its only going to get better at the expense of getting our brains turned to brown and pink goo lol...
That's really awesome actually. technology would never be something legit to replace real instruments, but it's actually really awesome you guys put this together. screw the haters- with a capital screw.
This performance was creative, humorous and entertaining. It is both satire and salute. To all those commenting who expected perfection, who caught a few bad notes and want the world to know uh, ??? Don't you wish you had their talent? No, probably not. You should. To the musicians - bravo! Nicely done. You're the kind of people whose company I most enjoy.
And by the way, after that I just had to buy this app. Can't wait to try it. My 9 year old is studying violin (1st year) and this will blow her mind (in a good way). Still smiling on third listen. I'm your latest fan. Looking very much forward to hearing what you can do on the real thing.
@thermalmaximum To me it's depressing, mainly because technology will never replace the real instrument, such as the violin or any musical instrument for that matter. When the musicians faded away with their instruments, it was almost like Steve Jobs fading away from this life.
id also like to add on, that this is innovation at its finest. im so glad i bought an ipad, and even more stoked that i bought the magic fiddle. now i know how to play four instruments. im still learning the cello and viola on the MF. guys, get this app, its HOT.

Story of smule.com on page 114, of Inc. December 2010 I almost dropped the magazine when I read about GE Wang's app for a virtual lighter, because I had the same idea for a virtual lighter. Great minds think alike. (smile)
Are you kidding? I mean... it's a cool app but, come on! These guys can play real instruments but it painfully obvious to any one with an ear that the mechanics of doing this are just messed up enough to have the intonation of this performance as a D minus. If they played this poorly in tune as a traditional string quartet they would sound something like "grade six band". Don't be intoxicated by the instruments: listen to the music.
@rumpusputt The whole point is that making things like this for the iPad is an accomplishment and a move forward for technology. Maybe you should look at that instead of being intoxicated by your own elitism. As a classical musician myself I can appreciate this, so I think you can manage it, too.
Other manufacturer have to think twice why no one use their brand's tablet or game console to play music. So long only Apple and Nintendo can attract people to do this.
They can make an app for a string quartet but i've still yet to find a half playable guitar app. Oh yeah the video.... Pretty damn good. I learnt pachelbels canon when i was 11 and went on to find jerry c's rock version, ant matt rach's. Kick ass tune
Intresting to say the least....The pitchy tones almost are enough to make me turn it off,but alas I congradulate you all on your attempt...All in all I thought it was pretty cool..
That was awesome. A beautiful song done on "Trek tech". How f**king cool is that?! Missed a few, not perfect, but simply emphasizes that it's real. Adding to favorites to enjoy over & over.
The missed notes only proves that the app is real and this video is real and not edited. i think this is much harder to play with because for those who are real musicians it is better to feel the real strings and bow. Great work guys! the performance was not perfect but you deliver it well. Good job!
This is pretty amazing. These four are AMAZING musicians (check out some videos of them performing), so the missed notes are not on them. In fact, they're probably more aware of it than we are. However, they are using COMPUTERS! That's cool.

I didn´t even thought of giving them the chance of blaming a short period of rehearsals for the multiple times they screwed up, I almost immediately thought of a poorly coded app that can not keep the pace with professionals, since they do play instruments for a living, it's difficult they would've make so blatant mistakes in a song this easy (and BTW arbyn, it's the freaking canon in D major from Pachelbel, it is played in each and every wedding around the globe)
That's actually fairly impressive for a piece of software, I'm guessing they didn't have too long to play with it, and even still without the tactile feedback an actual instrument can provide.
