Deutekom just rocks me with that technique of hers. Oh my. My favourite Queen is Damrau - not only becuase of the acting and interpretation, but also because of her crisp coloratura. She`s not neither Deutekom, nor Sutherland, not Serra, but I can`t think of any Queen today with better florid passage in this aria (though Jo is a good rival on this). And though I love psycho queens, the slightly lacrymose sound of Dessay makes me wanna save Pamina myself :D
For this role with the singers mentioned, I would choose Edda Moser, Joan Sutherland and June Anderson. They would fall in the top three, Nateilee Dessay would come next, then Diana Damrau and then the other afterwards
I favour Sutherland above the others, purely on technique and authority, but find Deutekom fascinating and superb. Nothing less than marvellous about them all. But try listening to Gwen Catley, a very old recording in English.
I favour Sutherland above the others, purely on technique and authority, but find Deutekom fascinating and superb. Nothing less than marvellous about them all.
Wow! They are all amazing. This aria is just so incredibly difficult. But listen to Lucia Popp's high notes - such a sweet tone, despite the older recording. Most of them have an element of shrillness on those notes. Sutherland's extraordinary technique is so agile! Again an older recording, but still, seems to be lacking warmth! I take my hat off to them all!
HAHAHA..Actually im not...Sumi is ok...She is singing in the original baroque key, which is a half step lower than what usual orchestra would play...in my opinion, Diana Damrau and Edda Moser and Natalie Dessay are the best, connection, breath, spin...srry....Sumi...sucks
You know, they are all marvelous, but I thikn Damrau is my favorite in the role. She's absolutely psychotic. xD
Sumi Jo has the most angelic tone I've ever heard, Sutherland's skill and agility is unmatched, Dessay is so lovely, is Deutekom is incredibly distinct and interesting, and Moser's F was gorgeous (my favorite F) and the timbre was so bell-like and PERFECT. Just...impreccable selection of sopranos!
comments like yours are what Youtube needs more of. there's so much chaos of people arguing over who the better soprano is...then there's your comment! its completely positive. kudos. =]
These are all wonderful singers, but my physical reaction was dinstinct and instantanious: sumi jo's performance was the only one that gave me goose pimples ;-) She's my favourite.
Sutherland's just way, way, way too fast. Deutekom was staccato on her scales. Sumi Jo was a revelation; she outshone several better-known sopranos. Serra's performance was beautiful.
@dougbalt I like your comments.Take a list of recordings of only about 100 or 200 women who could sing this in the last 200 years. They are all truly gifted.jk when you hear a truly bad version of the Queen, you know it . there are none on this list. There are a few up and coming coloraturas on youtube, that in reality their teachers should not have allowed to be recorded yet.
@HaberfieldChiro Agreed. I've heard some sopranos who have no business singing this role. Thanks for the compliment. Every time I relisten to their recordings, I hear aspects that I didn't notice before. The only soprano missing on this list would probably be Roberta Peters, who sings with a smaller voice, but makes up with it with lots of expressiveness.
Excuse me, but Popp;s F is hardly hit, it is not sustained even a little bit, without vibrato and really really quiet. it is the worst F in the entire video!!!!
Deutekom is the best for the role. I do not have to explain why because her voice demonstrate why others can not challenge her. Perfect voice for the role. Funny thingis that this recoring is little bit odd to compare to mine, which is perfect in every ways. Edda Moser is equaly good. Damrau ? I rather dislike her singing as the queen of the night. Strong voice but not suitable. Older ones are better.
I had never heard the Deutekom in English! Sutherland sang the role only 3 or 4 times and is amazing. Moser was, for the years she sang it, the best Queen in the house I ever heard, although I adore Deutekom's basic tone and brilliance. The yodeled coloratura is, as always, a drawback. Anderson sang the role rarely, and Studer could ONLY sing it in the studio. When she recorded this, she was unable to sing a single Eb in Trav iata--it's a total scam.
I can't really settle on an overall best however, I have broken this section into categores. Best coloratura: Joan Sutherland, Best F6: Dian Damrau. Sumi Jo disappointed me, she did it down a half step! I thought she had a high F?!?! Anywho, the other women were a pleasure to listen to, thanks for the video.
Do remember, pitch was A+415 in Mozart's day, not today's A=440. When we perform this aria in modern pitch, we are forcing the sopranos to sing what would have been a high F# in Mozart's day! About Dessay: 10x better than she is today, but can't you already hear the unsupported, spread, wobbly tone on high Bb, which has now become deplorable.
Sumi Jo's recording here is with period instruments, which are tuned at Mozart's pitch, which is A=430. She has sung it in modern recordings and she does have a high F. My favorite of these is Serra, though Sutherland is insane and Popp has long been one of my preferred singers in this role. The best for me? Roberta Peters on the Karl Böhm recording with Fritz Wunderlich and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
20 years studying Mozart and his music and I have yet to see or hear anyone better than Diana Damrau. There is no one like her. It's not a matter of taste, it's a matter of professional, vocal ability and acting skills. There is no better than Damrau!!
Sutherland is all wrong. The original score was much slower; God even the music can't keep up with her. Popp and Sutherland both do not sustain the "F" long enough. Only Moser and Damrau do this. Deutekom - way too technical; absolutely no emotion in her delivery. Anderson is beautiful, with the exception of the final "F".Studer actually missed a couple notes. Mosuc was all over the place....(horrible).Serra was terrible as an actress. Like a post she was - immovable! Jo is just bad.Damrau wins!
How do you know the tempo from around 1785? Sutherland's version sparkled and dared to be different. Popp sang beautifully, why does the 'F' have to be held? It doesn't say to do that in the score does it? It is good to hear these interpretations.
versions that were just technical spectacles really didnt excite me as much as othrs who seemed liked they were acting the part more(Damrau, Dessay, Mosuc,) moved me I and I generally liked them better though the brilliance in Popps voice in my opinion cant be denied. Sutherland wanted her own tempo... good for her in a way. The others seemed a bit mechanical
since when did sutherland do a queen? this was awesome to listen to...she is the reigning queen of all coloratura so she deserves this title as well. LOVE HER!!!
That might be explained by the fact that she and Östman are doing a HIP (Historically Informed Performance), where concert A = 415 (or thereabouts) instead of today's 440.
I love Sutherland.. I always love Sutherland. The fast tempo is great. However, my favorite is Cristina Deutekom.. It almost sounds as if it not a human.. I find it really fascinating!
Kaixo, la mejor Cristina Deutekom por amplio margen. Es una voz alucinante. La encuentro fuera de lo común y las otras son comunes. Un saludo desde el País Vasco.
@Santoshalfling Not "another tune"--for your information, that's the original Baroque tuning, which is slightly lower (as it was in Mozart's day). Sumi Jo does a fabulous job!
From this selection Edda Moser caught my atention, however Gruberova is missing, she sings an incredible Queen Of The Night. Next to Gruberova I like a lot Sutherland's.
From a technical point of view, the most perfect version vocally is Sutherland's (the tempo is maybe a bit too fast, but even at that speed she manages to perform everything perfectly). Others portray the Queen of the Night better, but with a few faults; Sutherland here is vocally impeccable (which is not the case in some other roles that she recorded and/or performed).
If the Catholics believe to the dogma of Pope's infallibility... Damrau fans have to believe in the dogma of Lilith infallibility XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
