Listening to this song makes me think of my grandmother. When I was a toddler, she would sing me a special lullaby. She sang the song to me again when I was 10-11 years old (having no memory of hearing it before) and it put me in a trance, like hearing the ghost of a memory. My grandmother passed away when I was 13, I'm 28 now and have no idea what that song was. I'd give anything to hear it again.
Can someone please tell me why everyone in the stadium is sleeping. And who the little girl is. I've never seen the show before. So, I don't know what's going on.
@VicMignognaAnimeFan Her name is Key. The people in the stadium collapse after some machine sucked up all of their energy or most of it. She's singing so they can hear her kinda like giving them hope, at the end of the song she returns their energy to them, and finally returns into fully being human (after many years thinking she is a robot for her own safety, hiding the fact she has superpowers). Great anime, watch it o.o
@VicMignognaAnimeFan Not to bring spoilers around, but this series does not shy away from the hard stuff. It deals with the identity of oneself, the question of human evil, friendship, love and the potential cost of it all – packed into a sci-fi anime OVA series of some questionable production quality (animationwise). But once inside the story, everything else goes out the window. If you're easily drawn to drama series that mixes suspense with existential stuff, this may be right up your alley.
Having seen the series when it was released on VHS back in the 90's, I couldn't help thinking prozac would have helped Key a bit more than acquiring thousands of friends.
Did anybody else find this anime extremely disturbing? I'm only on episode 13 (Damn Megavideo only lets you watch 72 minutes at a time) but it's pretty heavy so far...and just when something awful happens you hear those haunting notes for the start of the ending theme and think "It's over already?" =]
@Lina6456 About a girl called Key who is a robot (or is she?) and her grandfather dies. He tells her she needs 30,000 friends to become human so she goes to Tokyo to become an idol ~ It's better than it sounds.
Ever since watching KEY THE METAL IDOL, I have found it impossible to get this strangely foreboding, ineffably haunting, delicately beautiful song out of my heart. Absolute perfection -- five stars and added to favorites. Thank you so much for posting this!
I think the beginning images are more like normal lullaby verses, but as the song progresses, the images become more dark and disturbing. If you watch the anime, I think that my definition makes quite a bit more sense.
03:46 = "When you wake tomorrow, I'll give you.. a carpet of milk vetch and an earring" WTF? It just pauses for a while, there, without explaining what the hell that even has to do with any part of the song! Is it just classically bad subtitling or am I slow? What is an EARRING? Somebody, please explain to me what an earring refers to in this song.

I agree; it makes no sense that your response was down-thumbed to death. Perhaps, rather than asking about the song to better understand it, you would've been better off posting "GOOD SONG LOL" and being done with it.
A lot of the uncommon words are either flowers or birds, I've found. For instance, a goumi is a type of plant which produces berries and a shrike is a type of bird. Make a little more sense now?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This song and the stuff that's going on the clip kinda parody anime; I mean, honestly, the lyrics are stale listings of random animals/insects, and if she wasn't singing it in Japanese you guys wouldn't like it nearly as much.
Whats the story of this anime all about?Im attracted to the title especially the "Metal Idol" phrases and its somewhat very different than I imagine.Anyway the song, for me, is very creepy, lyrically maybe.
It's about a girl named Key,who grew up as a robot in a small village. When her grandpa dies,he tells her that if she made 30,000 friends, she can be human. But there are so many fucking plot twists that can kick the shit out of any of M. Night Shamalyan's films.
It certainly is. You might be put off by the low-budget animation, but the story is amazing. I was a big fan, but unfortauntely the store at which I bought this stuff dissappeared and I've been trying to get the DVD collection.

If you're patient & enjoy being depressed, it might be worth a try.. I couldn't decide whether too much or too little was happening, so I stopped at like episode 13
It is a deep, dark, and dramatic story with lots of plot devices. Key isn't very long, only 13 episodes and 2 episode OAV. I watched it fansubbed like 15 years ago before it was released into North America (which was 1997). I recommend it. If you saw already, hope you enjoyed it.
Wait, so.. that's it? Nothing happens? It seemed like about two dozen plots were sprouting, but now I'm learning that I actually saw the WHOLE darn series?? Are there REALLY only 13 episodes?
no, there are two more episodes (movies) ep. 14 and 15, each over 40 minutes. bute every question get an answer, so there is no point for interprating, thats the only negative in this series.
@MentalSelfMutilation If you haven't seen the two ending "movies", you haven't seen the series. As leon5080 mentions, there are some things that need to be resolved. And they are. For those of you enjoying this song, I recommend that you see the whole series. "Key no Lullaby" will return. I will say no more (but I got goose-bumps and was left sitting in pure awe).
@MentalSelfMutilation I don't know, there are some people who get a kick out of singing about 5 golden rings, 4 colly birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree... A fairly arbitrary listing of random stuff, but hey still have a melodic, rhythmic quality that makes it fun. The fact that it is in Japanese gives the words in the song a musical quality. The equivalent English song about a sugar daddy giving his "baby" all sorts of things. (Hush little baby...)
Don't feel bad Thomas4good Im a guy and I cried a little. Also there is a huge difference between the japanese and english version. The english version lacks the emotional impact the japanese version has. I thought it was quite obvious to a person with emotions.
hey can u put the enlish virson on here too its just as good as the japanese one but some ppl might not understand the japanese one but since i got the full season i know what she sings
the english version makes way more sense but they both still sound beautiful

Key the Metal Idol, old classic, :D
Lullaby is one of the most beautiful songs i've heard in anime.
Took some time to get used to, but the song grew on me.
It's a good show, though i didn't like the ending much. :(

You won't be able to find them on youtube. You'll be lucky if crunchyroll gets it.
Or, you could buy the DVD boxset for $30 for the entire series. It's worth it.

Most all lullabies are silly and make no sense; it's usually not what's said that's important, but does it sound soothing and put the child to sleep.
