Bear seems like a nice guy. But for survival, half the things he tells you to do would probably end up killing you, seriously injuring you, or making you very sick in a situation where even if your perfectly healthy your still in great danger.
It's all entertainment. That's what sells. So Bear is doing his job well. And I admit, I watch his show when I can and find it fairly entertaining.
I think ray's ego was threatened slightly by this guy which explains why ray isn't very nice about him. I like ray but he is more of a tv presenter these days, loves money that's for sure lol.
Bear is still a class act, even after taking so much flak and criticism from people about copying other survival shows, etc.
Great entertainer! I find all the survival shows interesting, even when they're all in the same locations. Even Man VS Wife is entertaining, 'cause you get to see how a woman handles those extreme situations, and some are quite challenging. Also neat to see how 2 people survive together, especially when they are in a relationship.
Ray Mears is Fanatstic and the King of survival but he hasnt been in the SAS , climbed everest,he is not an expert climber or skiier or done alot of the amazing feats Bear has done. So I say they are both great and we can learn alot from both of them. Before we criticise we should think about what they both have achieved and what you have done in your life to compare. Just enjoy them both or switch the channel.
If compare? Ray Mears is great teacher, komplex knowleadge about many aspects of nature, technique, materials, animals, plants, how to process them,where and when to find them. Bear shows how to beat and fight with nature with knife and flint :) and until you learn cliffhanging you are pretty death man :) I cant remember if Ray ever had to climb a tree or steep rock to survive :)
What I hate to hear is how bear sucks and ray is awesome, and that ray is too much of a gentleman to ever be caught up in these wars. Yet if u recall correctly, bear was the one praising ray for his knowledge, and ray was the in calling bear "nothing but a mere boyscout"
i don't understand why the Youtube community feels the need to compare two great people in their own rights. Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, Bear Grylls or Ray Mears. It doesn't have to be a choice does it really!
Bear is such a great human being! No negativity, just here to help people. Others can't handle that,, thats why there so negative about him and try to tear him down.

Bear and Ray are not even in the same category! If you want go camping with proper gear and a camping plan watch Ray. If you want to survive in an unexpected and sudden disaster or getting dumped in the middle of nowhere watch bear! It like comparing a martial arts expert to Boxer! They are both great at what they do.
Ray; Looking for something to eat. Spends majority of time making a spit and making a basting brush so he can make crackling. Food magically appears in place after a cut. Also has a shovel and mat to make a ground oven.
Bear: Looking for something to eat. Spends majority of time finding nutrition of any kind to stay alive, catches and eats. No tools whatsoever.
If I get stuck in and have to survive in the wild, I doubt I'm going to worry about basting and magically have so many tools.

I would like to point out that Bear's programs are based on escape and evasion, he always has an extraction point to get to and therefore takes risks you should never take in a real survival situation. Bushcraft is a much longer term philosophy. Both Ray and Bear have something to teach in the right context but unless you are a downed airforce pilot or a compromised special forces operative I would pay more attention to Ray Mears.

People who claim that the territorial 21 SAS is not the 'real thing' clearly knows nothing, as every soldier in 21 SAS must pass the exact same UKSF training and selection process as 22 SAS, or 'the real SAS'. If Bear had wanted to, he could have gone into 22.
ray mears has skill, and i aint gonna lie i watched ray mears long before i even heard about bear, ray was around first, and ray knows his stuff thats for sure, hes not as "hardcore" as bear, and is more calm about survival, they're both good, but as much as i love Bear i think Ray has more knowledge about survival and more skill, but bear is more extreme survival, like last resort stuff, but i like both of them, they're great.
People just don't get it. Bear's show isn't intended to be a real survival show. It's intended to show you the extreme side of survival. The techniques he uses are all valid, just more of a "last resort". Bear is a badass...whether you believe it or not.

any one actually pay attention? His programe is for what to do in the worst case scenario, he even says that !! So yeah they have to set stuff up, like taking him to specific areas, as for being fake and hollywood set up of course if he's dangling off a cliff the crew are gunnu help him live!
Comparing stuff on Youtube is usualy just idle fun, here it's a serious issue, Bear Grylls shows stuff which could get people killed, which also takes away time from things which could save them. All in all it's bad "survival education", Ray Mears, Survivorman, Dual Survivor, Man Woman Wild are all miles more informative and indicate THINGS YOU CAN PRACTICE TO PREPARE yourself for a situation.

I have nothing against Bear, but I think the reason that Mears doesn't like him is because Bear advertises his show as a survival show, which it isn't. In every episode of his show, Bear takes extraordinary risks, life threatening risks, which is pretty much the opposite of what you should do in a 'survival' situation. Survival is about making it out alive, safely and cautiously, not risking your own life every ten minutes or so. It's irresponsible to make people think otherwise.
@illitterati Bear doesn't advertise it, the BBC do, they simply pay him to do what he was trained to do.. but how the show is edited and marketed, even scripted is not for the most part in Bear's hands.
it's hard to compaire the two because they are so different,Bear is about teching you how to get out of the wilderness alive when you get stranded,where as Ray teaches you how to go and live in the wilderness...
i have great respect for the both of them but i'd have to go with Ray every time..

Well, Mears is about proper survival skills. Textbook techniques, and well honed principles. Bear is a showman. He puts himself into harms way to bring excitement to the show, but people forget that he has a crew there for when things go wrong. He creates dire circumstances to show how to handle emergencies. His skills aren't what Mears' are, but that's not the show he's doing. Straud is on his own out there. If he were to screw up, he could die. Because of that, he takes it easy. True survival.
i think ray doesn't like him because his show is so Hollywoodised or however you spell it.ray prefers to teach people how to be at peace with nature rather than struggle against it.frankly i agree.its like swimming with the current not against it.
Ray Mears is the kind of guy who will appear out of a forest after being lost for 3 months... and will have gained 10 pounds. Unless he met Bear G in there, who would probably kill him and eat his still beating heart. Well one bite of i,t then throw it away and keep running.
i think if it were ray vs bear in a race to survive and escape a harsh environment, bear grylls would be more quicker, rugged and adventurous in surviving but ray mears would be more comfortable. he'd probably build a whole house in the forest and stay there for awhile
My Q, Why is your gerber gear such crap? Actually I find his show relatively entertaining, kinda like watching Anthony Bourdain. Les Stroud I admire more as he shoots it all, and totes a harmonica. I've not watched a lot of Ray's stuff yet but I really dig how they are done, despite him using a film crew...it really lends itself to the way it was and still is done, and he's not hawking any products unlike Stroud or Grylls, least not to my knowledge.
@econnofoot check out his website.. He's got lots of "ray mears" products with his logo on them. That's not necessarily a bad thing but some of the prices are outrageous.
He gives dangerous, misleading advice in his fake Hollywood shows. His survival so called skills are no more than jazzed up stunts that are designed to appeal to an ever increasingly sensation hungry generation.
You could take it easy, save energy and locate and secure sources of water and food first....OR you could throw yourself down a razor sharp waterfall while gobbling moose eyeballs and drinking blood.

@misternylon He shows you and clearly says in every part of his show what to do if you're in a desperate time of survival. That's the reason why he does the things he does in the shows. He's a nice person and calling a respected person who served his country just makes you look like a jealous asshole.

@misternylon You are a right in a sense some of the stuff he does is for hollywood. He does this stuff because its a mentality you pick up in the army when behind enemy lines get as much ground covered these are the scenarios he shows. He drinks blood and eats eyeballs showing you that when you have no equipment you can eat this stuff.

@Gijops Edward 'Bear' Grylls is from a very upper class English background. His father was an officer in the Royal Marine Commandos and a Coservative member of parliament. Bear went to Eton school and Bristol University. At that level of English society it wouldn't actually matter where he was from. His accent would be almost indistinguishable from anyone from such a privilidged background. They all sound the same. It's emblematic of the class system in the UK which is still very much alive.
Not sure why quite so nasty?? Perhaps because a lot of the stuff that Bear tries to pass off as real survival on his show would get people killed. I'm thinking that might have something to do with the "nasty."
As someone who also has more than alittle understanding of wilderness skills needed to make it through an emergency situation, bear should be ashamed of what he's passing off on his show as "survival." I will admit though that the BG compact Scout knife is a good knife. Worth getting.
Seems like he's trying to prove his manhood by eating the parts you wouldn't normally eat off animals. What's the point in that? The last thing I'm going to do is eat the eyeball off of a perfectly good moose, I would rather cut up some steaks. You also won't catch me killing a animal and drinking the blood out of its neck first thing...VERY Dangerous and not advised. Rather stupid some of the things he does.

@AACBrit Good point ! I don't really care for peoples attitude about Bear being a fraud...seems to me he demonstrates, and that's the point. Whether or not he goes through all the steps in reality doesn't mean what he teaches is false.
Well he wasn't a regular soldier was he. He was in 21 Special Air Service Regiment which is a part time territorial army unit. So maybe 20 weekends over his 3 year stint. It's good he done it but he plays it up as if he was in the 'real' SAS.
Mears on the other hand actually taught survival skills to the SAS in the 80's
@iip4radoxii same training and selection process, only their deployment differs. All of them are equally well trained, and Bear even more so in som respects since he was a qualified patrol medic and survival instructor.
If they were both put into a jungle, within 2 days Ray would have a huge treehouse built. He'd even be thinking of knocking up a conservatory while bear still knawed on plants and bugs.

I respect Bear's Special Forces service and his Everest climb, but Bear has been caught several times staying in hotels during the show when was supposed to be spending the night in the wilderness surviving.

TBH ray mears is far worse off then bear surviving in the wild ray makes it seem like u have not a carein the world even though ur trying to do wat ever i neccesary to survive, first off he is fat probably after about 10 mins of excercise needs to set a camp and eat. bear on the other hand goes to any length t show u how to survive and i think ray gets so angry and comes out with stupid remarks like "ur a boy scout" because he knows bear is better and thats why he gets so wound up.
Now, just an observation but with all that survival knowledge surely it would have been better to make fire and cook that reindeers heart long and slow and it would have probably have tasted better. We can all eat raw food so it only takes the ability to keep it down; try eating your own sick because if you chuck you lose if you don't re-consume!
I've never seen Les's show. I think what Ray does is more interesting than what Bear does, I think all of Bear's stunts are kind of ridiculous. On the other hand, Bear could probably do what Ray does with the knowledge and details and stuff, where I'm not sure Ray could do what Bear does with the crazy special forces stunts.
@capnpaco Most of Bear's stunts are staged with a safety crew and often reshot many times until it's perfect. Most folks don't understand that Bear is an entertainer with a military\special forces background as opposed to Mears, who is a lifelong bushcraft and survival expert and enthusiast and was around way before Bear.
number one bear sucks and some things he does hed never do without his camera crew or couldnt do such as catch fish he had to have his camera man do it... number two les goes out with absolutly no one catches and eats his food bear goes back to a hotel and eats there food. I think both are great survivalists but ray mears is one of the best les and ray mears are on a whole diffrent level then bears its like saying a domesticated cat (bear) to a lion les and ray mears
Bear grylls inspired me to do new things like going on adventure hikes in remote parts of the welsh mountains, i was in a wheelchair for 6 years after a really bad car crash and bear grylls has taught not just me but so many other people how to survive in life or death situations, ever since i was able to walk again i do mad things like bear does but not as dangerous as him as i value my life but i have slept in the most horrible places when i have been hiking and wanted to sleep luv this guy!!
Until you get your own show surviving for all to see, I don't think you have the right to call any of these guys "fake". Their money is where their mouth is, where is yours?
Bear has a fun TV show .. And survivor man is cool too .. I just don't like the mindset they spread. That Ray Mears guy has and spreads true knowledge and wisdom. "if your roughing it, your doing it wrong" knowledge is the best tool.
Bear Grylls is a fake. He doesn't do his own cameras... and has "a pot of Tea and crumpets for breakfast" FAKE - Survivorman is the best and real show ever.

ray mears has skill, and i aint gonna lie i watched ray mears long before i even heard about bear, ray was around first, and ray knows his stuff thats for sure, hes not as "hardcore" as bear, and is more calm about survival, they're both good, but as much as i love Bear i think Ray has more knowledge about survival and more skill, but bear is more extreme survival, like last resort stuff, but i like both of them, they're great.

People just don't get it. Bear's show isn't intended to be a real survival show. It's intended to show you the extreme side of survival. The techniques he uses are all valid, just more of a "last resort". Bear is a badass...whether you believe it or not.

Comparing stuff on Youtube is usualy just idle fun, here it's a serious issue, Bear Grylls shows stuff which could get people killed, which also takes away time from things which could save them. All in all it's bad "survival education", Ray Mears, Survivorman, Dual Survivor, Man Woman Wild are all miles more informative and indicate THINGS YOU CAN PRACTICE TO PREPARE yourself for a situation.

I have nothing against Bear, but I think the reason that Mears doesn't like him is because Bear advertises his show as a survival show, which it isn't. In every episode of his show, Bear takes extraordinary risks, life threatening risks, which is pretty much the opposite of what you should do in a 'survival' situation. Survival is about making it out alive, safely and cautiously, not risking your own life every ten minutes or so. It's irresponsible to make people think otherwise.

Well, Mears is about proper survival skills. Textbook techniques, and well honed principles. Bear is a showman. He puts himself into harms way to bring excitement to the show, but people forget that he has a crew there for when things go wrong. He creates dire circumstances to show how to handle emergencies. His skills aren't what Mears' are, but that's not the show he's doing. Straud is on his own out there. If he were to screw up, he could die. Because of that, he takes it easy. True survival.

i think if it were ray vs bear in a race to survive and escape a harsh environment, bear grylls would be more quicker, rugged and adventurous in surviving but ray mears would be more comfortable. he'd probably build a whole house in the forest and stay there for awhile

My Q, Why is your gerber gear such crap? Actually I find his show relatively entertaining, kinda like watching Anthony Bourdain. Les Stroud I admire more as he shoots it all, and totes a harmonica. I've not watched a lot of Ray's stuff yet but I really dig how they are done, despite him using a film crew...it really lends itself to the way it was and still is done, and he's not hawking any products unlike Stroud or Grylls, least not to my knowledge.

You could take it easy, save energy and locate and secure sources of water and food first....OR you could throw yourself down a razor sharp waterfall while gobbling moose eyeballs and drinking blood.

@misternylon You are a right in a sense some of the stuff he does is for hollywood. He does this stuff because its a mentality you pick up in the army when behind enemy lines get as much ground covered these are the scenarios he shows. He drinks blood and eats eyeballs showing you that when you have no equipment you can eat this stuff.
Before you say I'm a 10 year old who knows nothing your wrong I'm 16 and have been to the British army colleges and am joining the royal marine commandos.

@Gijops Edward 'Bear' Grylls is from a very upper class English background. His father was an officer in the Royal Marine Commandos and a Coservative member of parliament. Bear went to Eton school and Bristol University. At that level of English society it wouldn't actually matter where he was from. His accent would be almost indistinguishable from anyone from such a privilidged background. They all sound the same. It's emblematic of the class system in the UK which is still very much alive.

Not sure why quite so nasty?? Perhaps because a lot of the stuff that Bear tries to pass off as real survival on his show would get people killed. I'm thinking that might have something to do with the "nasty."
As someone who also has more than alittle understanding of wilderness skills needed to make it through an emergency situation, bear should be ashamed of what he's passing off on his show as "survival." I will admit though that the BG compact Scout knife is a good knife. Worth getting.

Seems like he's trying to prove his manhood by eating the parts you wouldn't normally eat off animals. What's the point in that? The last thing I'm going to do is eat the eyeball off of a perfectly good moose, I would rather cut up some steaks. Well he wasn't a regular soldier was he. He was in 21 Special Air Service Regiment which is a part time territorial army unit. So maybe 20 weekends over his 3 year stint. It's good he done it but he plays it up as if he was in the 'real' SAS.
Mears on the other hand actually taught survival skills to the SAS in the 80's

I respect Bear's Special Forces service and his Everest climb, but Bear has been caught several times staying in hotels during the show when was supposed to be spending the night in the wilderness surviving.

TBH ray mears is far worse off then bear surviving in the wild ray makes it seem like u have not a carein the world even though ur trying to do wat ever i neccesary to survive, first off he is fat probably after about 10 mins of excercise needs to set a camp and eat. bear on the other hand goes to any length t show u how to survive and i think ray gets so angry and comes out with stupid remarks like "ur a boy scout" because he knows bear is better and thats why he gets so wound up.

Now, just an observation but with all that survival knowledge surely it would have been better to make fire and cook that reindeers heart long and slow and it would have probably have tasted better. We can all eat raw food so it only takes the ability to keep it down; try eating your own sick because if you chuck you lose if you don't re-consume!

They've all manged to entertain, disseminate knowledge and raise awareness for the outdoors.

I've never seen Les's show. I think what Ray does is more interesting than what Bear does, I think all of Bear's stunts are kind of ridiculous. On the other hand, Bear could probably do what Ray does with the knowledge and details and stuff, where I'm not sure Ray could do what Bear does with the crazy special forces stunts.

Most folks don't understand that Bear is an entertainer with a military\special forces background as opposed to Mears, who is a lifelong bushcraft and survival expert and enthusiast and was around way before Bear.

Bear grylls inspired me to do new things like going on adventure hikes in remote parts of the welsh mountains, i was in a wheelchair for 6 years after a really bad car crash and bear grylls has taught not just me but so many other people how to survive in life or death situations, ever since i was able to walk again i do mad things like bear does but not as dangerous as him as i value my life but i have slept in the most horrible places when i have been hiking and wanted to sleep luv this guy!!
