When investing in web sites and forums, prepare for worst. Even if you outsource the management of forum soft version updates and backups, be sure to have separate weekly and monthly backups off-site. I know dozen good site where the admins didn't follow this rule and lost everything. Have some old backups too as when the site gets infected, it may take while to detect. Backup with clean scripts is good so you can regularly compare the site code vs backup regularly to detect infections.

thanks for the advice, I'll definitely take it to heart. I'm going to do all this nice and slow and in multiple phases. Hopefully that will prevent a lot of headaches.
