  • Beautiful run. Smart use of all the glitches of the engine. Very nice timing, and well explained (I have been able to recreate a good ammount of the things you showed here).

How long it took you to prepare this speedrun? (i mean, including failed attempts and such)

    Also, I lol'd ad \(^o^)/

  • You did it in only about 15 minutes ?!!!! I needed at least 45 minutes

  • I remember I was really scared of this game when I was a kid 'cause i thought they fought with saws. Graphics fail ^^

  • SprintGod, there are two ways. You are a cheater or professional player. If the second option, I have a full respect to you.

  • Why does this Prince have blonde hair and wearing all white in my version for the old Macintosh my Prince had blue hair red vest and white pants.

  • Beautiful. Just beautiful. Way to go dude :)

  • オワタの顔文字って世界共通なんだ7:56

  • im loving it its like reviving my childhood memory :)

    great work dude

  • @bardzodziwny from two years ago... Asshole. Why does it matter what system the game was played on? It is still a speedrun. "Not an official speedrun"... fuck yourself.

  • wow good job mate yo really know what you're doing look at that reflex damn!

you must have played this allot, ive also noticed that jumping forward is faster than running and complete levels 8 and 10 in a similar manner however i prefer to kill the guards or push them of the platform anyway. i never figured you can evade falling tile damage with crouch, ps perfect timing you are impressive!

  • Like I said in part 1: This speedrun is almost scientific. You nailed down every detail on time saving techniques. I doubt if this can be done any faster...

  • @BNS206 I think some seconds can still be eschewed

  • @LMTR14

Yeah, a few seconds at most. but I still think it's nearly impossible.Did you look carefuly at the video? This a GP F1 race, every detail counts, everything is done and studied to get the best performance...

  • I made a Video for you.

  • круто

  • Does anyone know about the "165 games in 1" package for the original gameboy? I remember playing PoP on it alongside a whole load of other fantastic games such as Tetris and some other shooting and fighting games etc but unfortuently I can't seem to find it anywhere nowadays, i really wanna play it.

  • haha EPIC how u beat Jaffar!!! very nice...

  • This version is waaay easier than the original game! here you only need two spaces to do a running jump instead of three! In the original is absolutely impossible to do things like stepping "over things" at 5:28 or (running) jumping back after pressing the door switch in level 2!

  • @KombatGod Which "original?" If you mean Prince of Persia 1.0 for the PC, you're wrong. None of the physics were changed between 1.0 and 1.4. The only changes were graphicwise. All the levels I make are with 1.0. I've stepped over things and done running jumps in 2 spaces easily. Of course, you might mean the original original...

  • @popkraz97 "original original"? What do you mean? I meant 1.0 and ALWAYS tried doing things like jumping with only two spaces, jumping over enemies, etc... So if I said that I was really sure. Well. I just downloaded POP 1.0 and I'm afraid to say I was really wrong! They all work! I still can't jump over the first enemy without dying and going trough the wall in level 7, but you were right and I (as Charles Barkley said) am a dumbass! :-)

  • @KombatGod I can't jump over any enemies. I just don't have the skill.

  • excellent 10/10

  • Very epic. Btw, does anybody know what's up with the reflection of the prince. Why is it there? Who is it? Is he evil? He does drink prince's potion and takes a sword. Was it ever explaned?

  • @romanshik originally they created him to save memories somehow cause the game had so much stuff in it they couldnt put any enemies in the game but they fixed it by creating a double of the prince with inverted colors... in the original game you only see it near the end but in the 3D versions on 360 and PS3 he follows you around the entire game... he doesnt attack you tho

  • Great vid! Next time enhance level 10 by opening gate similarly to 4th level (by prince insteand of by guard).

  • 7:52 - PWNED

  • very good....!!

  • Great run :)!!!!!!!

  • poor jaffar... he didnt have it coming

  • bien en el nivel 8 crei q era imposible min 1:33 y 1:36 d ptm

  • Im sure ive played a longer version with more bosses and stuff. Just thought it had the same graphics as the old dos version, just like this.

  • @Findulidas The SNES version has 20 levels...

  • @popkraz97

Yeah but the graphics are diffrent. Atleast the version I played.

  • Amazing.

  • I have a 16:32 speedrun of Prince of Persia on my channel, it is one CONTINOUS run. It definitely can use room for improvement but I am satisfied with it.

  • Wow, the way you defeated Jaffar was ... quick!

  • Thanks for the tips!

  • Amazing! I remember watching my brother playing the game when I was a kid. Still love it!

  • He makes it look easy, but this game was soul crushingly difficult back in the day.

  • Yeah, I am never playng it again.

  • In general old games are much more difficult than new games. I think it is a business thing. Game developers realize they attract more people if they make the game just right difficutly. I love what DooM did. They made a special difficutly for the awesome players and a regular game for normal players. This was everyone is happy.

  • Amazing!!!!!! I renember how dificult was defeat the vizier for me as a kid, and on 7:56 you did it almost in one second!

  • I was watching this vid while I was on skype with a friend, we were all amazed "ohhhhh we had to use the whole time to do the whole game when we were kids" and then at 7:56 my friend told me "ohhh man its the final boss he can't just kill him that fast... OHHH WHATT???"

  • if you read the description, it does say DOS.

  • It's the original DOS version with EXE. Maybe DOSBox is considered being an emulator but I don't see how the emulation could influence the KI. It's just an emulator to emulate a whole PC.

  • I`ve played this game hundreds of times, the best time was 26 min. 9 min is just crasy!

  • i wonder how many times he played this to figure out all those tricks...

  • This really takes me back,

I was totally addicted to this on the Amiga.

I love watching speedruns, nice to know those bloody games that drive me crazy can be beaten after all.

  • nice speedrun

  • 7:56 rofl

  • damn at 1;23 the guard was easily sliced in half by that giullotine he got owned Go Prince! I love that play scene

  • And then the prince died of a heart attack...

  • Well I wouldn't be surprised, what with all that running and jumping about without any rest break.

  • solo puedo decir una cosa increible eres un master

  • so many memories

  • you rock!!!

  • after 17 years, i finally get to see the ending of this game!! boy i played this game for a couple of years on and off when i was 7 and i still remember all the frustration when i kept on dying just 2 levels before then end.

  • Well done, Mr. Ward.

  • That was really amazing! Well done.

  • 1:23 - that sound and image used to scare the shit out of me.

  • Jaffar at 7:50 :

"Ah ha! So then, peasant of Persia, you fared well against my dungeon but can you fare as well against me? ENGARDE!"

    *proceeds to nudge forward*

    "Have at thee knave!"

    *switches places*

"You wish to dance with the Grand Vizi-oof! You bloody poked me!"

    *Falls down hole*

    "Oh buggerit all"

This run was so entertaining. I wish you the best continuing to live up to your name as the SprintGod...of Persia \(^o^)/

  • LOL, what an anticlimactic final boss battle.

  • Not only is it a speed run, it also seems to be a pacifist run, hehe.

  • @niwm lol!

  • Great game play man but for me this speed run sucks if you end the game in 10 min you just dont enjoy anythink :D. Anyway great play!

  • Congratulations!!!! I didn´t know that you can pass the final gate in level 8 without waiting the mouse

You are the best playre of POP I had ever seen

  • Great job, great indeed :D

    you're the best *O*

  • That was actually the first game I ever played :)

  • hey you are the best, are the best prince of persia player that ever see.

  • ç_ç

  • Hey Gavin, will you please run for president? I swear I would vote for you... amazing job, brilliant!

  • Jaffar's death... LOL!!!!

    That was sooo perfect!!!

    5/5

  • i always played this game about more then 10 years ago. i missed this game so much, so i just found out how to play dos games under the winxp. i download dosbox v0.72 and prince, bubble bobble, goldaxe, hardball3, supertet games and i enjoy very much. i just installed windows 3.1 under the dosbox, f--kin' runs great, alt+enter and you'll enjoy the full screen

  • wow excellent speedrun, i enjoyed it a lot!

  • 1:11 - now that's what you call a close cut!

1:36 - you're so quick that the mouse didn't even need to open the gate for you.

  • Hey SprintGod*

Can you help me out on something??

I used to always play this game as a kid, probably more than 10 years ago... but NEVER did beat it... I decided to download it this year and replay old school*. I've gotten PRETTY far this time, but I'm not sure how you're supposed to kill that shadow figure of the player at 7:25. Basically, I always kill himself. What's the catch? Am I supposed to dodge it?...

  • just press the down button?

  • Withdraw your sword back into your scabbard by pressing the down button then jump forward into the shadow so you both merge. Wait until you stop flashing then walk to the left across the invisible platform.

  • That was brilliant! I had this game for the Amiga when i was i kid. I could do a run of 18 mins or so and i thought that was awsome lol. I'll have to download a version and see if i can challenge this! (i wouldn't worry too much)

  • how do you turn the soldiers around? i did it in the ps3 version (pop1 classic) and i dont know how!

  • are you kidding me? :-D

1 question - I haven't seen that mouse, which princess sended as a help...

  • lol 1 hit K.O. boss XD

  • It missed, fool.

  • Try pausing the video on the exact moment when the cutter is closed... You will see yourself that it missed.

  • @unicalus i think u not english speak

  • Three ugly questions:

    1. Did it make the official speedrun record at the time it was issued to the community?

    2. If so, how long did it hold?

    3. Does it still hold now?

Hold on... Let me check the speedrunners...

  • To answer myself:

DOSBox isn't allowed in an official speedrun.

  • Well... technically there's no such thing as an official speedrun. It's just generally accepted that original hardware should be used where possible.

Personally I find that this attitude does nothing but hamper the production of DOS speedruns. Putting together a system that can run DOS with sound AND record it tends to be very, very awkward.

I got as far as getting it running and recording without sound before giving up. It just wasn't worth the effort.

  • Hmmm... How about...

    1. A VCR (or any analog recording device).

    2. A videocard with s-video output.

    3. A few connectors.

Taking analog video from the vid card and separately taking the audio signal from the sound card, mixing those by pure cable connecting? Tried? Impossible? Or just not worth it?

  • 1:23 i bet you were pissed off at those guards for getting your hp so low. =)

  • lmao at jafar

  • Overall, this was incredibly well done from a strategic standpoint, especially against Jaffar. Great playing.

  • Good lord, you freakin' decimated him at 4:45! No way in hell I could have done it that fast!

  • You are a fucking genius, you can play this to the Tuning

  • I love first part of POP!:) 5*

  • Where can i download this version?

  • amezing, but sick but amezing ^^ love this game

  • that is amazing!!! :O

  • o.O I admire you

  • 7:57 loool

  • haha yea best way to kill Jafar XD

  • Wow. My jaw dropped at 1:37.

  • Two questions:

Did you kill the guard at 1:23 just for show? Or is it really the fastest way?

    What exactly happens at 6:36?

I guess you're slightly further to the left after that climbing excercise, but I'm not sure.

  • Need to stand far enough to the right so a running jump doesn't make you fall off the edge in the next room. The alternative is to backstep to the switch with the sword drawn and knock the guard far enough away to have time to turn around and do a short jump over it.

Also yes, climbing down and back up moves you slightly to the left. You fall off after knocking the tile down if you don't do it.

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • What was that on 7:14 you didnt grab the right block of the floor?

  • Grabbing a tile at the bottom of the screen immediately after entering it confuses the game into thinking you've gone off the top instead of the bottom.

So... the game executes the function that moves you up to the next screen, but since you're actually at the bottom you end up teleporting upwards one screen (plus one floor) and catching hold of the tile above where you end up (if there is one).

  • nice job mate

  • I had once a version which had more than 12 levels. But I can't find it again. :))

  • Probably the SNES version, which has 20 levels.

  • 1:23 ouch

  • you are right, i tried it. why is the chomper on 3:35 innactive?

  • Chompers only activate if you climb down from the floor directly above them, so dropping down several floors like that screws them up.

  • this is arguably the hardest game ever, amazing job

  • can you go through enemies like you did on level 1 and the first guard of level 2 ?

  • on 5:28 ... how come you dont fall off the pit????

  • The step immediately before a running jump is slightly longer than a a tile wide, so if performed in exactly the right place it can be used to step over a gap or a switch.

  • lol easy way to defeat jaffar, good job

  • Cheat: Deceive by trickery

    Glitch: Programming error

Learn the difference. No cheating here.

As for glitches; how is it decided what is and isn't legal?

By strict definitions there are at least 8 other glitches used, so why are these fine while those 2 aren't?

At what point does a glitch become unacceptable by your loose and arbitrary standards?

The answer: You have a poor, ill-conceived way of thinking; creating mental rules that are impossible to define/regulate, and are stupid to play by.

  • There was no offense. My post was an attempt to correct your ignorance.

Unlike cheats, glitches are a part of the game that cannot be disabled. Arbitrarily banning or ignoring them doesn't work, because then you have to draw a clear and irrefutable line regarding what is and isn't acceptable, which is often impossible.

As such, the general consensus of speedrunners is that glitches are fine (with a few rare exceptions). If you can't understand why, fuck off.

Also, learn to format your posts.

  • excelent... congragulations...

  • in the level 12.... a trick?

  • Didn't see any there, just a use of the fact that only one platform there is falling and if you stay there Jaffar comes at you, so it's a matter of precise timing to change sides with him and a single sword slash to take care of him. I've done it and it's not a trick or anything.

  • Easier method: Run and stop on the loose tile and grab the ledge as you fall. You automatically switch sides with him as soon as you finish climbing back up.

The method I used is slightly faster, but riskier since it requires precise timing.

  • one question.... did you have fun with this, or was this simply to prove you rule at playing prince of persia?

  • A bit of both.

Another reason is that there were a few videos of fast playthroughs (including a 16:30 one I did about 3 years prior), but nothing VERY fast. I wanted there to be one, and the easiest solution was to just do it myself.

  • Whoa, never knew you could back the enemies into the deathtraps.

  • In fact, you can't do that in certain versions of this game, namely NES version where traps are like walls to enemies and they just keep bouncing off them IIRC.

  • Unbelievable..so many tricks which i dont know!very good job!it must take u years to do it :p

  • OMG it took my months to complete this game.

  • This game rocks.

  • Questo è un malato di mente!

  • not bad.

  • One of the best DOS games ever!!!

  • I cant believe this.

    Hardest game everrrrrrrrrrr!

    Respect.

  • WoW, i dont beleive my eyes :)

  • haha I like how you tricked that bastard and he fell down.

  • My record is finishing the game in with 30 mins over (taking all potions and killing all guards)

  • Hey I really admire you, but I can finish the game in 30 minutes, killing all the guards, and taking every single posion. What's more, I haven't edited the game at all.

  • Sure, now do it in 23.

  • I can't bypass the guard at 4:22 the way you do it,he simply turns around and kills me instantly...

Pretty much forcing me to take the longer way, lol.

  • Guards turn around when they hear footsteps behind them, so you need to crawl along the floor at the bottom to keep him facing away from the edge.

Then as long as you start moving immediately after climbing up, it *should* work every time.

  • Ohh,well that's a pretty sneaky AI Jordan put there. :P

    Thanks.

  • great work! how did you get through the shadow thing in level 12??

  • It's easy, you just put down your sword, and so will the shadow. Then you just run into the shadow.

  • loll

  • I just realized something. The Prince of Persia is fucking blond! ;D

anyways, good speed run. cool use of glitches. thats what makes a speed run interesting, in my book anyways, so just screw the haters. this is awesome!

  • he´s a stranger and becames prince after he rescued her ;-))

  • where is the maus on 8 level? ;F

  • what did you use to record?

Could of saved a few seconds of the last lvl btw - the part where you went up and down then up again.

  • Read the fucking description.

Also, that isn't a mistake either. Go learn some more about the game before you make thoughtless suggestions.

  • I just thought it looked like one because it looked very pointless. Im sorry, i didnt mean to make you angry :(

  • Come back here, you are the one owed an apology, not this self-righteous dickhead accusing you of unknowledgeability when he doesn't really know the truth or reason behind your comment.

  • The answer to the first question is in the description. People who can't read shouldn't bother to comment at all.

The second paragraph is a statement, not a question. Statements are implied as fact and therefore should always be checked to avoid wasting other peoples' time.

This is the second unchecked and incorrect statement he's made that I've had to correct, and the first and only time I'm telling him to stop it.

(note : two comments deleted due to redundancy)

  • In that case take that as an apology from me, as the only thing that annoys me more then stuck up people is redundant fools. Have you got or attempted a speed run of Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame?

  • Actually that last line was referring to your two subsequent posts, which said exactly the same thing as the first one except took twice as long to do it.

  • very good speed... look my question at your part 1.

  • Help please. I'm already dieing in level one. I can't jump passed the guy =/

  • Ok, now I can jump passed him, but it's a 75% chance I get stabbed to death from behind by him. And also, when I walk by someone with a sword, I can't sheath it :/

  • and the traps still scare the everliving shit out've me.

  • Haha, you killed Jaffar sooooo easily.

  • I hate level 8 xD

but damn, you really kick ass

  • Wow! Most impressive! You're even better than I. I posted my v.1.0 speedrun (16:06) yesterday, and found this run after that. I didn't know about those cunning shortcuts on the levels 4, 5 and 12, and I missed many other improvements too throughout my run. Now my own speedrun seems quite poor already :D

However, it seems you also missed a couple of improvements I had in my run. You can try to find them from my videos... I don't tell them directly ;D

  • The version you played is 1.4, so it's NOT original. I play v.1.0, and there's some differences in the game physics.

Eg. when grabbing a edge from air, you'll end up slightly closer to it (so the lvl 1 trick doesn't work without modifications, and you can't run over the pit on lvl 10 like that). Moreover, it isn't possible to do a duck-slide without turning manually be4 starting to run (so the tricks on lvls 2,3&4 can't be done exactly the same way, and the trick on lvl 10 doesn't work).

  • Everything works in all versions. You just aren't doing it right.

Pay more attention to the timing. The movements leading up to a trick must be performed in *exactly* the same positions.

  • Sorry about those doubts above, I should have tested even more before posting. I've now managed to do all those doubted tricks like you in v.1.0. Keep up the good work :)

BTW, do you know is there any fast way warp to a specific position with cheats? I only know how to get to the same position in the room on left/right side (using h/j key and then hitting right/left wall).

  • RoomShaker (google it)

You can use it to edit the level starting positions.

Just make sure you back up the levels.dat file first so you can restore it later.

  • Thanks a lot 4 telling me about that prog. It surely helps training ;)

    BTW, how come your level times aren't multiplies of 1/12 second (eg. 3/12 s = 0.25 s, 4/12 s = 0.33 s and 6/12 s = 0.50 s?)? I think you said the game runs with 12Hz (=> 1 frame = 1/12 s). I'm currently calculating my savegame times in 1/12 secs, and the hof-table seems always round the seconds down correctly.

  • The timer is slightly inaccurate. It resets the sub-minute units to 719 from 1 instead of 0, so there are 719 units per minute instead of 720. In other words, using the save file format as a reference, 3C000100 goes straight to 3B00CF02, skipping 3C000000.

When calculating my times I chose to correct this error by treating the timer as 11.98(3)Hz with each unit equalling 1/719s, so:

    3C00 CF02 = 60:00.00

    0100 CF02 = 01:00.00

    0100 CE02 = 00:59.92

    0100 0100 = 00:00.08

  • The script I wrote to read times from the save file went something like:

    Units = 719*(byte1 - 1) + byte3 + 256*byte4;

    Minutes = Units/719;

    Seconds = (Units % 719)*60/719;

Then formatted (minutes = integer rounded down, seconds = rounded to nearest 2dp)

  • Ok I understand your level times now :)

However, I think it would have been easier to regard the game minutes as 719 frames (= 719/12 game seconds), and give all times in the exact accuracy of 1/12 game seconds. When calculating the time spent on a specific level, you would just calculate with full accuracy like with normal SI-units, and then subtract (difference of level starting minutes) * (1/12 seconds) from the result.

  • Oops... you regarded one game minute as 719 frames too. I meant it would be easier to regard one game second as 12 frames and therefore one game minute as 719/12 (<60) game seconds.

If and when the game lags, the game seconds are longer than real seconds anyway, aren't they?

  • The level times won't add up to the total if you calculate them like that.

All seconds are equal, and there are 60 per minute. Pretending otherwise just screws things up.

The game thinks that every 60th second is 11/12 as long as the rest. This should not be worked around, but corrected right from the start. Either assume that 1s=12f, or that 1m=719f, not both. I chose the latter because it gives a result that, when rounded down, matches the displayed in-game time 99.9% of the time.

  • You're right... The result should be subtracted with 1/12 s, if the time - mins is greater at the end than at the start of the level. (Then when calculating the difference, one min has to be split to 59 11/12 s.) Otherwise, the result is final.

Ok, your way is easier to understand, and is best for showing times for those who don't understand so much about this PoP timer :)

But IMO it's much easier to count 100% accurate level times in your head when using my technique.
