Thanks Yoshimo, for pulling my ass through the game with your snares, standing back and throwing one into a room after opening the door in the shadows was one of my favorite things to do and having them run out and attack only to be blasted in the face with more :) Vamps and illithids #1 for that, along with arrows and bullets flying at them, i love this game.
I love this fucking game so much, whenever i got suck on a really hard part in this game i would come to the main menu to hear this theme 4 inspiration.
This game was so bad it went back in time and caused the 1983 videogame crash, thanks for that BioWare, and now you continue to spit in our faces by making Mass Effect and ruining Star Wars
Damn this game is so insanely great, when I'm looking at games nowadays... well they're fun, spectacular and some indie-stuff is really innovative, so I don't want to say everything would be bad. But honestly: In terms of storytelling nothing ever got close to BG2 again (or to Planescape Torment e.g.). Mass Effect was a nice experience, the story was put in scene quite well but still the characters weren't as memorable as the ones in BG2 (also a great game though, it's just too hard to beat BG2)
Gotta love these nostalgic goggles of 90's RPG elitists. Story wise nothing has ever come close to the philisophical depth of PS:T, but gameplay wise it is completely superseded, same goes for BG. a "game" comprises of more than just story, and these 90's cRPG's are just completely underwhleming when compared to the gameplay of say DA:O.
@Supergibb No one is saying that games today can't be awesome, you tool.
People here have a point about devs making the plot, writing and characters so damn shallow and simplistic so idiots with a short attention span would not complain about "I WANT TO KILL THINGS, HOW CAN I SKIP BORING TEXTBOX".
The only expection these days might be Fallout New Vegas, The Witcher series or DA:O which are a very good combination of the two. Interesting plot and a good gameplay.
@WolfhoundMercenary You are mistaken. The vast majority of RPG elitists on the internet unrelentingly praise every aspect of classic RPG's and how nothing can ever compare to them. I completely agree with you on how horribly basic the majority of game's are these days, but the exceptions such as TW1 & 2, DAO, Mass Effect and FO:NV exceed these "classics" in gameplay and characters. The only exception to this is PS:T, which is so crazily original and well written that nothing can really compare
@Supergibb I kind of agree with you. Modern RPG:s have more personal, action-oriented gameplay which can be more immersive. On the other hand tactical, party-based combat was superior in BG. Just compare it to DA:O: DA really tries, but it has less spells, less abilities, a smaller inventory, less consumable items, a smaller party, far less available classes etc. (not to mention way easier dragons) I still think it's a great game but its strong point is the origin stories.
@Shenordak Yeah, agreed. For me, the most satisfying moments in the BG games was me giving my party orders while paused and then watching them casually stomp rooms full of monsters. Modern RPGS are satisfying but in different ways.
I remember when I skip school just to play BG2, i love mass effect and all rpg games but Baldur's Gate is the best game EVER made. I have a nostalgia just listening the theme :)
still haven't found game better than this...few times started it over, simply can't get it out of my head...story, gameplay...today's games may look much better but game expirience is far beyond this
also, like you said gear makes quite a lot difference, but very little things like for example invisibility ring can practically double your effectiveness.
Basically: boost you hide in shadows/move silently skills, buy good stabbing blade, ALWAYS stay in shadows when your in unfriendly territories and target those that thread too far from their parties. *evil face*
also, invisibility potions are obviously 110% usefull..

I started again with thief class, assassin halfling this time ;O
@Hokageeeeeee Are assassins really that good in shadows of amn? I found that i needed a very good weapon and high level in order to backstab effectively, at least against stronger opponents. Throne of Bhaal was great for experimenting because EVERY class kicked ass, but in shadows of amn i stuck to sorcerer, fighters, monk, archer and couple select others...
@jwunschie14 hmm well I dunno.. my main, the halfling assassin I talked about, has 50 percentage of all the kills on my group, AND I dont really even try to hoard all the kills for him... (allthough I confess that I prefer killing/weakening harder thrash mobs solely with him... meh :P)
If you want to see high backstab dmg, choose assassin, and not too fast weapon as his "stabbing weapon" (katana works well) and then target enemies that think they are out of harms way like unsuspecting mages. ;)
Well okay not really fair since it is my favorite game of all time. But alas i am still foolishly going to say this is the best compared to all of them :)
Can everyone please thumb down that top comment about the dislike bar please? You'd have to be a child to post recycled garbage comments on such a great video, and I'm pretty sure this game is too old to have children fans.
I still play this, Currently trying out a Kensai build using two weapon style with axes and long swords XD pretty good so far, kicked Bodhi good with the Daystar sword.
BG3 or no BG3? I guess I gotta agree with you guys. If anyone continued the series they would ruin it and turn it into a first person shooter. I was very disappointed with the direction Bethesda took the Fallout series but at the same time I spent many hours playing them only because I was able to mod them in the vision that I thought the game should have been like. DA:O was pretty awesome if not a little simple. I liked how complex BG2 could be with spells. I hate how they rushed DA2.
THe idea that Dragon Age is a spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate is a joke. If somebody wants to TRY and make a successor they will at least need the Dungeons and Dragons licence.
@if5tatement It just a marketing ploy by EA to get more sales and the old school RPG crowd into buying Dragon Age. They did the same thing years ago with a console game "Goldeneye: Rogue Agent" when in fact it had nothing in common or related to the original Goldeneye 64 game.
@DwinHoffiCymru Well to be honest, I played Baldur's Gate I & II both and as well DAO, sure, they are unrelated plotwise, but the overall is the same, it isn't an official sequel for sure, but you could say Baldur's Gate is the spirituell father of at least DAO
I'm saying no to a Baldur's Gate III because they'll just defame it or turn it into a pale imitation of the original games, like what happened to Fallout 3.
Not played Dragon Age so I don't know how much of a spiritual successor it really is. The Witcher was damned good though, even if it did have a habit of blocking off previously visited areas and had shades of Torment about it.
I mean, what do we have now that Bioware have gone the shitty, mainstream pan?
People go on about Bethesda and the Elder Scrolls games, and while I've enjoyed them, I think most people here played BG for the characters, the stories and the NPCs.
The Elder Scrolls games are just epic melodramas. Most NPCs only have 1-2 lines of repeated, ramdomised 'rumour' info, (yes BG had peasants etc but even they had more to say) and the side quests are usually fetch quests with no character devolepment.
Guys, what I think the main problem here is what most of us have seen as a betrayal by Bioware/EA.
Dragon Age was billed as the 'spiritual successor' to Baldur's Gate (a game we all love). Although it was a different setting and not as epic, Dragon Age lived up to BG in spirit and we were all happy with it.
Then EA forced Bioware to dumb down and rush out the sequel, turning DA2 into what is basically a heavily modded version of Mass Effect.
@lshaw17 Don't get me wrong, I love Mass Effect. I love the changes they made in ME2 as well. But it is a seperate and more linear tale than that of the spiritual sequel to BG.
I was filled with revulsion with the pedestrian, cobbled together effort that was DA2. I loved all the different characters you made in Origins; in this you got a sub standard Shepherd clone melodramatically called 'Hawke'. And a cast of large breasted women and Anime Characters.
EA and Bioware, I have nothing against America, but you can see what happens when a big American company with no imagination and inovation buys out a small but creative Canadian company that made some of the best games every to grace a PC platform. May Bioware's imaginitive spirit rest in peace. :(
They just don't make games like this any more. I wish I could forget having played this and Planescape Torment so I could go back and experience them again.
@DanotheSnitch don't we all, though? In terms of RPG's barring console RPG's(which is a different theme altogether) I probably spent most time and fun in this game.. Including BG1 ofc.
we humans only have so much wonderment we can get from games until they're all just another dungeon crawl for epic loot.... these games for us, were our first forays into a fully immersive and interactive world. For the first time, we were the lead characters in our own stories, as the game allowed us to do pretty much what we wanted within its confines. New games ARE allowing this, and they are getting much better mate. One thing lacks in new games like this though... character depth.
@DanotheSnitch Just for instance here, skyrim. Beautiful huge landscape, I get lost for days as all I do is game and I always have the energy to immerse myself fully in a game- games make me feel now the same way when I was 5 years old, but Skyrim fucks up one vital thing that made Baldur's gate 2 so emotionally alluring - the character stories, romances, the pages of dialogue.... the companions in Skyrim are flat, boring, and have nothing to them minus unique A.I patterns.
@DanotheSnitch In BG2 I would find myself stopping by a lake to talk to Viconia. In Skyrim I find myself.... not doing things like that at all. I suppose I could use my imagination, but then again, I could just go buy a box of lego bricks and pretend I'm king of my castle, instead of 40 quid on a videogame and a grand on a PC.
@rogerthat155 To be fair, Bioware/Black Isle have always been better with characters than Bethesda. Hence why Fallout: New Vegas was so better written than Fallout 3 and had companions I actually liked.
@seanb91 NV is an Obsidian game...BI is long dead, although most of their staff went to Obsidian in 2003. Speaking of which, I hear they're having financial difficulty, hence Chris Avellone's recent remarks about the preowned market.
ten hours per character creation stuck in the Abilities Score screen, hitting "Roll Again" "Save" "Restore" to get better dice rolls on the Main Char Stats with this music XD
@ForzadaLeb69 LOL - ya, forgot to set DebugMode=1 tho, so I was like "wtf? I am pretty sure it was Ctrl + Shift + 8, is it been that long that I dont even remember this?" - I installed BG2 like 2 hours after commenting here XD ----- I think I'll play with "regular" rolls though, the hole "18/00" in strength for a bard isnt quite convincing.
@ElPsychochillero yeah instead we will probably get a BG remake with michael bay style action and explosions with QTEs thrown in.. I miss the old Bioware and Black Isle stuff.
Like this comment if you dismissed Yoshimo from your party so he wouldn't betray you to Irenicus...and then rejoin your party after! HE'S SKILLED IN AVOIDANCE YOU CHUCKLEF*CKS
"Believe it or not, there was a time when PC RPGs had an unbelievable amount of content, fat manuals, and a sense of artistry that's become harder to shoehorn in the face of an increasingly profit-oriented industry."
-IGN at their top100 all time, BGII scored #24
What they are writing is true.. even if they are interested in remaking the game, the amount of work that is needed would take many years.
@mileninasakura The problem is that Atari owns all the rights to make Forgotten Realms games...and unless they wont bankrupt (but I have a feeling that sooner or later they will), BioWare is not gonna do Baldur's Gate games or anything Forgotten Realms related for that matter....but if Atari would bankrupt, EA, who own BioWare could be interested to buy the rights to FR games. But the thing is that BioWare brought the storyline of Baldur's Gate to its end in Throne of Bhaal, I would rather see
them doing something else, maybe new game series based on Forgotten Realms. But then again they have Dragon Age, that is according to their own words their "modern" Baldur's Gate so...
But anyways I really hope that either BioWare or Obsidian Entertainment would do more FR games in the future.
@Balnazzardi They said it was the "spiritual successor" to BG - But that was just a marketing ploy by EA to get more sales, just like they did with Goldeneye: Rogue Agent for consoles, slapping on the Goldeneye name hoping fans of the N64 game would buy it when in fact it had nothing to do with the old game.. So if anything, Dragon Age was just KOTOR in a medieval-fantasy setting and they just happened to *mention* Baldur's Gate during their marketing release.
I know this is super noobish, but I just got BG2 and made an assasin character, and I was wondering how do you use backstab.. heh... I know how to sneak and "gooo into the shadows" and whatnot but I just don't know how to backstab. ps: im in the first dungeon place.
@TheDoah Backstab/sneak attack is done automatically if armed with a dagger or short sword. Just stand behind the enemy when attacking and the extra damage is added in to hits.
Don't get the wrong Idea, I mean, I ADORED Baldur's Gate 1, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale 1, Icewind dale 2, Arcanum and the other oldies, but you gotta Admit... Morrowind, Oblivion were EPIC... words do not describe. ESPECIALLY Morrowind.
AND I'm pretty sure Skyrim will be more or at least as awesome!!!
@kacling really?I have to admit?you think you have some balls or smt writing this here?FUCK YOU AND FUCK SKYRIM A THOUSAND OBLIVION AND EVERYONE LIKING IT WON'T MAKE 1 BIT OF BG2 YOU PIECE OF STINKY CRAP WHORE I AM SICK OF THE BULLSHITNESS OF YOUR EXISTENCE TAKE YOUR CRAPPY SPAMWARE AND DISAPPEAR FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH ALSOO FUCK YOU BIOWARE TOO,YOU FAIL AND FAIL AND FAIL AND FAIL YOU PATHETIC SLAVES TO MONEY
@ILgInnnn dude you gotta cool off. its just an opinion. just goes to show how much of a retard you are for being so aggressive towards a simple view point. didnt say they were better than BG. i was just saying that the oldies arent the ONLY good games out there.
@Saufm I think Planescape: Torment is the only one that is equal, or, in my opinion, even slightly better. That doesn't apply to the music, though. Inon Zur did a great job with BG2 soundtrack, far better than Dragon Age.
KotOR, Fallout and Arcanum are coming pretty close, but not just close enough. =P
@GrandElemental Torment ranks amongst my all time favourite games... But alas, it is all but unheard of now :(. Tbh, with a total scripting of over 800,000 words, it is essentially just an interactive roleplay novel lol. Many people nowadays don't have the patience for it.
I know man, it's heartbreaking :( But I will always look back with fondess on the hours I wasted on the best RPG game ever created, and for that, I will always love Bioware!
@WillyWallace100 They rushed that game out in ONE year, if they had atleast another year or 2, it would be amazing.. Seriously, use that tiny little fragile mind of yours for ONCE in your life.
I totally agree with you, As much as I would love another Baldur's Gate game, It would just turn out to be a generic action game where you earn experience and obvious choice is meaningless as your character or sorry.. Pre-generated character's personality and story is already predefined by his or her companions and the game dumbed down to a state of a disposable console game
@WillyWallace100 Same here. Dragon Age looked really promising when it was in the makes, then EA bought Bioware, and it became all different... I like the game, but it would have been way better without EA's meddling.
know games are like 3d and shit but they are empty inside. GOOD STORY > GRAPHICS

Bioware sold its soul to the EA devil.
lshaw17 4 months ago
EA and Bioware, I have nothing against America, but you can see what happens when a big American company with no imagination and inovation buys out a small but creative Canadian company that made some of the best games every to grace a PC platform. May Bioware's imaginitive spirit rest in peace. :(
pspboy7 4 months ago
i'm actually glad BG is dead now, why?Because EA is starting to turn BioWare into a Madden styled company.
just look at DA2.
was DA:O better than BG? NO, but years ago, i realized that that would never happen, and thus, i loved DA:O
but now, it has been turned into a joke, rushed and dumbed down series.
i want BG to stay dead, i don't want EA to force BioWare to ruin our Childhood.
RIP BG, we will miss you, but it's better this way.
~
Rest in Peace, BG.
I remain loyal.

@DanotheSnitch Dragons Age gets pretty close. Not as epic, not as inmersive, not as extense, not as "real", but pretty close nonetheless :)
XaviNL 3 months ago
@DanotheSnitch don't we all, though? In terms of RPG's barring console RPG's(which is a different theme altogether) I probably spent most time and fun in this game.. Including BG1 ofc.
ZainNL 2 months ago
we humans only have so much wonderment we can get from games until they're all just another dungeon crawl for epic loot.... these games for us, were our first forays into a fully immersive and interactive world. For the first time, we were the lead characters in our own stories, as the game allowed us to do pretty much what we wanted within its confines. New games ARE allowing this, and they are getting much better mate. One thing lacks in new games like this though... character depth.
rogerthat155 1 month ago
@DanotheSnitch Just for instance here, skyrim. Beautiful huge landscape, I get lost for days as all I do is game and I always have the energy to immerse myself fully in a game- games make me feel now the same way when I was 5 years old, but Skyrim fucks up one vital thing that made Baldur's gate 2 so emotionally alluring - the character stories, romances, the pages of dialogue.... the companions in Skyrim are flat, boring, and have nothing to them minus unique A.I patterns.
rogerthat155 1 month ago
@DanotheSnitch In BG2 I would find myself stopping by a lake to talk to Viconia. In Skyrim I find myself.... not doing things like that at all. I suppose I could use my imagination, but then again, I could just go buy a box of lego bricks and pretend I'm king of my castle, instead of 40 quid on a videogame and a grand on a PC.
rogerthat155 1 month ago
@rogerthat155 To be fair, Bioware/Black Isle have always been better with characters than Bethesda. Hence why Fallout: New Vegas was so better written than Fallout 3 and had companions I actually liked.

@seanb91 NV is an Obsidian game...BI is long dead, although most of their staff went to Obsidian in 2003. Speaking of which, I hear they're having financial difficulty, hence Chris Avellone's recent remarks about the preowned market.

@mileninasakura It won't be done.
AtotehZ 5 months ago
@mileninasakura The problem is that Atari owns all the rights to make Forgotten Realms games...and unless they wont bankrupt (but I have a feeling that sooner or later they will), BioWare is not gonna do Baldur's Gate games or anything Forgotten Realms related for that matter....but if Atari would bankrupt, EA, who own BioWare could be interested to buy the rights to FR games. But the thing is that BioWare brought the storyline of Baldur's Gate to its end in Throne of Bhaal, I would rather see
Balnazzardi 5 months ago
them doing something else, maybe new game series based on Forgotten Realms. But then again they have Dragon Age, that is according to their own words their "modern" Baldur's Gate so...
But anyways I really hope that either BioWare or Obsidian Entertainment would do more FR games in the future.
Balnazzardi 5 months ago
@Balnazzardi They said it was the "spiritual successor" to BG - But that was just a marketing ploy by EA to get more sales, just like they did with Goldeneye: Rogue Agent for consoles, slapping on the Goldeneye name hoping fans of the N64 game would buy it when in fact it had nothing to do with the old game.. So if anything, Dragon Age was just KOTOR in a medieval-fantasy setting and they just happened to *mention* Baldur's Gate during their marketing release.
DwinHoffiCymru 5 months ago
@mileninasakura Atari own rights now to Forgotten Realms games. Not gonna happen since they never release anything good.

TheDoah 6 months ago
@TheDoah Backstab/sneak attack is done automatically if armed with a dagger or short sword. Just stand behind the enemy when attacking and the extra damage is added in to hits.

@Btrachter Totally. Any RPG that I've played since BG II was belittled by the fact that they all cant possibly live up to BG II.
Saufm 6 months ago
@Saufm I think Planescape: Torment is the only one that is equal, or, in my opinion, even slightly better. That doesn't apply to the music, though. Inon Zur did a great job with BG2 soundtrack, far better than Dragon Age.
KotOR, Fallout and Arcanum are coming pretty close, but not just close enough. =P
GrandElemental 5 months ago
@GrandElemental Torment ranks amongst my all time favourite games... But alas, it is all but unheard of now :(. Tbh, with a total scripting of over 800,000 words, it is essentially just an interactive roleplay novel lol. Many people nowadays don't have the patience for it.

@WillyWallace100
MrRubarce 4 months ago 2
@MrRubarce Thank you for agreeing with me.
As soon as EA bought BioWare i was like "Ooooh, that's not good.", and i was right.
i still love BioWare, mind you, but EA would simply force them to make completely mainstream and shitty.
There are somethings that are just better off staying dead.
(George Lucas should have learned this lesson XD)
WillyWallace100 4 months ago 2
@WillyWallace100 Same here. Dragon Age looked really promising when it was in the makes, then EA bought Bioware, and it became all different... I like the game, but it would have been way better without EA's meddling.
