wow... you compiled already written code you ledge... why don't you find all the c programs on the internet and compile those too...add some noobish comments in to make them witty while you have random file names scroll down the screen as they're being outputted... that'll add to your 1337 status. Try writing one and get back to us.
that was two years ago, you insensitive clod! I know C and have looked at kernel source code since 2003. I've yet to go through Linux Device Drivers though, bringing lame excuses like "not enough disk space on root."
dont diss ubuntu users, us linux users have got to stick together and rise up against that damn company taking over the planet and steeling everyones money (micro$oft)
He's not compiling any kernel <.< try to install any distribution of linux, and, when it is loading press esc and try to write something... It will be similar...
You made me laugh, for a good second there.. Then you made me write a flame that exceeded the allowed maximum of characters.. So I had to delete it, and you'll have to do with this: You're an idiot.
How much takes you to compile it?, i mean im a Linux User, but i have no time to compile it, i just wanna know if hardware does a difference in compiling time/speed or is relative similar on some machines.
About ten minutes on my computer. It can take much longer depending on how many features and drivers you selected to compile. I remember once it was around 45 minutes on older computer.
it depends what kernel you are compiling; along with what distro you are using, and the power of the computer- like how the computer is. normally people don't compile a new kernel...because for example linux 2.6.18 is basically the same as linux 2.6.24; that is about a year apart. maybe longer. i mean- it makes a difference in security and maybe a few other things...but not really anything an average user would be worried about lol
no. compiling 2.4 is (slightly?) different, especially for the ps2! Maybe you can find tutorials on how to do it, and see if someone had done it before or if it's even possible.
you know if you add the -j64 flag to make, it'll compile faster, right?
Like this:
$ make -j64 menuconfig
$ make -j64
$ make -j64 modules
# make -j64 modules_install
# make -j64 install

looks great, but, do you think update the Playstation 2 Kernel 2.1 to 2.4 is possible with your tutorial steps?
PeruvianDude 4 years ago
no. compiling 2.4 is (slightly?) different, especially for the ps2! Maybe you can find tutorials on how to do it, and see if someone had done it before or if it's even possible.

I haven't compiled a kernel yet. Should I learn assembly and C first or should I wait 'till I get a computer science degree before attempting it?
What was the geek joke in this vid, was there one? Help a non-egghead out please.
stargazer3k 4 years ago
No, you only need to know how to rtfm and type at the command line.
For the geek note see the related vid from mrjakid :P

cheers!
mushk45 4 years ago
I'm not even sure, dude.
I was under the impression that all you had to do was do a
./configure to generate a make file built around your system's attributes, then just run make.
Maybe make install...i'm not sure.
I feel stupid.
disciple4Christ 4 years ago
it's ok...feeling stupid is the beginning of learning!
you can take a look at the tutorial that's in the discription. Compiling the kernel is a little different from others ;)
mushk45 4 years ago
LOL! Only us users understand!
Eh, you run ./configure then make mrproper?
disciple4Christ 4 years ago
haha...
I don't know what mrproper is.
umm...do you know how to compile only the changes?
like if I changed one option, I have to recompile everything! :|
mushk45 4 years ago
well.. good for you^_^

thanks! I did a second compile today :)
