about 15 years or more ago they played some rare sound skits of Elvis singing all different types of songs and one was my favorite but I have never heard it anywhere else and I cannot remember which radio station it was on. It was a funny, flirty, playful song and short but LOVED it. I can't even remember any lyrics.... I think it had the word cherry in it but not sure and was medium to fast paced and funny....does this ring a bell with anyone?
I love Elvis and was surprised many years ago when I learned that he dyed his hair black because he preferred his hair dark instead of his true hair color. He's just the most physically gifted person, man or woman to ever walk the earth. But then we all know that he could sing his heart out and his voice was just as beautiful. Thanks for this video clip. He looked very clean and handsome. No one looks like that today.

thank you for the clips of Elvis. The nearest I got to him was visiting the meditation garden. I would loved to have met that wonderful, generous, beautiful, sweet, man. he was so lovely. God Bless him.
How could Parker NOT know Elvis had a drug problem? You think he NEVER asked the doctor what was wrong?? Did he care that little? OF course he knew - but as he often said -"There is nothing more important than Elvis being on stage tonight!"
Did all the doctors miss it? Doubtful!! Parker knew - and probably put off doing anything about it just to avoid pissing Elvis off and losing his only client - using he familiar "We'll fix it tomorrow" method!!
Nothing is going to convince you that the Colonel wasn't the devil you think he was, will it? And yet if you talk to someone like Joe Esposito who was not only one of Elvis' best friends but worked intimately with the Colonel he would tell you flat out the Colonel was not the evil man so many make him out to be.
I've read an article of Alanna Nash - who wrote the book "The Colonel" in 2003 and she said that the colonel said - as far a "A Star Is Born" Elvis did not want to do the movie - so he told Parker to "make his fee so high - they could not afford him.". If this were true - why did Elvis ADMIT that he really wanted to do the movie but Parker thought it was a bad idea? MAYBE Elvis was using Parker to cover his mistakes?
Simply put - MOST of Elvis mistakes are DIRECTLY related to Parker!!!
Parker was a skunk - most in the business know this (I was in the music business many years ago). For EVERY deal he made for Elvis - he cut a side deal for himself. You had to have a side deal with Parker - usually involving large CASH payments. He took advantage of Elvis - there is no doubt about this!!
But I will ALWAYS blame Parker for Elvis death - there was only 1 person on earth that could have straightened Elvis out - Parker - and he did nothing - but cut a side deal!!
So basically - you are exactly like Parker - if you see your ONLY client is in trouble - then you assume that NOTHING can be done - so you insure him to the MAX - and do nothing!!!! I would have kidnapped him - and stuck him in rehab - AT ANY COST!! They all know his health was very poor - and they all did NOTHING - except cach the checks!!!!!
@Earthlinked Dude he tired to fire him but Parker threatened to sue 5 million form life saving and he died becuase he overdosed on his mother's death's anniversary
There is plenty of blame to go around Elvis circle of "friends". They all (including Parker) knew he had a drug problem - and they helped (got his drugs) more than anything - what Elvis wanted - Elvis got - good or bad. There was such a FEAR of saying NO to him - he had no real friends - only employees!!
Elvis was simply a spoiled, dumb, country bumpkin with a true gift from God - that voice. I think everybody around him feasted on him and just watched him die - and did nothing to help!!!!!!
I think it's a little harsh to call him a "dumb, country bumpkin". Elvis was actually quite a bright man which is evidenced when one sees the notes he would scribble in the margins of the books he read. And yes, the people in Elvis' circle facilitated his drug abuse, but I wouldn't include the Colonel in that. The Colonel and Elvis had a long standing understanding not to get involved in one another's personal lives.
Elvis was not a very intelligent man - a musical GENIUS - there is no doubt whatsoever - he worked his ass off and perfected his music and his pitch perfect voice - you do not develop this - it is a gift from God!!! But when it came to finances - Elvis was completely out of his league!
And promises or not - if in the same situation - I'd choose to save his life!!!!!!!
Parker knew - how could he NOT!! Elvis was canceling concerts - and that hit Parker right square in the wallet!!!!!!
If you want to blame the Colonel for Elvis dying then I say to you again blame Elvis' father Vernon FIRST, but the fact is only Elvis is to blame. You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved. Everyone, including the Colonel, at some point tried to speak to Elvis about what he was doing to himself. You have to stop demonizing the Colonel. He was neither all black or all white, not all sinner nor all saint.
Not really!! I think Elvis feared Parker more than anything and Parker KNEW it. But instead of using that fear to straighten Elvis out - he worked him as much as he could. There is simply NO WAY that Parker did NOT know Elvis had a problem - but he avoided doing anything about it. Parker - more than Vernon or anyone else - held a power over Elvis to FORCE him into getting help - but he stood by and did NOTHING. And THAT is what I blame him for!! He knew there was a problem and he did NOTHING!
One question - why in the world did Elvis never dump Tom Parker??? Was Elvis that afraid of confrontation?? He HAD to have known that Parker was stealing him blind!!! IT seems to me that there is a big difference in someone that can make you a start and someone that can keep you there!! Parker was all about the money - and Elvis's career - as big as it was - was never what it could have been.
How can we really know what Elvis would have been like without the Colonel? If not for the Colonel Elvis would not have had the early TV exposure he did as that was negotiated into the contract with RCA by the Colonel. If not for the Colonel Elvis would not have had the long standing movie relationship with Hal Wallis (King Creole, GI Blues, Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls! Roustabout, Easy Come Easy Go). Aloha From Hawaii was 100% the Colonel's idea.
Come on!! Ever seen Elvis perform? He would have been a superstar with NO manager!! And I think that those "Elvis Movies" did more harm than good - Elvis wanted to be a serious actor - but Parker wanted the quick cash!!
And Aloha From Hawaii was RCA's idea - they wanted to show the new technology from a company they owned - NBC!! AT&T had linked them by satellite and then wanted to do a live world broadcast - just in time for an Elvis comeback!!!!
You are incorrect. Since the early 60s the Colonel had been pitching the idea of a live broadcast performance such as "Aloha From Hawaii" but at the time the technology did not exist. As for the movies, you say they did more harm but they served as a vehicle to keep Elvis in the public eye which facilitated his "comeback" and which led to his second run of live performances in the 70s. To say that Elvis would have been a superstar with "NO manager" is a stretch for the reason I already listed.
I completely disagree - Parker looked into the future and saw satellite picture transmissions all over the world??? VERY doubtful this was simply a case of the technology came at the same times Elvis need it and Elvis happened to be working for RCA at the time who was pushing it (RCA owned NBC at the time)!! Parker was no genius he was an uneducated dog catcher in Florida for a while that simply got the right guy at the right time! And stole him blind for many years!!!
As early as 1960 Colonel Parker was floating the idea of a live performance broadcast live across the country. It's a simple fact. He kept at the idea all throughout the 60s and kept approaching RCA about it until it ultimately morphed into the Aloha Show. Insult him all you want, but I'm just telling you facts.
That - I think - is simply not true!! RCA and NBC (not sure if it was NBC, CBS or ABC that RCA owned) had developed satellite transmissions in the mid 1960s and once it was a proven technology they went hunting for a global event to televise. They didn't look far as Elvis was now on RCA - not Capital Records!!!
You stated they were looking for Across the country and Aloha Show was the first GLOBALLY transmitted show with over 1 billion viewers in over 120 countries!!!
Okay, let me walk you through it. Starting in about 1960 the Colonel had the idea for a nationally broadcast live performance which would be aired in participating theaters. Over the years his vision continued to evolve as technology evolved. By 1972 he was pitching the idea of a global broadcast because the technology existed. Aloha from Hawaii was born from the Colonel's vision. It's a documented fact. You can read all about it Peter Gurlanick's biography of Elvis.
Parker (an illegal alien - that is why Elvis never performed outside the US - he was afraid that he could not get a passport) probably said - "Sorry Elvis - I pissed away another $ million last night - you'll have to sing for an extra week - so I signed that contract for you this morning!"
They had a lot of conversations like that - Parker stole Elvis BLIND - sometimes Parker lost so much at the Vegas gambling tables - Elvis had to extend his engagement for a week or two!!!
Even I were to agree completely with your view of Tom Parker in the end Elvis still went along. Elvis was not one for confrontations nor much of a risk taker. With few exceptions he tended to take the path of least resistance everytime.
YEP! And Parker knew it and used it against him. Elvis was originally Streisands choice to play in "A Star Is Born" in 1975 Elvis desperately wanted to be a serious actor - but Parker said no - it had a 5 month shooting schedule and Parker thought ALL movies can be made in 3 weeks - plus it was NOT an "Elvis ends up with the girl" movie - as MOST Elvis movies were!!! Parker turned her down without telling Elvis about the picture. This angered Elvis very much - but he said and did - NOTHING!
That's about 75% false. Barbara Streisand personally met with Elvis about the part in his dressing room. This is very well documented. Initially Elvis was very excited about it, but the more he thoguht about it the more trepidation he felt. When the Colonel went to negotiate with Streisand's people he demanded Elvis get top billing and more money than they were willing to pay so the deal died, HOWEVER Elvis knew all this and was clearly relieved afterwards. Again, this is all well documented.
Thanks for the update!! There are more Elvis "Urban Legends" floating around - than Elvis sightings!!!!!
Still, I think that the Parker was a rat!! He used Elvis against himself - and sometimes charged a 50% management fee - when 10% is normal! He knew Elvis hated confrontation - and probably feared him - and used this against him!
Well actually the arrangement between Elvis and Colonel Tom up until about 1973 or so was 25% and I believe remained that on records, but became 50% on concerts and memorabilia because the Colonel was the one doing all the booking, the leg work, the promotion and so forth. Elvis knew very well what most managers made but was more than happy with the arrangement.
25% is outrageous - when 10% is the norm!! That is the JOB of a manager - to do the leg work!! Elvis generated $44 billion - and died with less than $3 million in assets - including Graceland! While he spent a lot - Parker charged a lot. For a man of his fame and fortune - Elvis was basically BROKE when he died - he was doing concerts - to pay the bills because of that rat bastard thief Parker!!
Happy - very doubtful - nonconfrontational - is the word that best describes their relationship!!
Elvis died with such relatively low assets because of his rampant spending and complete lack of investments. It's easy to blame the Colonel but it is not fair. Believe me, once I believed as you do, but when you really study their relationship you realize that as much as the Colonel was no saint he was no devil and Elvis himself was much less a saint than one would like to believe. If you were to talk to Joe Esposito or the Wests they would tell you that ultimately Elvis loved Tom Parker.
Overall - Elvis needed an honest manager - and I think I could have managed him - and he'd still be the biggest singer alive!! He was a recording MACHINE - he pumped out 71 albums in 19 active recording years - which is really amazing - even though the last several years - he could go into the studio and hit it on the first try - which is very rare!
Is it true that Parker never allowed Elvis to perform outside USA - because Parker could not get a passport because Parker was an illegal alien?
I don't think of Parker so much as dishonest as he was simply outdated by, say, 1970. As for never performing outside the USA this is the going explanation but truthfully I think it was again Elvis being very conservative and being more comfortable with what he knew. And as a side note Elvis did actually perform outside the USA in 1957 in a series of concerts in Ontario, Canada.
Parker took a advantage of Elvis!! Elvis told several people that he would LOVE to perform in Europe - but Parker thought it was not a good idea due to security (If you really wanted to scare Elvis - mention security!!) And to go from USA to Canada & Mexico - a drivers license - NO PASSPORT WAS NECESSARY!! MANY in Vegas said Parker ALWAYS said "There is NOTHING more important than Elvis performing tonight" - including once when 2 shows were canceled because Elvis had a flu - Parker was PISSED!!
Elvis did not perform in Europe ultimately because he didn't want to. When Elvis truly wanted something there was nothing anyone could do to stop him including the Colonel. Case in point the '68 Special. The Colonel was 100% AGAINST the concept of that show but Elvis put his foot down (one of the few times he did). As for show cancelations, believe me, the reason the Colonel was pissed at those times, and there were several, is because Elvis was too drugged up to perform, not sick.
Parker also wanted Elvia in a Santa suit for a Christmas concert - Elvis said no.
If Parker was pissed because Elvis was too drugged up to perform - then I blame Parker for his death!!! He knew there was a problem and did nothing but cash the checks and keep him onstage. EVEN BACK THEN - it would have been understood to kidnap Elvis and get treatment - even cold turkey - but Parker just cashed the checks!!
No. That "Elvis in a Santa suit" is a complete myth which has morphed from the fact that Elvis' annual Christmas card featured a picture of the Colonel dressed as Santa. As for blaming the Colonel for Elvis dying, then why not blame Vernon, Elvis's father or Priscilla, or Linday Thompson or Ginger Alden? Sorry. Elvis is responsible for Elvis' drug related death. No one else.
Parker kept Elvis working in Vegas - ONLY to pay his own gambling debts - Parker was a terrible gambler - often losing $1 million a night!!! Then he discovered that he could charge whatever he wanted - instead of the usual 10% fee - and he was often charging 50%. His JOB was to do the leg work - 10% of Elvis's fee (I think it was $85,000 per show in 1970) SHOULD be a great living - unless you have a terrible gambling habit!!!
Again, going back to the 50s the Colonel was making 25% on record and movie deals, plus reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses which he almost never actually did. Around 1974 or so a new contract was drawn up so that the Colonel and Elvis were 50/50 partners on the live performances and merchandising. Right or wrong Elvis agreed to it. The Colonel's gambling habit had less to do with the only TWICE a year Vegas schedule than the huge amount of money paid to Elvis by the Hilton.
This is fantastic. What a rare insight you must have had into his life at that time.He changed the face of music forever and I adore him.Thank you so much for posting and sharing this with everyone.
thats wonderfull, and i lucky to be leaving close to hia army years home in fort hood, texas.also i went inside july 17,was for sale the home he use to rent.already sold.i wish was mine.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing this video. Too bad there are so many losers who hide behind fake usernames and leave rude comments. That's one thing I hate about the internet. Re. the video, Elvis didn't seem as happy that day as he usually was. Was he in a bad mood that day or what?
Great to see Kurt and Elvis getting ready to shoot the famous kick scene. If you had told them in 1962 that one day the little boy would play the king they would have stared in total disbelief!
Hey Mr. I am sOOO Jealous of you Like.. I feel even more sorry for those born AFTER 1977 who didnt even see him Live.. In thi video he doesnt just look like the king of RnR, he looks(and of cours IS) KING OF THE WORLD.
Fantastic!! You are such a lucky guy! Thank you for sharing. Its my birthday on the 17th of September & we will be celebrating it at Gracelands, i will be 42!! I cant believe i'm going to be at Elvis's home. It must be an awesome feeling to have known him & stood by him. In one video comment on youtube someone said that Elvis is the next thing to God & i utterly agree. Good luck mate, Steve.

But I will ALWAYS blame Parker for Elvis death - there was only 1 person on earth that could have straightened Elvis out - Parker - and he did nothing - but cut a side deal!!

Believe what you want. The facts are what they are, but by all means cling to all the myths you like.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Aren't we all doing that!! IT is obvious that Parker lied to and used Elvis - just as Elvis lied to and used him!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago 3
Only one person could have fixed elvis. That would have been Elvis. He knew what he was doing. he was not dumb. He did the things he wanted to do.
wrinkledquarter 2 years ago
So basically - you are exactly like Parker - if you see your ONLY client is in trouble - then you assume that NOTHING can be done - so you insure him to the MAX - and do nothing!!!! I would have kidnapped him - and stuck him in rehab - AT ANY COST!! They all know his health was very poor - and they all did NOTHING - except cach the checks!!!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
@Earthlinked Dude he tired to fire him but Parker threatened to sue 5 million form life saving and he died becuase he overdosed on his mother's death's anniversary
sealedfate58 1 year ago
There is plenty of blame to go around Elvis circle of "friends". They all (including Parker) knew he had a drug problem - and they helped (got his drugs) more than anything - what Elvis wanted - Elvis got - good or bad. There was such a FEAR of saying NO to him - he had no real friends - only employees!!
Elvis was simply a spoiled, dumb, country bumpkin with a true gift from God - that voice. I think everybody around him feasted on him and just watched him die - and did nothing to help!!!!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
I think it's a little harsh to call him a "dumb, country bumpkin". Elvis was actually quite a bright man which is evidenced when one sees the notes he would scribble in the margins of the books he read. And yes, the people in Elvis' circle facilitated his drug abuse, but I wouldn't include the Colonel in that. The Colonel and Elvis had a long standing understanding not to get involved in one another's personal lives.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Elvis was not a very intelligent man - a musical GENIUS - there is no doubt whatsoever - he worked his ass off and perfected his music and his pitch perfect voice - you do not develop this - it is a gift from God!!! But when it came to finances - Elvis was completely out of his league!
And promises or not - if in the same situation - I'd choose to save his life!!!!!!!
Parker knew - how could he NOT!! Elvis was canceling concerts - and that hit Parker right square in the wallet!!!!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
If you want to blame the Colonel for Elvis dying then I say to you again blame Elvis' father Vernon FIRST, but the fact is only Elvis is to blame. You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved. Everyone, including the Colonel, at some point tried to speak to Elvis about what he was doing to himself. You have to stop demonizing the Colonel. He was neither all black or all white, not all sinner nor all saint.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Not really!! I think Elvis feared Parker more than anything and Parker KNEW it. But instead of using that fear to straighten Elvis out - he worked him as much as he could. There is simply NO WAY that Parker did NOT know Elvis had a problem - but he avoided doing anything about it. Parker - more than Vernon or anyone else - held a power over Elvis to FORCE him into getting help - but he stood by and did NOTHING. And THAT is what I blame him for!! He knew there was a problem and he did NOTHING!
Earthlinked 2 years ago 2
totally agree with you mate
redspecialguy 2 years ago
One question - why in the world did Elvis never dump Tom Parker??? Was Elvis that afraid of confrontation?? He HAD to have known that Parker was stealing him blind!!! IT seems to me that there is a big difference in someone that can make you a start and someone that can keep you there!! Parker was all about the money - and Elvis's career - as big as it was - was never what it could have been.
Earthlinked 2 years ago
How can we really know what Elvis would have been like without the Colonel? If not for the Colonel Elvis would not have had the early TV exposure he did as that was negotiated into the contract with RCA by the Colonel. If not for the Colonel Elvis would not have had the long standing movie relationship with Hal Wallis (King Creole, GI Blues, Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls! Roustabout, Easy Come Easy Go). Aloha From Hawaii was 100% the Colonel's idea.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Earthlinked 2 years ago
You are incorrect. Since the early 60s the Colonel had been pitching the idea of a live broadcast performance such as "Aloha From Hawaii" but at the time the technology did not exist. As for the movies, you say they did more harm but they served as a vehicle to keep Elvis in the public eye which facilitated his "comeback" and which led to his second run of live performances in the 70s. To say that Elvis would have been a superstar with "NO manager" is a stretch for the reason I already listed.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
I completely disagree - Parker looked into the future and saw satellite picture transmissions all over the world??? VERY doubtful this was simply a case of the technology came at the same times Elvis need it and Elvis happened to be working for RCA at the time who was pushing it (RCA owned NBC at the time)!! Parker was no genius he was an uneducated dog catcher in Florida for a while that simply got the right guy at the right time! And stole him blind for many years!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
As early as 1960 Colonel Parker was floating the idea of a live performance broadcast live across the country. It's a simple fact. He kept at the idea all throughout the 60s and kept approaching RCA about it until it ultimately morphed into the Aloha Show. Insult him all you want, but I'm just telling you facts.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
That - I think - is simply not true!! RCA and NBC (not sure if it was NBC, CBS or ABC that RCA owned) had developed satellite transmissions in the mid 1960s and once it was a proven technology they went hunting for a global event to televise. They didn't look far as Elvis was now on RCA - not Capital Records!!!
You stated they were looking for Across the country and Aloha Show was the first GLOBALLY transmitted show with over 1 billion viewers in over 120 countries!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
Okay, let me walk you through it. Starting in about 1960 the Colonel had the idea for a nationally broadcast live performance which would be aired in participating theaters. Over the years his vision continued to evolve as technology evolved. By 1972 he was pitching the idea of a global broadcast because the technology existed. Aloha from Hawaii was born from the Colonel's vision. It's a documented fact. You can read all about it Peter Gurlanick's biography of Elvis.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Check out how his expression changes after Tom Parker says something to him. Interesting.
jgraglan 2 years ago
Parker (an illegal alien - that is why Elvis never performed outside the US - he was afraid that he could not get a passport) probably said - "Sorry Elvis - I pissed away another $ million last night - you'll have to sing for an extra week - so I signed that contract for you this morning!"
They had a lot of conversations like that - Parker stole Elvis BLIND - sometimes Parker lost so much at the Vegas gambling tables - Elvis had to extend his engagement for a week or two!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
Even I were to agree completely with your view of Tom Parker in the end Elvis still went along. Elvis was not one for confrontations nor much of a risk taker. With few exceptions he tended to take the path of least resistance everytime.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Earthlinked 2 years ago
That's about 75% false. Barbara Streisand personally met with Elvis about the part in his dressing room. This is very well documented. Initially Elvis was very excited about it, but the more he thoguht about it the more trepidation he felt. When the Colonel went to negotiate with Streisand's people he demanded Elvis get top billing and more money than they were willing to pay so the deal died, HOWEVER Elvis knew all this and was clearly relieved afterwards. Again, this is all well documented.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Thanks for the update!! There are more Elvis "Urban Legends" floating around - than Elvis sightings!!!!!
Still, I think that the Parker was a rat!! He used Elvis against himself - and sometimes charged a 50% management fee - when 10% is normal! He knew Elvis hated confrontation - and probably feared him - and used this against him!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
Well actually the arrangement between Elvis and Colonel Tom up until about 1973 or so was 25% and I believe remained that on records, but became 50% on concerts and memorabilia because the Colonel was the one doing all the booking, the leg work, the promotion and so forth. Elvis knew very well what most managers made but was more than happy with the arrangement.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
25% is outrageous - when 10% is the norm!! That is the JOB of a manager - to do the leg work!! Elvis generated $44 billion - and died with less than $3 million in assets - including Graceland! While he spent a lot - Parker charged a lot. For a man of his fame and fortune - Elvis was basically BROKE when he died - he was doing concerts - to pay the bills because of that rat bastard thief Parker!!
Happy - very doubtful - nonconfrontational - is the word that best describes their relationship!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
Elvis died with such relatively low assets because of his rampant spending and complete lack of investments. It's easy to blame the Colonel but it is not fair. Believe me, once I believed as you do, but when you really study their relationship you realize that as much as the Colonel was no saint he was no devil and Elvis himself was much less a saint than one would like to believe. If you were to talk to Joe Esposito or the Wests they would tell you that ultimately Elvis loved Tom Parker.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Overall - Elvis needed an honest manager - and I think I could have managed him - and he'd still be the biggest singer alive!! He was a recording MACHINE - he pumped out 71 albums in 19 active recording years - which is really amazing - even though the last several years - he could go into the studio and hit it on the first try - which is very rare!
Is it true that Parker never allowed Elvis to perform outside USA - because Parker could not get a passport because Parker was an illegal alien?
Earthlinked 2 years ago
I don't think of Parker so much as dishonest as he was simply outdated by, say, 1970. As for never performing outside the USA this is the going explanation but truthfully I think it was again Elvis being very conservative and being more comfortable with what he knew. And as a side note Elvis did actually perform outside the USA in 1957 in a series of concerts in Ontario, Canada.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Parker took a advantage of Elvis!! Elvis told several people that he would LOVE to perform in Europe - but Parker thought it was not a good idea due to security (If you really wanted to scare Elvis - mention security!!) And to go from USA to Canada & Mexico - a drivers license - NO PASSPORT WAS NECESSARY!! MANY in Vegas said Parker ALWAYS said "There is NOTHING more important than Elvis performing tonight" - including once when 2 shows were canceled because Elvis had a flu - Parker was PISSED!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
Elvis did not perform in Europe ultimately because he didn't want to. When Elvis truly wanted something there was nothing anyone could do to stop him including the Colonel. Case in point the '68 Special. The Colonel was 100% AGAINST the concept of that show but Elvis put his foot down (one of the few times he did). As for show cancelations, believe me, the reason the Colonel was pissed at those times, and there were several, is because Elvis was too drugged up to perform, not sick.
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Parker also wanted Elvia in a Santa suit for a Christmas concert - Elvis said no.
If Parker was pissed because Elvis was too drugged up to perform - then I blame Parker for his death!!! He knew there was a problem and did nothing but cash the checks and keep him onstage. EVEN BACK THEN - it would have been understood to kidnap Elvis and get treatment - even cold turkey - but Parker just cashed the checks!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
KingCreole74 2 years ago
Parker kept Elvis working in Vegas - ONLY to pay his own gambling debts - Parker was a terrible gambler - often losing $1 million a night!!! Then he discovered that he could charge whatever he wanted - instead of the usual 10% fee - and he was often charging 50%. His JOB was to do the leg work - 10% of Elvis's fee (I think it was $85,000 per show in 1970) SHOULD be a great living - unless you have a terrible gambling habit!!!
Earthlinked 2 years ago
Again, going back to the 50s the Colonel was making 25% on record and movie deals, plus reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses which he almost never actually did. Around 1974 or so a new contract was drawn up so that the Colonel and Elvis were 50/50 partners on the live performances and merchandising. Right or wrong Elvis agreed to it. The Colonel's gambling habit had less to do with the only TWICE a year Vegas schedule than the huge amount of money paid to Elvis by the Hilton.
