You are wrapping the flux field of the coil If you take a vacuum cleaner motor apart you will find they have layered plates around the coils they do the same thing as your hunk of metal behind the coil. If you notice you microwave oven there are layers of plates. Thanks for sharing, I spent many many hours with my wheels :-)

try shorting the transformer out to its self.
