So many people here don't respect all the French who died trying to stop an army which was unstoppable at the beginning of the conflict....I am pilot in the French Airforce and I know lots of stories about heroic behaviours of French soldiers who died for their allies..we declared war against Germany even if we knew that our army was inferior due to old strategical and tactical visions....don't forget that we destroyed 1290 German aircrafts and 1158 tanks...We lost 58 829 "coward" soldiers ...

@fab050753 During 1939, The French Forces attacked Germany during the Saar advance. The Germans had no tanks and its main Forces in Poland yet France started to withdraw and go on the defence. The French said it would impossible for the Germans to use Tanks in the Ardennes, Yet their entire force of panzers were able to cross and cut the French main Army & BEF off. Entire French Forces gave up without a fight, Yes they were moslty concripts. At the end of the day, France did not want a fight.

@fab050753 The Leaders of France deserve no respect, The war could have been over 1939, The French Forces could have occupied the Rhine and won the war as heroes. However the French pulled back and went on the defence. The French troops done their duty and most were conripts, However their leaders were cowards and old.

I met DeGaul at Eisenhower;s funeral in 1969 and he didn't even look down while shaking my hand. I ever liked him after that. You are right there are a lot of French heroic behavior, but the same with German soldiers too. It was the Treaty of Versailles (sp.) that caused German anger.

Do you know where I can find the most accurate ( in your opinion ) details on the numbers of French fighter aircraft available in May 1940? There seems to be many variations. Wikipedia has some nice articles. But I don't know if they are accurate.

There were plans of soviet defence in case of a german attack, but soviets had plans for attacking the germans into 1942, when their new tanks, artillery cannons and other weapons were ready. u can understand this if u think about the large number of soviets POW's in the first months of Barbarossa. The leadership of the Soviet Union wasn't blind and they made concrete steps to protect themselves from the expanding Third Reich; what they planned was to make a PREEMPTIVE strike on German troops if the latter would concentrate at the Soviet-German border. This is the only thing we can say for sure.

Defense plans on stretegy,require positions far away from borders, near cities in the heart of the country.The plan was ATTACK.preemptive or not, it was an offensive plan. remember stalingrad.Casualties for defensive Soviets were 45-50.000.The beggining was 300-450.000.numbers speak

I have read more than 40 books about ww2 because i am a scholar.What i have to say is that western propaganda made nazis worse than they were. There were The Big Three, namely The British Empire, United States and Soviet Union. The film footage is fascinating to watch, but the narrators comments at 6:37 are incorrect. The Polish Air Force was not obliterated on the ground. This is German Propaganda Machine at work. The only Polish planes on the ground were trainers and de-commissioned obsolete models. The rest of the fleet was mobilized around the Polish countryside. Its a shame that the Brits at the time believed every word coming out of ugly Nazi mouths.
