Actually the original was known as "Johnny I Hardly knew Ye" and was as a Irish anti-war song. From the early 19th century. Ironic, wouldn't you say?

You should check your facts. Know one actually knows which came first, "Johnny Comes Marching" or "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye". And THIS version is an anti-war song as well. The entire purpose of the song is to hope that our boys come home. As a matter-of-fact, BOTH the Union and the Confederacy sang the song praying that they'd see their families again.
