  • Brilliant!!! The resurrection of the word "Prat"

  • Only true DJ's have that Hat.

  • @iArePJ or a jew.

  • People always bug me to play skrillex when I absolutely hate him and don't have any of his records. What do I say?

  • DIDN'T KNOW YOU PLAYED IN R.E.M. (hat joke, if you get it)

  • Good advise.

  • I support 3 year old old ladies who used to be bank managers too ... dude you are chatting bollocks here ..... how can you possibly have a conversation with a drunk while you are mixing ?

  • yeah those people can indeed be a problem! A few weeks ago a friend and myself were spinning DnB back 2 back. Someone came asked some Lady Gaga! I compromised by using some very commercial songs (DnB though) and loose some of the heavier, less vocal, tracks.

  • have you got anything to dance to?

do you have anything by the rizla kicks?...................................my last drunken idiot question

  • indeed, This is LIFE advise

  • you rock!!!! Your advice helped a lot!! thank u so much man!!!

  • this is such good advice , thanks jonathan

  • As always another great video man. Some people like Survivor or whatever current reality nonsense is showing these days, I prefer ellaskins videos. Always a pleasure to watch. Even after being a DJ for a few decades I learn a thing or two from you and always get a healthy laugh.

  • 13 year old drunk kid at a party came bothering for a rap song I didn't have in my playlist so I kinda synced in the song from YouTube from my laptop I had connected to my controller lol

  • This video is so much fun watching with the snow flake feature on

  • LOLOL 4:20

  • like ur views i have been to clubs are parties where no1 is dancing to the dj nd ill go nd get every1 dancing but he will still be playing music people dont realy like nd if i take them a popular tune or cd that will blend in most of time they wont use it nd every1 has shit time until they go to diferent club

  • This guy has strong Kung Fu.

But hey, I cant really feel sorry for any DJ that has to put up with drunks...hell if you dont like drunks you shoudlnt become a DJ should you? Sht thats your main audience right there!

Whats next, police complain about having to deal with robbers...cmon guys...

Every DJ should know how to act around drunks and they should make them happy because thats their main consumer there and if its a club dj then the drunk guy is wasting good money to be there.

  • also you can crab a bat and smash his dirty face ;) :P

  • holy fuck your house is messy :L

  • Strongly agree with you

  • Have you notice everyone wants to be a dj ever since electronic music has gone mainstream

  • @SleepCatSleep Electronic music has been mainstream since the 70's.

  • @SleepCatSleep yet only few have the discipline to keep working at it to actually make it into the club

  • @SleepCatSleep Thing is, those commercial pricks get into Clubs whereas the non Commercial, technically good DJ don't get recognition at all.... The Most Clubs in my town are more a Radio with lighting, than a Club... and I'm standing around being annoyed because the DJ sucks hard!

  • holy shit man your a genius!

  • Get the bouncers, Just joking good upload, topic. If the crowd is going with what ya playing ask the crowd over the mic if thats what they want and get a vote thats democracy. Ask the organiser or host? mabe . Let him know it will effect your set. Your building up to the good stuff. Its alot more simple if your DJing a lot of cds and not mixing i guess. It depends largely on the venue and the and the type of DJ you are. Spike his drink with a rowey. Just some thoughts. Cheers

  • Sounds a lot like dealing with the cock block that everyone on the dance floor is fighting off too! You kick ass man, love your vids!

  • sound advice man

  • are you from cheshire?

  • 4:21 to 4:30 LOOOOOL

  • I'm not even a DJ and I find myself watching you're videos, their very insightful and full of information!

  • Great video, and great advice man!

  • Very diplomatic, great advice!

  • This is probably the best tip (and they all have been good), the best advice ive watched from you. You are a pro. Thanks for your vids!!

  • I find, from my mobile DJing - Drunken girl = speak to them, don't be a charmer - remember they want a request for the girls. Drunken guy = always be polite, shake his hand if you can as you've put him on the same level as you - and try and play his request or "sorry not got that one with me".

Never get into a slanging match (fetch security over) and, if the person gets violent - stop the music, grab your master fader - do something that will make the crowd turn and look at you and help!

  • you have a fuckload of hats. oh and thanks for all the videos :D

  • Be polite and show respect to a certain degree, but don't let them take the piss out of YOU either....It's a fact that nowadays the best way to deal with some people is to stick your fist down their throat.......it's all they understand....NEVER be a doormat....alchohol does not cause ignorance...it amplifies it....twat the cheeky cunt.

  • Is it not possible to hypnotize them!? Seriously though this is great advice, respect people for who they are, I totally agree with that, Jonathon you're a legend!

  • i love Britain slang !

  • Just started out and had this problem a couple of times, I think alot of this is common sense-never piss a drunk off lol

  • you're fucking annoying

  • @Djnova11 no... your the annoying one. Go spread your bitterness elsewhere mate

  • @TheDustinash as if this video isnt bitter enough !

  • and the hoaooah with the vocals lmao

  • cool , you have the same bread machine as i

  • Its very true what you say, even though this isn't the newest of video's, the point is still relevent today, that the happyer you can make "drunk" people feel, the better they enjoy their time, the more they enjoy their time, the less hassle you get. No music will entertain EVERYONE in a room, so its a matter of learning how to cater for the masses while NOT leaving the odd few people out. Music is a great and easy way of doing this, but your voice on the mic can help alot too!

  • So say someone comes up whos not drunk or anything and is just interested in what your doing, asking you about equipment or the songs and not making an idiot about themself, do you find that a nuisance or does it not bother you?

  • last time a guy said can you play some hip hop not that hose crap i said ok what do you wanna hear ?? he: ehm insomnia from faithless !! lol

  • You are a PRO, no more words J.

  • you my friend are switched on

  • Hes just so cool.... xDD

  • dont know who you are, but your a legend.

  • You're like the Yoda of DJs or something.

  • this is so true, cause most of the time, im the drunk prat and the other time im the dj, so much sense in this!

  • very good video even better philosophy

  • Mate seriously love your stuff,

  • good stuff and i agree (not that im a dj) but it would seem a bit more humble if you admitted sometimes we are all that drunk guy rather than the way people put down drunks :)

  • I just realized how messy your kitchen is haha...might not even be you kitchen but it's still pretty messy anyways...either way great incite...

  • yup basiclay your talking about PLUR Peace, Love, Unity & Respect.

thats what i believe aswell between The DJ, The music, and the ppl there.

peace between all, love of music and fun. unity . and respect for all no matter what.

thats like your talking about to me. in a sence of the words, lol

  • If you are playing in a decent enough club or at an event, security won't allow any drunk douchebag, or anyone for that matter, to talk to the DJ, outside of people that the DJ allows.

  • @xxxIronLeexxx that is very true actually. but it highly depends on the city and environment. lucky for me in berlin clubs dont have much security so I have actually been able to hang out with erol alkan, a-trak and boys noize because the security was so loose. often times, ive noticed that the djs are probably drunker than you...haha

  • well said mate

  • Psychologist mode... [On] Off

  • You are the Joe Strummer of DJs! Cheers!!!

  • Love the hat man! I'm a massive fan of your advice!!!

  • Thanks mate... helps alot

  • THX YOUR AWESOME!!! YOU ROCK!!!! YOU ARE LIKE MY HEROE!!!! LIKE THE SONG

IM YOUR BIGEST FAN, I FOLLOW YOU TILL YOU LOVE ME!!! PAPARATZI!

DUED!!! THX FOR ALL !!! DO YOU HAVE ANY EVENTS,, IN AMERICA?

  • Man that helps, Im new to this and the second party ive played at had soooo many of those people. I got so pissed off but it was an okay night. thanks for the tips

  • Amen 2 that ! :)

  • u r totally right oh how i know what u mean !! keep on going with ur good videos and ur good work ;) big hug from portugal

  • Absolutely brilliant advice!

  • Just stay interested for two. maybe 3 sentences and tell him:

'Thats a great song... I'll fit it in as close as possible.'

Keep eye contact after a minute or so.

For the 'want to be ones':

Just give them your (fake) card and tell them to e-mail...

    P.S. I'm practising and you're right! I'm enyoing!!!

  • de-fusion is the key!! your only as good as you last gig if your mobile!! good attitude brings bookings, bookings brings in the bucks. :-)

  • Haha, this reminds me of the situation between Steve angello and Paris hilton @ wmc last year ! The bitch wanted him to play hip-hop and when he refused her boyfriend slapped him. That's when stevies bodyguard beat the shit out of her boyfriend haha lol ! If that ignorant bitch ever came to me asking for hip hop I wouldn't even bother with the psycology and just tell her to f*ck off ! :D

  • I've been djing in an out of strip joints and bars for a while and if its not some drunk stripper coming up and screaming in my face, or some janitor who just got done working out a lashing on his kid or whatever his crap problem is, the job wouldn't be nearly as fun. A considerate (but sarcastic) smile is the best thing you can do to make it even worse, but the joke is all on them. I had to learn fast how to deal with ignorance. The worst though, are the slobbing spitter drunks who never leave!

  • Never trust a man who wears a pinky ring.

  • What bout if I don't the song he or she likes??What should I do then??

  • Comment removed

  • what about when hot girls come on you ?

  • Then you let them cum on you. lol

  • so true lol laughing my ass off because it is all so true.lol.

  • haha I'm sure i've been a Drunk, idiot and prat on nights out.. Shamefull

  • brilliant tip

  • i remember playing some masta ace once and some girl asked me if i've got any girlsaloud. crazy shit, so i said yes and put some gravediggaz on. that got rid of em. hahaha

  • as an aspiring dj this is very good information. i have my decks mixer and pa now all i need is some lights and the little things like what this video describes. thanks for all the information, keep it up.

  • Haha, I remember playing at King's College. I was playing Gangstarr at that point, and some girl came up to me saying: can you play some hiphop&r&b?

    Right, so gangstarr is pop?

  • You are a great phsicologist jajaj!! Very good vid..

  • Wow! This is great advice! At the club where I play, the DJ booth is practically in front of the bar- there is no separation between the DJ and the crowd at all, and I get people hassling me all the time. I had this one drunk chick kept drinking my beer! argh!

This is great for the people who want to talk to you. But what about the people who just want to "be there" crowding in and getting in the way?

  • i only watch ur vids for the hats

  • @ramorisk lmao :D

  • @ramorisk Ellaskins. Never, ever hatless.

  • im 17 and at my first gig i was surrounded by kids at a school dance giving request. so i told somebody to get me a pad and paper and started a request list and told them i would play the songs as they came on the list.........but i lied and people danced anyway

  • rofl

  • haha yeah that allways works, well somethimes they just keep and keep nagging

  • love 4:21

  • Your impression of the drunk describing his favorite music is very funny :) keep up the good work..luv luv luv!!!

  • if you give a drunk the song he/she wants, the person will come back, thinking "ah the dj likes me and my choice of music, he needs my help picking the songs". Happened to me: I played a track for some blonde who kept bugging me about it. The second that song finished, she returned to the DJ booth, holding her cell in her hand, showing me her goddamn mp3 playlist. "Yes, and play this, and this, and this". Thanks, but no thanks.

  • great advice j =]

  • I normally surround my DJ booth with an electronic fence-if that doesn't work, a tazer or pepper spray is the next best thing

  • what about when hot girls come up to you ?lolol/ i lov e thatr

  • You send them to me

  • Lulz.

  • Ive been a salesman for 13 years, and what you have just described is "objection hendeling 101".

    Good shit.

    ps, bouncers are your friends!

  • Bullshit !!!! First i wanna see him doing that while setting up a beatmix right...second if you do it like that, 5 more drunks will step up doing the same fucking thing........so i tell them politely that i will take his request in consideration but to please let me focus on my job here.

  • Lol I was Djing at amy school and this girl kept going mental at me because i didnt have this song it wasnt the sort of song I would have as it was rare and she wouldnt stop touching my mixer so I said ok i have found it so she walked away and I put Slayer - Reagning blood it went down well lol... well 99% of people found it funny

  • In America i could see some drunk guy telling me to play some shitty rap music or pop music XD!

Then its okay to tell em to fuck off right?

  • great stuff

  • dude thats a lifesaver. and a drama releaver

  • there are many good pionts BUT you can't change every single record just because someone wants to change the music. If the crowd watch, they think everybody could make a wishlist! The style of the DJ is gone. That is what i am worried about.

  • Here is what has happened to me. I have had a guy come up to me, I did what you said and then played the song he picked out Then he came up after and knocked my turn table of security came took him off. long story short my sets were over and I had two broken turn tables mixer fuze and fader broke It was a bad night

  • Very very impressed and it all makes sense 8)

  • Nothing better than great advice from a true professional. Thanks ellaskins! Love ya!

  • your an idiot hahaha

  • right on brother. keep preaching the peace

  • THANKS ! J

  • Love your attitude jay... ya spot on m8 ;-)

  • thanks dude! j

  • That happened to me! A drunk guy walked and asked if I had anything that was good. I was playing house music and I asked what did he like instead of house music and he said Toy Dolls- Nellie The Elephant!

  • I said "I loove that track, It's amazing!". He looked suspicious as in "are you taking a piss?" To prove I wasn't, I sarted to sing the "Oooooooooooooooo........." and he started to laugh as hell and then we both started immediately to sing "Nellie The Elephant pack her trunk and said goodbye to the circus! of she road with a trumety trump!trump trump trump!"

  • And he became my friend from the rest of the night loving my house music and dancing during all night, always with his beer (of course) HAHAHA (talking about dèja vu, eh?)

    Cheers! ;)

  • This happened to me J! =P

  • Man. This is great. Totally future notes for me. I am SO not good with dealing with people.

  • DJ, Philosopher and Psychologist ... i love it :)

  • dude i just got into this great art of Djing and i saw all ur videos..great help..thanks!! ur doing a great job keep it up....provide more for rookies for beginners..how to start wat to start with, what u need to be a dj..all this thanks bro! peace...

  • Got one for you. When someone comes up to you and asks for a track you haven't got? Happened to me a few times. I've tried the "Sorry I haven't got that one" and got "You're crap" and I've tried "I've got a set that I'm playing at the moment, but I'll try an squeeze it in later" knowing that the punter's drunk because their breath melts your eyes when they talk to you and you hope they'll forget by the time they've finished their next drink. What's the best excuse?

  • good advice, but do you really have the time to talk to this person? You know, most of the time I spent on beatmixing, adjusting equalizers and scrolling through the tracks...

  • just nod and smile...nod and smile!

  • They're still wasting your time though, right?

  • What about wen thy ask 4 something you know will kill the dancefloor like i was djayin 2 a crowd of like 16 17 18 yr olds and i had them goin to rnb but i knew that oasis would kill the mood wt do i do?Luke

  • check 04: 21 haha LMAO !!!!!

  • DO you get people askin you " have you got a copy of the trk list "

  • to colintraveller, never had that asked, and i have played in Norway and germany .

  • Just curious , How many venues have you played around Uk and outwith ??? .

  • im going to be DJing a pub soon.... THIS IS GOING TO HELP!! lol ive heard storys about drunk people and requuests... thanks alot,

  • what is the difference between a mobile dj and a club dj?

  • A mobile DJ dj while driving around in his car and a club DJ Dj's at clubs...Duhh

  • Nice work Mr. DJ Tutor!

I love your philosophical side of djing too, which is, probably, the more important side of it in the long run.

    ~djvimv

  • That was a nice video, rellay, BUT

What you suppose to say to the same drunk guy that wants to PLAY A RECORD from your consolle? :D

  • my standard response to "play a good record" is now;

    what is your favourite genre?

which artist in that genre do you prefer?

it has an amazing effect :p even though you dont have/dont want to play their song, they still think the dj is on their side, and not an opponent they must bypass to get their song played. brilliant jonathan!

  • That's a very interesting psychology class :P

That's all true, and it's all about Respect.

Vey nice ellaskins, again great job ;)

  • you'r genius man, seriuosly.

  • Totally spot on! 5 stars

  • Exactly (vinda loo usualy)

  • how does a dj deal with a cokehead ?

lol. come on mate jesus you sound like my mother

  • good advice although some drunk people dont wanna talk they have a pre concieved notion and have made there mind up about you without knowing you, no talking to them, unfortunatly.

  • have you seen sean of the dead ,the part where they are throwing records like Frisbees at the zombies ,,,this is what comes to mind for me >:P

  • Hey jonathan, HEEEELPPP !! ... most of the times.. in mobiles.. they get a chair and sit next to the dj booth.. it gets annoying.. Wot should i do then ???

    Pio

  • good advice PS i see your taste in T shirts has improved lol

  • Wow man youre so clever you know everything great job, thanks a lot for helping us....respect the man that lives on the street even..say hello..respect all life.

  • "Even though you might be having a drunk conversation"

    lol

  • Bang on Johnathan. It is always important to relate to the drunk. I almost try to tell them what they want to hear to keep things from escalating. I try to end with a handshake as a sign of understanding and to politely suggest that the conversation is over.

Very important to also watch the patron's drink. Alcohol and gear do not mix

  • Good ideas!

But I'm thinking of another situation: How should I behave if somebody who is drunken succeeds in touching my turntables/mixer and destroys my work?

    Continue? Start again? Quit?

    Thanks

  • That's when you get the bouncer or the manager over. Club/bar owners want you to be able to do your job because it makes them money. If someone's interfering with that, they'll happily toss them out.

  • true class

  • genius, you have advice about everything!

  • Today is the 16th ya muppet

  • Alan Partridge?

  • you forgot to mention some other issues.

In teh club i work at... a few weeks ago, a guy threw a drink at the dj booth... for whatever reason... (probably by accident) but it got all over the mixer and such, you have to make sure to be able with these kinds of situations. Alos have a sheet with paper for sog requests (and or suggestions), so you dont always have to talk to the people when you are mixing (ie "not wasting your time")

    wErd

  • What do you do if you, the DJ, is the one who's drunk & inebriated... ;-P

I think we have all, at one point or another, been in these situations. Drunk or not, its always best to treat others with the same respect you'd expect from them.

  • man, good advice! That applies not just to dj'ing but even live music (band)! Really, if you think about it, anything in life involving those types of people! Thanks!

  • oh, now I know why the DJ was so nice to me last sat D:

  • great video - 1000 stars :D

  • great vid, very informative, but sadly it was ruined, a welsh man in an england shirt, this sickens me lol :p

  • to craigk2000

I know, and the comp for the mixer ends on St Georges Day too.

But when the tenminmix chart goes huge, don't forget the first ever chart went out on Gwyl Dewi Sant

  • What makes you think he's Welsh? Because Dj Tutor lives in Wales, doesn't mean his Welsh. Also, does he sound Welsh to you? Not to me.

  • That could be the next competition question.

Is the DJ tutor really Welsh?

    Clue: what's his second name?

  • Good stuff

This kinda interaction pretty much in any situation doesnt it? Just have to show people, no matter who they are, that you care.

  • thats very true advice. listen to the man!!!

  • I've always believed that Charisma is the mightiest weapon. Cheers.
