Dressing up "like a princess" is fine for little girls because it helps them express themselves; however, when they have absolutely no influence on the costumes they're wearing and their mothers spend hours making them "prettier", they start to feel like they aren't pretty when they aren't all dolled up. Also, it's extremely detrimental to a child's self esteem when he/she is showcased in front of a crowd and judges only to lose because he/she wasn't as "pretty" or "talented" as the others.
