You didn't really say anything. It's just a scale. It's worthless. No real instruction nor demonstration of the mix. You should be ashamed even to post this.
@howyadoinable I know what you mean, singing teachers are often light on explanation. The thing is, if you practice doing this scale whilst keeping your throat as relaxed as possible and not belting, doing this scale will help you develop your mixed voice.
I think singing teachers often forget to explain that doing the scales is the practice you need and if done correctly will be all the tuition you need. The theory behind it all is rather surplus to requirements.
Hmm... what if I have a nasal voice whenever I sing high? It's almost like I'm doing a falsetto, because it's weak and unattached... and I've basically been doing it all my life. Is that too weird of an explanation?
Hi Ian when i do this mum exercise my voice goes all squeaky and it cracks and it goes like breathy as.. i really wan’t to find my mix voice in about 4-8 weeks (2 months) but my voice just does that i don’t know why? and my voice is still going through changes at the moment will i still be able to do this exercise? I’m really worried because i badly want to do this exercise and i wan’t to experience my mixed voice within a week is that possible? if it is could you tell me how thanks!
@Rocky46461 I cover development of chest, head and mixed voice notes, deep breathing and improving tone. You will get 7 downloadable mp3 exercises and 5 videos.
heyyy this excercise is great but i dont think im getting my mixed voice....i might just be going to the high voice...but how do i get like i really good mixed voice>????????????
hello Aussie me and you talked last year it was something about my talent show and i was sick o; but i wanted to know if you would mind me sending you a video of me singing in an extremely high part of my voice that i discovered i had last year and you telling me exactly what it is o.o?
@AussieVocalCoach well i just recorded the video of it o.o my voice has alot of mucus cause i was singing alot today int his voice and it seems to wear down rather quickly but the video is on my profile O:
Hi ian, i am stuck on a technique that i feel is impossible, yet a guy some how does it, he sings with a deep chest voice and a high head voice at the same time, and its an octave apart, see downlode singing sweet child of mine on youtube, and he switches to the voice at 3:05 then normal voice, then at 3:22, then back to normal then again at 5:01. he does it in a number of songs when he wants high power, his voice transforms , its awesome live as it sends shiver down ones spine, what's he doing?
Hello Aussie, quick question. I found my mix, I can go up and down no problem in scales and in songs. But I have this one problem that the "tone" of my mixed doesn't seem to be like the "belted chest" (tone is not strong). I just need more practice or am I doing something wrong?
@thienfoil: I sort of second that. Starting today though, I managed to find the belted sound.. I have a hard time finding it every time though, it comes and goes. Practise makes perfect huh? But the scales didn't do it for me; I just first identified my head-chest break and went over the flip slowly on a "uuh" sound (cause I found that the uuh positioned my tongue to ease the process). When I get the belted sound I feel vibrations in the chest, and it sort of "feels" more like chest voice.
Hey, I'm a low, low baritone. I have a chest and a head voice, but after spending money even on the "mastering mix" program I haven't gotten any connection whatsoever. I've gotten close to a smooth transition but it never sticks. Do you do skype lessons or something like that?
@Bigruffgreeks Are you a student of my course? If not you can enrol for free. Just click on the link in the description area. I cover mixed voice and register connection in much more detail. I plan to offer skype lessons soon. Ian
@Bigruffgreeks Sometimes consistency doesn't work because you are doing something wrong. When you are in your "mixed" you should feel the resonance around your nose and face, I have been practicing with extremely low volume with 2-3 hours a day trying to control my resonance and I got a decent mixed in 3 months
@ChilliWithBeans Hi. I cover the mixed voice in a 30 minutes lesson in my Free 8 week course. You can find a link to it on my channel. For now make sure you are keeping your throat as relaxed as you can. Don't let your larynx (the bump in your neck) rise when doing the exercises.
Hi Ian,I have a nasal voice and people say that when i sing its sounds like im mumbling and sounds like there's a lot of phlegm in the throat.what's your advice?thanks:D
@aquastica Hmmm kinda tough to give you a solution without hearing you but I'll do my best! What you need to do is firstly eliminate a bit of nasality. Try dropping your jaw more when you sing as this will allow more sound to resonate in your throat. To get more clarity when you sing try doing an exercise where you stick your tongue out as far as you can and sing the words as best you can. That will clear up your diction. As for phlegm, that could be diet, or environment related.
Hello aussie, I havent find my mixed voice yet even though I keep my throat relax. I still go into falsetto, should i just let my cross over and sing in falsetto and it'll automatically come to me?
@thienfoil You should resist going into falsetto as I don't think that will eventually help you with mixed voice. Stay tuned i have a video on the way which goes into mixed voice in more depth. I think that will help you.
@luigimanzanares Absolutely normal. That is a good sign that you are staying connected through your bridge. It will get easier (and less creaky) with practice.
hi Ian...my question is what is your opinion on the position of the larynx? should we keep it low or high...i think saying 'mum' makes it low...but i can't figure out how i can know for sure that i am keeping my larynx low. can you help?
When singing in mixed voice your larynx should be in a low rested position. This is also true for head voice. To figure out if you are keeping your larynx low watch yourself in a mirror. If you see it shooting up as you sing that is something that you will need to fix. You can also monitor yourself by placing your hand on your throat and feeling for movement.
Mixed voice uses a combination of resonance in the head, throat and chest. This type of sound is often used when "crying" There is a technique that I use which involves using a "sob" to access mixed voice. New video coming soon on the topic.
@defeatedwyvern I think its okay to move just a bit. Check the muscles around the top of ur adams apple. The point is that if they get tight, u are doing it wrong.
when i try to sing empire state of mind chorus...the pressure is in my neck and my face shows the effect of it by being reddish and my nose gets bigger...help me to solve those problems...! :[
I took it off after you expressed your confusion. After reviewing the video I realised that I didn't demonstrate high enough, so I am going to re-record the lesson and sing well into my head voice.
I have some question, i have trouble ofc with the mixed voice, when i switch from chest to head theres always the gap in between and it sounds pretty bad, the same thing is with this exercise, when im going higher for the head it's always instant switch, nothing in between
Do i just need to keep practicing this, and how long will i take before i can switch smoothly?
oh and btw thanks a lot for these videos i really appriciate:D
I have a doubt that has been eating my head for like a month. So mixed voice is a combination of chest and head voice. In chest voice your vocal cords vibrate along their entire lenght and in head voice they vibrate about 1/3 of their lenght. So how do they vibrate in mixed voice? And do you develop mixed voice with this kind of scale excersises?
I have the same question. Maybe it's either singing in chest voice (entire length) with a light heady tone or singing in head voice (1/3 length) with a deep chesty tone? Hopefully someone comes along and helps us out
Simple really. I am a baritone and sung up to the extreme of my mixed voice. Any higher would have been pure head voice and not the purpose of this lesson. "The average chest voice" is a bit of a general statement. Not too many singers can sing up to top G in pure chest voice.
