Goth music/Gothic or Goth Metal is always underplayed in the United States. As a long time member of the Goth Culture, I actually prefer that music under the Goth umbrella remain outside of the hegemonic culture, because I believe that 99.9% of the United States are unworthy to hear it and can't appreciate it. I also believe that mainstream music (Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc.) is 100% Bull Shit.

@thenightshroud77 I wouldn't say that. Best Buy carries a massive amount of music that is otherwise Underground and usually a pain to find, just like Amazon. While it would be nice to be able to find music from the Underground more widely distributed, you have to realize the more easy to find a band is, the more mainstream they become. Personally, I would rather they remain Underground for the most part. Too much publicity means a higher risk of being compromised and pressured into changing.

Agreed. You may like earlier Lacuna Coil, Earlier The Gathering. Nightwish started out in the early-mid 90's as well. Evanescence were a lot younger in the teens while this guys were in early 20's but it would have been almost impossible for Evanescence or WT to know about one another. WT was virtually unheard of in the States. And Evanescence were doing demo's. Like I said, just female vox, percussion and guitars.

Amy was still in high school when Within Temptation were touring. WT took some time off because some members wanted to finish school. So WT as a band were around first. But not before Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering. It doesn't matter though, they don't sound the same. Just some female vox. and guitars.

@g0thman No, being able to play the guitar is a skill. Rap is simply ridiculous. Go outside the United States, extreme Western Europe, or those countries under heavy U.S. influence, and you will find Rap/Hip-hop to be virtually non-existant. There is a reason behind this. I've travelled outside the U.S. a few times; I can tell you personally.

No talent, no skill, no sophistication or complex coordination. Nothing. Let's see Akon blast out 255 bpm on a set like Daniel Erlandsson's, or riff like Yngwie Malmstein (I think I butchered his name >.<). Let's see Flo Rida get 20,000 people pumped and ready to mosh like Dez. To me, and most of the world, Rap is useless. Ask any real Metal fan.

But J-Pop is worlds away from what American Pop is (I listen to J-Pop myself when the mood hits me, but it's usually Metal and Industrial and VK for me). Even then, J-Pop is massively popular on a global scale because much of it is in Anime. American Pop and Rap/Hip-hop...only popular in America and Western Europe. Why? Because people need a foot shoved up their asses. Rap sucks. It's pointless. Period.

MTV use to be enjoyable to watch by just about every teen around the world and look at it now.
I don't even know why they persist in continuing to call themselves a Music Television Network when their daily scheduling programs take up most anything except music videos

@thenightshroud77 I wouldn't say that. Best Buy carries a massive amount of music that is otherwise Underground and usually a pain to find, just like Amazon. While it would be nice to be able to find music from the Underground more widely distributed, you have to realize the more easy to find a band is, the more mainstream they become. Personally, I would rather they remain Underground for the most part. Too much publicity means a higher risk of being compromised and pressured into changing.

Agreed. You may like earlier Lacuna Coil, Earlier The Gathering. Nightwish started out in the early-mid 90's as well. Evanescence were a lot younger in the teens while this guys were in early 20's but it would have been almost impossible for Evanescence or WT to know about one another. WT was virtually unheard of in the States. And Evanescence were doing demo's. Like I said, just female vox, percussion and guitars.

OK. Anyone who's saying Evanescence is a WT wannabe, and was formed after them...hmmm...Evanescence was formed in 1995, WT in 1996. Both are amazing, but both are completely different too, Evanescence is Rock, and Within Temptation is gothic rock/symphonic metal! SO stop frickin comparing them!!! It's REALLY annoying.
But thay are both two of my favourites, along with Flyleaf and Paramore<333 :)

Actually before WT, there was Voyage. And as for mainstream success, W.T. was touring and releasing music before Evanescene recorded Origin. Amy was still in high school when Within Temptation were touring. WT took some time off because some members wanted to finish school. So WT as a band were around first. But not before Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering. It doesn't matter though, they don't sound the same. Just some female vox. and guitars.

Something I noticed about this sub-genre of metal is that there is a lack of guitar solos. From Nightwish to Angtoria to Lacuna Coil to Within Temptation...etc. It's not a big deal but why the abandonment of solos?
