Okay, this is kind of an exclusive because I usually don't explain why it isn't in color.

The entire series is told from Alex's perspective. Alex is clinically depressed, to the entire world looks bleak and dull to him. The brief glimpses of color in episodes 3, 9, and 12 reflect his feelings at the time. Him and Patrick both have the red stripe to represent how Patrick is the only person who he connects with. And Daniel is green to represent greed.
