  • The reporter is a cutie (;

  • she said hudson river its the east river

  • why not put a metal cage around the turbine head? doesnt that make sense?

  • It probably takes a million times the amount of energy they would produce to build the fucking turbines in the first place.

  • @superwowie111 Eventually, we will use energy like this to build turbines, windmills, and solar panels. Use your mind a little bit more. We either get started now, or we pay for it later.

  • @JeffreyOKay

So it takes the energy of 10 turbines to built 1, and through that we will make more energy.... Do you get it? or do you want to 'use your mind a little bit more'?

Go hug another tree and eat your tofu fag.

  • @superwowie111 Lets see dumbass. You store energy, so you could do it all with one turbine. I'm not even one of those hippie freaks. You don't get it 'cause you're a small IQ dick. We need a war to rid people like you.

  • @JeffreyOKay

    yeah but you're gay

  • @superwowie111 LOL, calling someone gay just makes you sound like a small, uneducated American. Worst insult ever.

  • @JasonGorr

probably said that coz ya gay

  • @superwowie111 I said it because I'm Canadian and know not to hate people for who they are.

  • @JasonGorr

    nah ur gay

  • @superwowie111 It's unfortunate you've been raised in such a negative and hostile environment. Good luck with life, I really do hope you leave your small mind to see the world.

I know you're from Australia, but you sounds like an American.

  • @JasonGorr

    but y umad tho?

  • @superwowie111 I'm not mad. I just though you should understand that calling someone gay as an insult, only makes you look small an uneducated.

  • @JasonGorr

    yeah umad

  • @superwowie111 alright, I don't think this is going anywhere.

  • @JasonGorr

I know. I can't talk to you in this state, you have to calm down and stop being so mad.

  • @superwowie111 lol. You're not getting me upset.

  • @JasonGorr

I know ur mad just admit it.

  • @superwowie111 I don't think I'm getting as angry a an Australian would. This is going to go on for weeks isn't it?

  • @JasonGorr

    racist

  • @superwowie111 lol, I never mentioned your race... are you sure you're not American?

  • @JasonGorr

look i just finished a four HOUR shift i dont need to take this shit

  • @superwowie111 LMAO WTF!

  • Get one humongous water tank. Fix it to the sea bed. At high tide it is allowed to fill, after low tide is achieved, release the captured water to drive water impellors.

    hey presto.. FREE ENERGY.

My patent by the way. LOL

  • @eckyspondoolie it's called barrage, and they use it at the seasides(eg Netherlands)

  • @Blockygraphics He he, that isnt entirly true. If you use nuclear power then yes, but once these projects get on the ground and innovation makes them more efficient they would eventually improve.

  • @Blockygraphics yes they do but eventually it is better en much more cheaper

  • shes what i need, a green hot chick

  • k so everyone is saying something on this video that important so time to say a huge waste one time

she's on a boat but where the fucks t-pain

  • why is media using indians as a marketing ploy for minorities??

  • isn't this a market deploy to make some white guy look goood???

  • the lights dont ""flickr"" because of energy the scource :P

  • nuclear energy. period.

  • amazing video..

  • how many turbines?

  • Watch the damn video. It talks about it. Idiot.

  • Wow way to be a bitch over an educational video.

  • you guys understand that one of those turbines probably cost like 1 million each to build. I'm pretty positive that the turbines are there for research purposes then an actual energy source. It's just a test run. I'm really curious how much energy you can get from the rivers current.

  • yo i was suppose to swim against my friend there next year!!!

  • Great ideas and devekopments.Strongly believe that our resources and energy should be initially focused on lessening the toxicity that is entering our oceans and food chain through plastics and chemicals

  • very cool technology, a cute host doesnt hurt either...

  • Some of you guys really need to look up a few things. Here is a list to start out with: Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation, Down Syndrome, Conservation of Momentum, Conservation of Energy (two very different things)

  • Love the scene at 0:11 where an industrial area is shown to suggest that warming is caused by pollution. Funny thing is, the "smoke" shown is actually harmless steam and the stacks in the background have zero discharge.

The U.S. has the least pollutants for its level of industrialization but is seen [by Americans] as the worst polluter of the world. You should visit another industrialized part of the world where they've never even heard of EPA.

  • ill say 1 thing CARS! :p

  • I'll say another thing. Mexico.

Have you been there? Have you ever put PetroMex gas in your car? Do you know how dirty their primary source of gas is and how dirty the emissions are?

Like I said, go to different parts of the world before complaining about America.

  • free green electricity from wind tide and turbines have been around for a long time! my dad had one wind turbine from a truck alternater! for the home lighting no bills no cables crossing the countryside no polloution!

  • Could they make the buoys any smaller?

Maybe paint them dark green with white stripes so as to alert the passing ships with more clarity?

    Fucking rediculious!

Why don't they just import some german mines. Ya know just to make sure the ship capitains know exactly where the tubines are, as their ships are sinking.

I bet that "Amanda" slut has quite a turbine down below. How much cum do ya think she had to gargle just to get the interview?

    Like most women on TV.

    Fucking gallons!

  • lololol1!!

  • not bad at all, maybe it could harm fishes but it is less fatal compared to continuing use of gases, coals, petroleum, and anything that could pollute the environment....we must put in our minds that everything that we do have advantages and disadvantages, and we need to sacrifice something in order to succeed....

and on this project i think they have minimize the risk as possible, while maximizing the benefits...

  • wow a sido de verdad no pense que existieran estos animales

  • Did she die?

  • Use the internet as an "oppertunity" to get a tune-up on your spelling.

  • FUCK FISH we are human and we have fish farms so we can eat

  • FUCK YEAH AMEN!!!!!

  • lol you say fuck then u say amen XD

  • You realize that the point they are trying to make is that these turbines can cause more pollution than they would be saving by killing fish? There is more than one way to pollute our planet and most importantly our water ways.

  • god if u wana now wats under get a fucking dive suit

  • I excited for this

  • @ lordD14 Yea i was being facetious. Comment was directed at velveetaslingshot about not consuming so damn much; it's easy to be self righteous and tell others to use less

  • she's hot

  • couldnt agree more lol

  • imagine scuba diving around there=P

  • the host girl is fineeeee

  • sweden allredy has this shit

  • That's precisely what I thought while watching this program, to put a cage around the turbine with specific size openings to protect the wiled life. However the cage around will probably affect the turbines work also the cages them selves will require additional maintenance.

  • things floating downriver would get stuck around the cage and be more of a hazard than the accual blades

  • Nice work!

  • why not put a cage around it? water goes through... and any type of fish that's big enough to be damaged (enough drag not to be moved as a unit when hit)... doesnt. What do you think?

Also. the energy taken out of the river... might increase the ammount of sediment deposited... it will also make dredging interesting. Does the Hudson have commercial shipping?

  • they shouldn't be a hazard to fish, its not like the blades a spinning at 10,000 rpm; think of a wind turbine in a 5mph breeze, the blades rotate pretty slowly

  • why not put a cage around it? water goes through... any type of fish... doesnt. What do you think?

  • people seem to keep inventing more things to balance out the other inventions. not littering and not using as much electricity and riding a bike rather than driving a car would help allot. if everyone pitched in to help it would make a big difference.

  • No kidding!!! Instead of finding cleaner ways to feed are greedy behaviour, why not ask ourselves why we have to consume so damn much in the first place!!!

Want to stop the corporations??? STOP BUYING THE SHIT THEY SELL THAT YOU DONT NEED!!!

  • Ok you first. Turn off your computer, it's a waste of electricity.

  • Your mom wastes electricity.

  • VERY COOL! GREAT VID! GREAT INFO!

  • if 1 turbine gets loose..it could drag all the others down with it.

  • no, i think it would sink, and drop a few feet from where it was posted, they are made out of metal, and metal doesn't float, so it couldn't get carried a very long distance until gravity got it stuck in the silt and mud.

  • hey news flash they are in the seafloor bed!!!!

    listen to the damn program

  • wait, what are you going on about??

  • We have that in France for now 40 years "usine maeromotrice de la Rance", that's a disater......

  • that is like the best thing for huans so far but that would change whenthy go out on the ocean then they pates would ove a bit move the waves then the tubines would go out then we would have no power

  • I like it, looks lke a door to bigger and better things.

  • Comment removed

  • couldn't have said it better myself

  • she's ON A BOAT!

  • wow, that's impressive

You can power a whole supermarket with a million and a half turbines

  • six turbines, and they're not meant to be a replacement for fossil fuels, just an alternative to help reduce our dependency.

  • Does anybody know how many blades it takes to power that huge facility? I wonder how many it would take to power Manhattan. Also I wonder how much it costs per blade. Certainly the price would come down if they were mass produced around the world. This is exciting stuff.

  • This is actually CURRENT power. This is the EAST River not Hudson. No electricity developed at slack tide when ther is no current. No comparison with fossil fuel power development in cost or output .

  • Comment removed

  • That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard?

He had valid comments (perhaps needs more context to color it, but valid)

  • youre full of shit. you definitely do not know what youre talking about. check your facts

  • Of course it doesn't compare! They are trying to ease us off of our fossil fuel dependency by developing many sources of alternative power. This includes tidal power among other such as solar, wind and geothermal. This is a step, you need to understand that. You also need to understand that fossil fuels are destroying our planet.

  • "This is a step, you need to understand that. "... people need to stop being so short term oriented and realize that this is just the begining of things. This will be improved upon... do people really expect us to be experts at converting tidal power?

  • yer but if the americans aint done it then its not a world first :P like hybrid cars :P

  • yes but if the americans havent dont it , then its a world first :P like hybrid cars ;) they were a yank invention too lol

  • maybe u dont know anything about energy problems of earth..

  • lol i was being sarcrastic, but you cant tell in text.

  • o.0...i am sry then ^^

  • Comment removed

  • Wow good job, you just stereotyped amercians, you're soo coool...dont blame anything on anyone, it's all of our faults.

  • LOL... The host is hot, but I am really getting sick of this whole "damaging the planet" thing. The earth has been through MUCH, MUCH worse than what we have ever done to it. And we are just fine...

The Global Warming movement is a political ponzi scheme, and nothing more. They tell you it is the truth, but the evidence suggests the opposite. Renewable energy is a great idea... but in the meantime, the LEAST of our worries is destroying the planet with CO2. We'll kill each other first.

  • Ok. I like the whole politics thing. probably true. on the other hand my user friend above must be...well as old as a fossil to be able to state the earth has seen much much worse. On the other hand one might look at the multitiude of specieis that have become extinct from human interference in there environments and habitats and at the least one can say we sure as hell are good at screwin tons of things up...why should the envrionment be any different.

  • I agree, but I am just saying I don't like politics involved. Certain high-profile liberals like Al Gore have glamorized things way too far, using incorrect data. There is a middle-ground.

One example could be the "dust-bowl" od the 1930's, when the entire Midwest food supply was killed by a drought that lasted a decade, with temps 7+ degrees hotter than they are now. Another example would be the dinosaurs... the meteor that struck the Yucatan destroyed our atmosphere, but Earth healed.

  • And BTW, the user friend above you is not as old as a fossil... I am 28. I just happen to be educated in our climate, and I have access to all of our recorded climate data and specific testing for the last 40 years. I can tell you this, what the media tells you and what the scientists in the lab and the field tell you are often two different things.

Like I said, going green and renewable energy is a great thing, and I am all for it. But at the same time, it is not an impending doom either.

  • what a retardet thing to say !!

it took earth billions of year to "produce" the oil we are using today.. do you think that the process will just speed up because of our use?

  • what a RETARDET thing to say?

  • awesome, people should find/invent more environment friendly energy sources or pretty soon we'll be running out. be concious on whats happening around us people.

  • this is not the first time its been done in the world.

its been done in England and in china already, and its planned in germany and france.

  • t5utr

  • i think this is really brilliant, never thought of its underwater current nice

  • bypass?? friendly???

  • What about the energy used to creat the fans??? Doesn't this affect the environment??

  • what about the energy that everybody is using to comment this in his pc's?

    or

what about the energy that the camera used to charge to then record the event...

or what about the energy that they used to upload the video...

or what about the fuel they used to get there,, and then go the office..

    huh?

    what about the energy?

  • STUPID!!

  • r u ok? LoL! stupid people like u have no concerns about the environment.....

  • its not lost, or destroyed...

    whats your point?

  • The blades are angled such that the current of the moving water causes them to rotate. The rotation then in turn is used to create the flow of electrons within the "motor" part of the turbines, thus producing electricity.

Please guys, google this kind of stuff. You would be surprised how much you can learn and thats the first step towards sustainability.

  • no shit sherlok hlmes like we couldnt find that out

  • Perpetual motion machines can only work perpetually if they deliver no energy to their surroundings. If such machines produce more energy than is put into them, they must lose mass and thus eventually disappear over perpetual time, and are therefore impossible.

Just kidding, FYI. I know these aren't considered perpetual motion devices...but I thought it was funny anyway.

  • it takes energy to make energy....energy conversion

  • The law of conservation of energy states that the total amount of energy in an isolated system remains constant. A consequence of this law is that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Because energy is associated with mass in the Einstein's theory of relativity, the conservation of mass in isolated systems (that is, the mass of a system cannot change, so long as energy is not permitted to enter or leave the system).

  • flagship21, I thought the same thing.

  • Sad thing is they have been doing this in Italy and Spain for some time now

  • LOL @ THIS. What spin. Honestly, you noticed that the supermarket looked different? The lights didn't flicker? The food was frozen? I have never been into any supermarket that has had those problems. The concept is cool, but don't try to link it with better quality food and lighting.

  • @Marspyramids

-She meant that the quality of power was unaffected by the fact that its not power-plant supplied. The common argument against renewable sources is that its inconsistent (sun not 24/7, wind not always blowing, etc)

  • What if the fans change the currents?

  • It can't, they are turned by the current which means they couldn't possibly turn faster then the current allows. For what you suggest to happen the fans would have to turn faster then the current allows...since the current directly impacts the turbine the turbine cannot directly impact the current.

  • The fans do change the current slightly -- they slow it down.

You can't get something from nothing. The fans are converting the kinetic energy in the water into electrical energy. To do so requires reducing the kinetic energy left in the water.

However, the amount of energy conversion we're talking about is paltry compared to the total energy in the river. That's a LOT of water flowing at 5 MPH after all.

  • Just a hunch buuuuttttttt. . . .Im gonna have to say the moon's momentum about the Earth is probably not going to be affected by a few turbines. Its pretty much the same effect as rocks in the way of the water.

  • I live in Minnesota. In Minnesota, the water in rivers flows due to gravity. I don't know which rivers in New York flow due to gravity vs. those that might flow due to tidal forces.

In any case, it doesn't matter -- there is plenty of energy available in that river.

  • I couldn't find it on line, but it was in a magazine called IEEE Spectrum. It's a magazine for engineers.

  • the decaying of the blue paint could pollute the water.

  • you're so stupid and not funny!

  • Comment removed

  • creative and nice, now we only need panels in outer space itself to collect those rays and waves, woohoo then transmit the energy back to the ol ground.

  • Glad to see people are still trying to come up with innovative solutions to the energy crisis. Hopefully the test runs are promising.

  • The actual idea is great to be more energy indepenant. To throw a political twist in it is just disgusting. The fact is it just makes since to use any resource for power we can. Great Idea!! should've been done along time ago.

  • It looks like a good Idea, my question is how many of those does it take to power one building? How many would it take to power an entire city?

  • In the video, I think they said they have 15 turbines set up. And they also say that all of the power goes to the 2-block wide supermarket/parking garage. So if by "an entire city" you mean New York... it would take quite a few turbines.

  • So it sound like in the technology's current state, it's not very efficient; I hope that will change with time. If they wanted to reduce space, perhaps the comapny could have multiple propellor-charger devices on top of each other, so it would take less sea floor space.

  • It is really tidal power? it seems like river current power, not tidal!

  • I meant 'Is it...?"

  • You're right, tidal power isn't the correct term.

  • thats why they cause it tidal what causes tides????hm oh yah the current of the water

  • tides and waves alike are cause by the moons gravitational pull on the waters...

  • waves are caused by the wind. and im not talking about waves but about river current as it flows from higher to lower parts of land.

  • well, no! Tides are caused by gravity of the moon, and water current is coused by gravity of the earth. 2 different things :)

  • this idea has been around since the 80's the english tryed this once i think. still cool!

  • Hey, we have to be afraid of something.

  • go to mexico buddy, see how awesome the air is there, just go on a vacation there and then ask your self why do a local news channel gives you so many warning before you go outside.

... its because of the burning of fossil fuels in the factories, and the burning of gas in cars that lowers the ozone layer's ability to protect our skin from UV rays, bitch

  • Just like they hyped swine flu when Mexico was on the verge of revolution? Kind of hard to have one and over throw your corrupt government if they can make you stay inside.

    It's the Sun.

And if you want to talk about the hole in the Ozone, look at the inconsistent records of the one caused by solar flares and magnetic forces that they say is growing every year.

But maybe you're right, just because the main stream media has been caught in lie after lie, why would they lie about this? Pathetic.

  • Are you under the impression that the main stream media is the one coming up with this stuff? It just sounds like that's what you're saying.

  • Fox news openly gets it's marching orders from the white house

MSNBC held Jesse Ventura on contract for a show and they didn't like what he said, but they still censored him via the contract

    CNN: Anderson Cooper is CIA

BBC and SKYNEWS are simply the worst as well

Everything I've said is documented with credible resources

Global Warming, repackaged to Climate Change due to global cooling is touted by Al Gore and a list of cronies, non scientists and others who don't even know they were listed

  • The holes in the ozone are due to our nuclear testing....

...but my Hybrid car is gonna save the world! ^_^

  • hybrid vehicles wont save the world, they are a temporary band aids. Hydrogen cars like the clarity will save the planet from O2 emissions and our dependency on oil

  • Where does the hydrogen come from? It doesn't exist anywhere on the planet, and must be extracted from water or petroleum. It takes a lot of energy to extract it from water -- so much energy that it is very wasteful and hardly a good idea. The best solutions for clean electricity are: wind, water, solar, and nuclear.

  • They are not even temp. bandaids....They exists because it empowers people to think they are making a difference & help follow the global agenda of a carbon tax.....

Look at that dirty ass truck! What a lack of intel! right?

The only thing that will make a difference is if we build hybrid or electronic 18 wheelers, Trains, Planes & Warships

hybrid vehicles wont save the world & they won't save you from looking like a low life like everybody else

  • you have no idea what your taling about. holes in the ozone arent causing global warming. or any problems.

  • Sunspots, Earth's natural heating & cooling phases, Nukes, Co2 Pollutants....etc

Teach me what I need to know about what arent it doing

  • Are you saying the burning of fossil fuels is making the ozone layer fail? Erm, no... those were CFCs and were in the late 80s/early 90s. Now there's simply too much ozone, and it's not in the right spot (i.e. the ozone layer) creating a greenhouse effect.

  • Whatcha talkin about, there's not too much ozone in the atmosphere, if anything, too less.

Also, ozone is hardly a greenhousegas anyway...

  • The worse problem with this is that it changes the currents. You put enough of these babies in and you have a serious problem. The same thing is happening with windmills. Enough windmills have been put in the upper northwest that they are starting to change the Northern Jet stream.

  • So, what, the water'll suddenly ignore gravity and take a left?

  • No, of course not. If this is done on a big enough scale though it has the potential to cause serious problems.

  • Currents directly impact the underwater ecosystem. Many forms of life rely on the currents to carry seeds/eggs/etc to certain destinations. Powerful currents, like from storms, destroy ancient seabeds.

So yeah... KiithSamtaaw has a point.

  • Source?

The jet stream 20 or 30,000 feet in the air. Wind turbines are 200 feet. While chaos theory doesn't disrule your interesting assertion, do you have a source?

  • we ve had/at least been aware and trying to put in more of these in Canada for awhile now...?

  • It's a trade off, huh. What's worse; a few fish and birds getting chewed up in the turbines or millions of tonnes of atmospheric carbon being released?

  • why only power an insignificant supermarket?

why not 5, 10, 20% of the city!

  • ..because it's in a testing phase.

  • It's a test project. If you watch the entire video, you'll see the plans are for a 10-megawatt energy farm. But they need to prove the technology first.

  • Usa is soooo behind when it comes to eco stuff.

This turbine project is to be seen since the 1980's in Danemark ( the third of the country's energy is green).

  • your also a third of our population. It is impossible to provide only green energy to a country as overpopulated as ours

  • The US isn't overpopulated at all; in fact, Denmark's pop. density is way higher.

I agree with your intended point though...

PS: Denmark's population is mor like a sixtieth than the one of the USA, nevermind though.
