He actually mentions Carrie Fischer in this song (who he had been married to). He mentions her in quite a few songs actually. But great song for sure (:
I have loved this album for decades now. Timeless and a testimonial to Simon's musical genius. Thank you, Aqualung. First turned on to it by a lover from long ago. Very evocative of the good times of my younger days.
"A sympathetic stranger lights a candle in the middle of the night". I don't know what it means, but I love it. It could be something as simple as someone who came over with a candle to help them look for a contact lens lost in a dark place. Who knows!
One of my faves from Paul Simon, a man who writes truth, she sings back to him in the B-VOX..."You feel the bite whenever you believe that you'll be lost & love will never find you; she is like a top, she cannot stop, she moves on...she said maybe these emotions are as near to love as love will ever be, and I agreed...
she needs to talk, we take a walk, down by the moonlight...my storybook lover, you have underestimated my power, as you surely will discover..."
The melody, rhythms, instrumentation, the whole production, and those lyrics, make this song one of most satisfying I have ever listened to. It's so good that no one attempts to make a different version. It is too good to be popular.
"Down in the ma-roo-oon light..." This song definitely puts the ol' voodoo spell on me. Can't imagine why no one pays it any mind... in my mind, it's a classic.
@davidmcc54 I remember my orthodontist saying, "All the songs on this album sound the same." back in 1991. But I think this is one of the greatest albums of all time.
That's what happens to people who spend their lives staring into smelly mouths. Let's not fire him, let's keep him working and keep him thinking that Maria Carey is God's greatest gift since sliced bread and braces..;-)

Paul Simon: "It'll just be us hanging out , nothing major, it will be mellow."
Woody Allen: "Oh ya see, I have a problem with being mellow because I tend to get TOO mellow and ripen and rot." Annie Hall

In his Rhythym of the Saints Interview here on youtube, Paul says this is a love song but it's about men's fear of women's angst.

Paul Simon wrote this song about his ex-wife Princess Leia. It said so in "Wishful Drinking," Princess Leia's memoir.

@cubaclips yep, too good, and too scary
for a world of people who believe the "stories"
'they' say are in THE BOOK...
