When you pick a string with a plectrum, 95% of the sound is the string itself, whereas playing with your fingers most of tone is absorbed by your fingers. And good luck getting a cheap bass like that cutting through a mix and sounding good when playing a heavy metal song with loud, distorted guitars and drums such as this when playing fignerstyle.

@Remnufacture Not really. It's common practice to use a pick in metal, because it gives it more attack. Playing with your fingers will give it a smoother tone. If just depends on the tone you're going for, but most of the heavier bands play with picks, not because they can't play it with their fingers, but because the bass sits with the guitars nicer in aggressive music, where the pick attack is desirable.

Alternatively, you could just jack up the Mids, a bit of Treble and roll off a bit of Bass on your amp and you can get a pretty close pickstyle tone with fingers. Still, its arguably more viable to use a pick if you're doing a lot of palm-mute riffing like in this kind of music.
