My name is Thomas Prescott, I train ITF TKD with 8th Dan master David Thiele in North Tonawanda , NY. At Jong Park Institute. His teacher was (and incidentally still is) Grandmaster Park Jong Soo who still runs his franchised schools throughout the states and beyond, I have been studying over 25 years.. In 200 I believe, our school took a "field trip" to Korea and trained with Grandmaster Choi. I regret deeply that I could not go and meet literally. History. Godspeed Sir.
My name is Chris Davy and I am a TKD martial artist, currently red belt with black stripe. I wish to pay my respects to Major General Choi Hong Hee and thank him for leaving such a wonderful legacy. Rest in Peace and thank you again:)
Saturday I'am going to get my Brown belt. I'am learning under Grand Master Lim Ching Sing (James Lim) He performed Joong-Gun Tul at General Choi's Encyclopedia of Taekwondo in 1984, Santa Barbara California. He also met Chuck Norris :O He is also elected to be the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the International TaeKwon-Do Federation
Call me weird... I'm a kung fu practitioner and have respect for all martial artists. Having seen this man, so sick and yet strong enough to keep on teaching, I gave this video a fist-in-palm salute.
I wish I would met him. He was so great and amazing person. He created us this great martial art and show us good way of life. Rest in Peace GM. Choi.
Yes, the North Koreans practice traditional Taekwondo and are members of one of the three organizations claiming rightful ownership of the ITF logo and legacy. Although it was controversial, he introduced TKD to communist countries such as the Soviet Union, North Korea, and Vietnam in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Regardless of what you think of that decision, General Choi always said that TKD was for everyone regardless of age, gender, race, or nationality.
I'm due to test for my blue belt soon, under Master Ricardo Rodriguez who is Master Ray Rodriguez's brother. I'm still proud of all of my masters though they may not yet be as renowned as Master Choi but i see the same prescence amongst them. I can barely wait to see what heights Taekwondo will take me.
i practiced traditional korean taekwondo and hapgido from grandmaster Soon Phil Hong of Hongs USA Taekwondo in mishawaka, IN. Wish i could of met this grandmaster.
I am an Asst. Instructor with Mid-California Taekwondo (MCTKD) and I wish I hade the chance to meet Grand Master Choi. He is gone, but will not be forgoten!
i remember i met him back when i was a kid he came to ireland and he explained to us that taekwondo is to help develop peace on earth he was a very wise man and to live as long and to be as strong as he was in that age was just great :)
The first time I met General Choi I was also a kid. I believe it was 1979. I was a green belt and he judged a pattern competition in which I performed Won-Hyo. I won second place and when I went up to receive my trophy from the hands of the General, I hesitated to shake his hand. When I looked down, I saw that he'd extended a gnarled hand covered with calluses! In those days he smoked and would put his cigarettes out on his knuckles. Awesome!!
Three brothers taught under General Choi came to Aus and set up Rhee TKD, it's funny to see they are exactly the same... the way they talk, teach and so on. Master Rhee is amazing and now i can see why, he just graded me to my first dan black belt, and it was so rewarding from him!
i meet master choi in 2001 when he came 2 visit ireland and i must say he is a very nice man! and his love for the marshal art is unreal! RIP grandmaster choi hong hi
I joined Phoenix TKD in the mid 90s under the instruction of Mr. Craig Stanley Great Instructor and that is were I met Mr. Tarry Wisniewsky who took me off to the side to teach me my first Kick. I have been out of TKD for a while but I pass your Club Mr. Wis almost every day. Just an FYI Mr Stanley was trained by Mr. Ho who was trained by Gen. Choi TKD changed my life and I that you all and have the greatest respect for Gen Choi
I had the honor to train under Mr. Newcomer for a short while. He is a wonderful instructor and artist! Great job. Thank you for your inspiration and dedication.
I test for my 2nd Dan next month and my Master has trained under the general, and i could listen to all of the lectures My master has heard from General Choi. I wish i could have met him myself.
I am currently beginning to learn Taekwondo with Master Phap Lu at Ottawa, Ontario. It is very exhaustive and demanding but I'm loving every minutes of it. Maybe I just love my Master Lu=))
i wonder what it was like to be in the very presents of the general and to be aproched by him and to be corrected by him. the black belts are so lucky i wish i was there
The General figured out how the human body works. He could be impatient but if you listened and watched, you could learn. The most important thing I learned from General Choi? He understood that physiology varies among individuals so not everyone is going to do TKD techniques exactly the same. He would frequently say, "Something like this..." when he demonstrated techniques. Too many of us get caught up on measuring centimeters when really he just wanted you to understand how to move.
if he knew so much about how the body works why did he introduce the ridiculous notion of the sine wave?Id swear he just did it to be different to wtf and karate.
Did you ever hear him explain sine wave and how it should be applied and why? If you study the principles of sine wave and practice them, you will understand that sine wave is the way that the body works most effectively. We use sine wave everyday, even in walking down the street. If you apply sine wave to TKD techniques, your power will increase dramatically. Breaking will definitely improve.
Often, as far as i know, there aren't many kids (here in norway atleast) who gets the black belt at a very young age. And it is also been made some qualifications you have to be/have for gaining a higher belt and so on. You have to have the same grade for atleast a set period of time before you can go to the next level. It is also set an minimum age limit at this, and when someone are getting 5-6. dan and higher,
General Choi had millions of students world wide. His teachings, in my view were multi- facited and he had so very much to offer. His life was quite a story to tell and his teachings were a good thing. He was a man of much courage. I think a problem occurs in America at times when people really don't know "who's who" in originating Taekwondo. But then how would the average person know any different ? I.T.F. is a military martial art. Very powerful and very convincing.
What an HONOR to be called "first rate" by Dojunim! A great man and martial artist who left behind a great legacy for us all. I wish I could have known him.
A true founder and grandmaster who is not driven by politics, money nor corruption - he train anyway & everywhere. A man who live by his word - listen to his words careful and read his writings throughly, you'll find word of wisdom, essense of knowledge and the secret of TaeKwon Do. Man such of him can't be influence by this worldly things, it's not just skill, power or ability that makes you a good martial artist but also your character, spirit, intergrity and virtue.Something most master lack
I practice GTF taekwondo, GTF = Global Taekwondo Federation. It was founded by Grandmaster Park Jung Tae. We have the 24 ITF patterns, and 6 GTF patterns.
itf is the original ,the difference between it and wtf ,well the main difference would be, in competition sparring.wtf is full contact, where they wear all the body shields and head gear..whereas in itf it is semi contact.and just foot pads and hand pads are required along with groin and gum shields.itf is better for originality in my opinion...wtf focusing mainly on sparring ,not other aspects of the art
If you find yourself wondering what is that sound the black belt is making during his movements in his Tul, he is breathing..! The General pointed out how the "Chi" within us is interfaced using Breath. It genuinely helps get through the entire pattern much more effectively and adds much power..!
it's funny a lot of people quit after they pass white belt...I hope you keep it up and get farther than me(2 tests away from blackbelt, stupid me for quitting)
It is never too late to pick it up again. And I'm certain that any USTF or ITF instructor would honor your rank -- even if you're rusty and out of shape. The beautiful thing about the ITF, USTF, and the General's TKD is that it is a family. You are always welcome home and we are always there for you.
I got to yellow belt years ago and then quit. About a year ago I joined a new club and had to start at white belt again but now I have made it to green stripe and I intend to persevere!
Were you testing for 5th or our just going through patterns? I would promote you. Are those International stripes on sleeve or for 5th Dan? I've seen 4th degrees with sleeve stripes for some International judging certification. Where are you from?
I think I'd been a 5th Dan for about 6-8 months at the time of this course. The General was looking for someone to demo Yon Gae and I jumped up. I was nervous, so I made a goof or two. Yes, those are the shoulder/leg stripes of 4th Dan and above in the ITF. Symbolizes "expert" and above instructor. Sometimes referred to as "international instructor." I am from Denver originally and continue to study under GM Sereff. Currently live in Los Angeles.
Lucky you. I tested at yellow belt or thereabouts and didn't know who he was at the time... 1979-ish... You are truly fortunate to have met and had him critique your pattern.
The first time I met General Choi was also around 1979. It was 1980 and I was a green belt. For whatever reason, he decided to judge a colored belt patterns event that I was in. I was beside myself when he awarded me 2nd place for Won Hyo. What I remember most, however, was going up to him to receive my trophy. As he handed it to me I remember looking at his hand and being shocked, and a little repulsed, by the large number of callouses on every striking tool of his hand.
Once or twice but, as my mother always says, "Newcomers are the first people always welcome everywhere they go." Have you ever been somewhere where the speaker says, "First, we'd like to welcome all of the newcomers"? Anyway, thanks for the compliment. All I see are my mistakes. :-)
Mr. Wiznewski was the other instructor who was lucky enough to be the last of two instructors to receive direct instruction from the General. I don't know if any of his students were there, but I imagine so.
I wish i could have met Grandmaster Choi, I never did as i started Tae Kwon-Do in 2006. Up until that point, i didn't know of his existence. A sad thought for me now as i now cannot imagine my life without Tae Kwon-Do. My eternal appreciation and respect for this man will live with me till the day i die.
I never got to meet the general he is a very good man and i wish i could have its good that he passed the art to his son who i have met i have great respect for both men
yhis man was a great man all though i never meet him his examples and technics that he sharedbto the world will always be in my heart(but he couldn't beat my dad in a saki drinking contest trust me hahahahahah).♥♦♣♠☺☻
El general choi es el creador del taekwondo lastima que por cuestiones politicas el taekwondo se halla dividido en 2.Yo practico el WTF por que es el mas difundido en mi pais, pero me interesaria practicar el ITF para poder comparar y ver cual es el mejor.
Great to see Tae kwon do still strong as ever, I attained my second degree when I was 12 in the uk, after a 19 year break I have just rejoined a local club and loving every minute of it, TKD 4 EVA
Master Harkess doesn't let students go to 2nd degree until they have reached the age of 14 or 15 i think. In honesty no one is ready to be 2nd dan by the age of 12.
might have been different 19 years ago though i dont know, was it even Master Harkess at that point?
I started in the(UKTA)with master Rhee,it then sepearated and the TAGB was formed I passed my black belt@9 and the got 2nd degree @12,the same gradings as seniors,I had to break 2" of breaking board with a kick and alot of the seniors could'nt in TAGB we could not take any other higher grades until 16,thats one of the reasons I left because it was so repetitve,i was in the magazine "combat" which was a maa magazine thats was sold all round the world,:)
no but from the way i was brought up through TKD the ITF has definitive rules that even master harkess would have to follow, he can choose not to test you, but if someone is ready he would have to comply
I met General Choi in 1999 when I used to train at Lee Sukhi TaeKwonDo in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada. He was a nice man who could drink anyone over with Saki (smile with a tear in the eye). It was a great honour!
i just recently obtained my black belt and over my 5 years at tae kwon do it has been the best 5 years of my life

As he handed it to me I remember looking at his hand and being shocked, and a little repulsed, by the large number of callouses on every striking tool of his hand.

You have got to love the irony of one as good as you being called newcomer. No doubt you have heard that more times than you care to remember.
lukeytron 3 years ago
Once or twice but, as my mother always says, "Newcomers are the first people always welcome everywhere they go." Have you ever been somewhere where the speaker says, "First, we'd like to welcome all of the newcomers"? Anyway, thanks for the compliment. All I see are my mistakes. :-)

is anyone here taught by mr. wiznewski???
ryandavis05 3 years ago
Mr. Wiznewski was the other instructor who was lucky enough to be the last of two instructors to receive direct instruction from the General. I don't know if any of his students were there, but I imagine so.

Except for the jumping backside the form was excellent.

TKD is beautiful to watch and a master can put it to good use in an open field of combat; however, it's not a cage fighting style.

El general choi es el creador del taekwondo lastima que por cuestiones politicas el taekwondo se halla dividido en 2.Yo practico el WTF por que es el mas difundido en mi pais, pero me interesaria practicar el ITF para poder comparar y ver cual es el mejor.

slanahesh 4 years ago
no, if yout got the 5th dan you´re a master, if you´ve got the 7th you´re a grand master...
pqftw 3 years ago
No. In the ITF, 7th and 8th Dan are masters and grand master is 9th Dan.

Great to see Tae kwon do still strong as ever, I attained my second degree when I was 12 in the uk, after a 19 year break I have just rejoined a local club and loving every minute of it, TKD 4 EVA
wokothegreat 4 years ago
couldn't have been ITF in the UK
Master Harkess doesn't let students go to 2nd degree until they have reached the age of 14 or 15 i think. In honesty no one is ready to be 2nd dan by the age of 12.
might have been different 19 years ago though i dont know, was it even Master Harkess at that point?
pearsonification 4 years ago
I started in the(UKTA)with master Rhee,it then sepearated and the TAGB was formed I passed my black belt@9 and the got 2nd degree @12,the same gradings as seniors,I had to break 2" of breaking board with a kick and alot of the seniors could'nt in TAGB we could not take any other higher grades until 16,thats one of the reasons I left because it was so repetitve,i was in the magazine "combat" which was a maa magazine thats was sold all round the world,:)

im 12 and im going for second dan on june 15th im in ITF and even in the uk it happens now
TempestWarrior 4 years ago
will your examiner be Master Harkess?
pearsonification 4 years ago
no but from the way i was brought up through TKD the ITF has definitive rules that even master harkess would have to follow, he can choose not to test you, but if someone is ready he would have to comply
TempestWarrior 4 years ago
Master Harkess has prevented someone who i train with who has been first degree since the age of about 11 and is now 14 and very talented.
i don't know though
good luck with your test anyway
pearsonification 4 years ago
well, if thats the way your master works, but my insructor says thats how the ITF works but w/e and thanks

General Choi, RIP. It was my aspiration as a child to meet General Choi and learn from him directly. I never did :-{

I met General Choi in 1999 when I used to train at Lee Sukhi TaeKwonDo in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada. He was a nice man who could drink anyone over with Saki (smile with a tear in the eye). It was a great honour!
