Sorry, y'all. I'm a fucking yank who had the privilege of meeting both Cardiacs and Pixies's first album engineer Steve Albini before the end of 1986. CARDIACS CAME FIRST. Anybody who hears Pixies influence in CARDIACS is just hearing what they are able to hear. Pixies weren't even in the conversation up to "Tarred and Feathered" and "Is This The Life." Just not even known. Pixies come WAY LATER. Deal with it.

planet gong came soon after cardiacs formed, they all hung out together, cardiacs didnt become known until 78/9 but gong knew them and gong had gone stale before that, camembert was their last great album before planet gong

Personally, i think they should have a Cardiacs evening, where all the "hopefulls" deliver flawless renditions of Cardiacs classics. I think Fiery Gun Hand would suit the format quite nicely....

agree most of the cardiacs influences come from late 60s,early 70s like gong,gentle giant,bowie ,vdgg,scar bands,peter hammill etc just like most of todays good bands,the pixies are good but more of a pop band

TBH there is no comparison between mainstream bands like the Pixies, etc., and Cardiacs.

No disrespect to the Pixies, but they are simply a fairly normal good-quality rock band, solidly normal actually. Nothing in their catalogue remotely approaches songs like 'The Everso Closely Guarded Line' or 'Buds and Spawn' by Cardiacs.

Frankly, Tim Smith is a genius, comparable to Schubert or Louis Armstrong. There is no one like him in contemporary music.

I agree that the Cardiacs are awesome and Tim Smith is a genius but I wouldn't denegrate the pixies as "a fairly normal good-quality rock band". It's hard to compare but The Cardiacs stand alone whereas the pixies influenced many great bands - take your pick but any true alternative music fan should love at least 1 or both!!

Cardiacs are massively influential but are just a bit too advanced/weird for general audiences. A bit like Allan Holdsworth - a musician's musician.

I agree that the Pixies' sound, atmosphere and music is distinctive and they are also influential. They are bit too straightforward in terms of their chord progressions/tunes for my taste though.

That quote is not to be scoffed at either. Cardiacs and every off shoot from them, to do with Tim Smith at least, is unlike anything i have ever heard. Favourite bands of mine have come and gone over the years, but without equal, Cardiacs will probably be the only band i will listen to all the time until i die. They NEVER gets dull, it is beautiful !

Cardaics might have been going alot longer , But take their back catalogue from toy world to the live bootlegs at roehampton vale 1982. to the big ship in 1986, and nothing on any of these sounds anything like the pixies , But this track from the album Guns has alot to owe to The Pixies

I can see where you are coming from, but, I might argue that cardiacs/pixies come from different schools of musical thought (albeit both on the avant guard fringe). I think the pixies have a more organic approach, if you will, and I doubt that there was any conscious or cultural influence going on here. But hey, what do I know?

also when bill, sarah all jumped ship, then they was down to a 4 piece their sound changed and was less theatrical and became alot more harder faster punk edge to their tunes, you could hear alot of difference, so thats why i hear alot more pixies in their style, Also when they changed to a 4 piece and even before with sea nymphs they had a more flowing edge to their style with far less, theatrical fairground approach to their song style
