This movie is about submarines! The music honors all those brave souls that ever went to sea in those Iron coffins, courage to serve in the Silent Service! Past Present Future!
war sounds good on paper but never is. It is mankind's most tragic flaw, and should never be considered as an acceptable option. We as a people have the capability to coexist wonderfully on this planet and should not kill each other. War ALWAYS look glorious until it reaches your doorstep.
the men and women who not only served in WW2 but were part of it, the people who were in the midst of it, are to this day considered to be the greatest generation, for what they sacrificed and what they endured, to ensure that something as destructive and tragic as a world war never happens again.
I am English, but I've loved this film ever since I first saw it. Alright, so there's inaccuracies, historically because the US didn't capture the first Enigma machine, but that's Hollywood, you've got to look at this film as fiction. Even the fantastic film Das Boot had historical inaccuracies, but it doesn't stop a film from being enjoyable. I look at this film as a testiment to all who serve in the armed forces and it honours those who never made it back to shore.
i think the americans take more credit than others but we all know just how much it took to give us freedom so lets rejoice our boys and girls for their bravery ppl. hand on heart and lets pray for them all god speed brothers and sisters.
I'ld say that U571 is a good film even if the producers seems to have "transformed" the real history. In fact, the Brits did really capture the german code machine. It is sad because it make the film appear as a glorization only of the American sailors. Maybe, the film is made to honor the courage of those who sacrified from a more general point of view.
Anyway, the interior scenes are quite realistic, the actors are good and I love the scene where the 2 torpedos scrape against the U571 !
I have realized a long long time ago that American made world war 2 movies are crap. They glorify a conflict that was the bloodiest in the history of the world and make them in a way that makes us feel good. Foreign made movies about world war 2 are the best because they don't glorify it and show it for what it really was, something very bloody and horribly cruel.
Either not too bright, or simply ignorant. Americans don't make films to "glorify" what happened. These movies are made to HONOR those who sacrificed more than you probably ever would or could imagine...... We honor those by remembering -in any way possible- those who gave all to ensure freedom prevailed around the world.
Those men deserve every ounce of glory and honor we have to give them. They were truly a great generation...... those fighting now deserve the same. Grow up, son.
Lol. They honor the people by fabricating the events? Hollywood will change events in the movies and do it in a way that they actually do a dishonor to those if they feel it will draw them a better crowd and get better ratings on the movie. The only world war 2 movies that I have seen that actually do an honor and not fuck things up from Hollywood trying too hard to make a hit were Valkyrie and The Great Raid in which events were changed or spiced up.
U-96 (das boot) has a realistic story, better actors, better music, ...
only the special effects in U-571 are better, but nobody should be suprised about that (check the budget and the technical possibilities of both movies)
Both are good movies man. But Das Boot is more realistic. I read a book on U-Boat life and in U571, its glorified. In Das Boot, it is waaayyyy more realistic. Das Boot takes my vote , but U571 is awesome too.
yes he is there oppressing people for a government corrupted !! maybe he believes in his mission but the world is tired of the violence and of the wars and usa doesn't learn from his history!! freedom for iraq and afghanistan

Especially the character developement and the intelligent dialogues added to the "quality" of this movie, right? :)
Or was it the live boat shooting scene?
Or when the black US sailor talked to the German POW as if the USA of the 40´s wasn´t pretty racist itself? Or was it the generating of the impression that the USA caught the important Enigmas for the decoding of the enigma code? Or is a measure for the movie-quality how many worn out chlichees the director is able to cramp into the movie?
When the USA cought it´s own Enigma they were allready sold on car-boot-sales.That the movie mentiones the real facts in a few lines in the credits is a bankrupt declaration.... after generating in the whole movie the impression in the audience that the USA caught the important Enigma for the decoding of the Enigma code. Everbody knows, that teenagers are reading all those end-credits of such a movie, right? Many youngsters left the cinema with many new ideas about their country and the Germans.
Typical for the whole movie U571 was the clean and polished party at the beginning. Where the sailors of Das Boot partied rough, gritty and dirty like sailors far from home do it when they know they could die the next day......U571 delivered a clean party like parents amongst the audience want to see it if their children are watching the movie, too.
The hillarious history falsification is such a bogus. The Brits cought the important Enigmas and developed the computer for decoding the Enigma.

U-571 displayed something that alot of movies don't: the bravery and heroics of real people, just like you and me. They weren't young holoywood celebritys, they were real people.
Let me guess: You´ve never watched Das Boot, right?
U 571 was a bad movie on so many levels.
The bad copied scenes and even whole copied sentences from Das Boot, the clichee overkill, the cheap demonization of the Germans, the cringe-worthy dialogues, the overblown and corny background score, the absolute lack of realism and the hillarious history falsification.
You mentioned the words "real people" in the same line with "U-571". That is a joke in itself.
Is the BAD done copying of whole Das Boot scenes and dialogues neccessary to generate patriotic feelings inside you, NewFrontiers01?
Do you hear this funny sound?
Those are all the US submariners of WWII who are rotating with high rpm´s in their graves because you just claimed, that this hillarious stupid movie HONOURED them.
I would say: This movie is an offence to every US submariner in general.

Look, I enjoyed it as a movie and for the idea behind it. That, in the military, sometimes you have to make tough decisions for the good of your country. Thats what I took from it. You don't to enjoy, but I did and took away a truth. So don't try to shove your opinion about the movie down my throat. You have your opinion and I have mine.
If expressing my opinion about this movie is a "shoving it down your throat" in your opinion.....
The Idea behind THIS movie is making money with exploiting in a chap manner prejudices about Germans and generating with cringeworthy hero dialogues and history falsification and stupid clichees a low-level-patriotism for not very educated people.
This movie has NO idealistic idea behind it.
If it WOULD have this by you mentioned idea, then it would show GOOD ACTED REAL hero deeds of US sailors.
you must also hate "300", while you're at it just because of all the special effects with the creatures and stuff. or let's say that maybe you hated "titanic" because no such thing ever took place between a couple... i can ramble on about HISTORICAL FICTION MOVIES!!!
The events of WWII are still touching and influencing massive the life and thinking of the people today.
Describing Germans as lifeboat shooters and stealing the WWII archievements of other nations...to let the own nation appear as universal perfect with this falsificated history...is something else as watching "300" or "Titanic".
Remarkable, that you didn´t came to this conclusions on your own, h2opolodan11.
You are definately belonging to the target audience of movies like U-571.
I'm well aware that the events of this movie didn't happen, thank you very much but I'm just a fan of it all the same. Another WWII movie I like is "battle of the bulge" but I know well enough that that is not true either. As for 300, they completely left out many other Greeks who fought in it as well. Yeah there was that team that retreated, but even Athenians have helped too (only to be referred as to "boy-lovers"in the movie).
@NewFrontiers01 Well, maybe a lot of people are shocked by the fact that the producers of U571 choosed Amercian Sailors instead of British sailors as heroes in the film. From an historical point of view, the British did far more than American in the capture of Enigma. Maybe you remember there is a passage at the end and you can see that. I don't think it's against Americans in particular, because there where also true heroes in the American Navy and not only brillant officers as Nimitz.
Das Boot introduced the people onboard...in the mini-series and in the directors cut. That had the effect that you are feeling like a part of the crew.
U-571 does nothing in that direction.
U 571 makes one only swearing at the screen.
Only a few of the dozens of unrealistic and cheap scenes in U571: Underwatershot at the destroyer. 40 Germans were neccessary to handle the sub: The few US sailors did the same at once....AND were able to repair the sub without beeing able to read German. Yawn!
This movie is about submarines! The music honors all those brave souls that ever went to sea in those Iron coffins, courage to serve in the Silent Service! Past Present Future!

Because it is a bad done movie.
Because it´s a horrible unrealistic movie.
Because it´s the most ridiculous history falsification of a modern war movie.
Because the patriotism in this movie is so very bad acted that I was yawning all the time.
There MUST be a way to be patriotic AND to recognize how bad done and acted this movie was.
There MUST be a way to be patriotic WITHOUT the need of childrens-cartoon villains or demonized foreigners.
