  • This is not exactly a traditional Melam. Also it is not correct to say that 2 sticks mean it is always Pandi!. I think Hallovish is right, however the only reason I tagged the video as Panchari is that while at the event, the programme list mentioned the event as "Irrukol Panchari" usually in South Kerala people don't stick too much to tradition, so an artiste like Mattanur (Who likes to experiment) can do something on this own :).. Kuttan Marar(s), Satishan Marar are best for Melams.

  • This is 'Irikol' melam but its not panchari. this is a combination of 'Chamba' with 'Vishama'

  • Hello all. With my limited knowledge, I can say this is Panchari not Pandi. Panchari is played with both 1 stick and 2 sticks. There is a difference between both. I don't have the knowledge to explain, but can differentiate to a little extent when listening. If i am not mistaken this is Panchari. Pandi is more of "raudra" bhavam than panchari.

This is known as "erukol panchari" where they use 2 sticks, but at Irinjalakuda it is famous for "ottakol panchari" where only 1 stick is used.

  • Thi sis not manjari. This is Pandi melam. Both looks same in sturcuture.

But Panjari is played with 1 stick and a hand. And padi is played with two stcks.

Usuallay Panjari is playes inside the temple premices and pandi out side the temple premices.

  • I dont think this is Panchari , the best of Panchari can be heared @ irinjalakuda Koodalmanikyan this is something different

  • thayambaka using one stick

  • This was an awesome performance!

  • what is this...? is it religious drumming? also what type of horn are they playing...trippy!

  • This is where heavy Metal started :) This music is also refered to as Asura Vadyam which can be translated as Demonica Musica. Music that has a demonic quality. Demonic here refers to Adrenalin Rush and not flying dragons! This type of music is played only in the Southern Indian State of Kerala. Legend has it that the origins of this music had people trying to reproduce the sound of Thunder! The best time to see these performances in Kerala are Feb-April

  • Panchari melam has only one stick. left hand is free ..

  • @akalhara this is known as irukol pancharimelam

  • this is not at all panchari this is pandi melam compare it with elanjithara

  • Panchari melam is usually performed using chenda kolu ( stick) in the right hand and left hand. Here he is using chenda kolu in both hands . certainly this is not panchari.

  • That is what I thhought as well. But this is a special type of Panchari called "Irikol Panchari Melam" that I have never seen before. If you manage to get the program guide for Ettumaanoor aarratu 2008, you can get the actual name, I think it was called "irrikol" Panchari Melam

  • Dear friend ,

Thanks for your inteest in the matter.Traditional Panchari is done as I said. This Irukol panchari is conducted when there are no enough drummers. But this is not scientific. Ettumanur and the southern side of Kerala does not have not much knowledge about this melam itself. Now they have started slowly .

  • Thanks for your clarification. I like traditional Panchari better. You are right as there were not enough drummers like a standard Pachari melam. You are also right about southern states not having enough knowledgeable people about melam. They just get drunk and jump. I want to see a proper Panchari of Mattanur and Peruvanam Kuttan Marar as well. I am planning to see Irinjalakudda pooram to see the best of Panchari :)
