rolling off too much tone is such a rookie mistake... Try rolling off the VOLUME about 10% (the last 10% of a volume knob lets a lot of highs bleed through) and roll off the tone a very little bit (if necessary). Let the amp define your tone, so you get full potential out of your pickups rather that rolling off the tone too much and sounding like mud.
@webrokeyourbed "chops" by joe pass. "waka/jawaka" by frank zappa. "the incredible guitar of " by wes montgomery. just search them on youtube and find who you like. There are many styles of Jazz.

Oh, this is how to get a jazz tone. Bah, I could have figured that out by myself. I thought this was going to be on jazzy sounding licks and chords -.-
I been playin' a long time and I always wondered why there were tone adjusters and a choice of pick-ups on Electrified guitars. Thanks for enlightening me.. After all these years, I finally realise why my guitar sounds Jazzy! (Well it would. It's a Gibson ES 175 with flat-wound strings!) Now tell me something I don't know. There's plenty to choose from, cos I sure don't know everything! :)
I hope some rockers glean summat from this though! Thanks.
@BattyCuss What about me..i just bought my first guitar a 1962 Telecaster reissue,I know only 3 chords and this video helped me Get a little more jazzy sound out of it. Also by reading what you just wrote i googled what flat-wound strings are and now i know a little more, you have a Gibson ES 175.I read alot about that as well and i now know i need to practice practice practice before i invest in a BEAUTY like that. These simple videos realy help beginners.just like ur simple reply helped me
@ 9gibsonlespaul. with the combo of that amp and guitar it will be difficult to get a rich jazz tone. if you find the tone is being squahed use a little bit of overdrive(or clean boost) to thicken the sound.
I have a 1957 les paul standard and a Vox VT 30 amp. I am having troable getting a good jazz tone, i use the neck pick up but can't seem to tame the treble without squashing the rest of the tone. please help me. I am in jazz band at school and need to get the right tone
equinox by coltrane. I've got a seymour duncan jazz pickup in the neck of my epiphone les paul. Sounds great for jazz, blues, and rock especially rock with a wah pedal
DustyPeople1... just turn the tone control further. During the sixties and early seventies with '67-68 Les Pauls, switching to the neck pickup with the bass on full was always a nice technique.
I've got a DiMarzio humbucker by my short scale neck and that's all it takes for me to be L5 jazzy with it.
And if you need to hit bass bottom, turn the bass on your amp all the way up too. With the right feedback effects you could be getting into the Humpback whales tone zone, echoing around the oceans.
He makes it seem like there's no way to get Jazz tones out of a bridge pickup, so what am I supposed to do with my guitar that only has one pickup in the bridge position?
u can i have done it on my prs se semi hollow. just roll off the tone almost all the way and turn ur amps treble settings down really low with some bass boost. mess around enough and youll find it.
@skint0n0minted geez it's a basic explanation for wannabes...if you play jazz you don't need it, that's obvious! really jazz players are like those "malmsteen does it better" people? i don't think.
String your strat with fairly heavy flatwounds, set the p/u selector to the neck pickup and turn your tone knob off or to one or two at most. Strum near the neck or use your fingers if you want.
You're going to want to be in pickup position 4 or 5. I personally like 4 because it helps chords speak a bit better. Just take down the treble until it's mellow but not muddy. Sometimes it helps to give it a little mid boost, maybe take down the bass a little bit, and if your amp has a presence dial, take that down a bit too. The idea is to get a nice, round, and mellow sound quality while still retaining clarity.
The guys at expert village seem to consistently diliver THE WORST instructional videos on youtube. The name would lead you to believe that this Rtard is an "expert" jazz guitarist. This one's almost as funny as the "84 scales" guy. God Bless America
maybe I am on a wrong, I was just expecting sort of fusion sounds and how you can make your guitar sound funky and how you can have better quality on a jazz sound when recording, but this is far far away from "how to make your guitar sound jazzy" it more how to make your guitar sound lazy

I usually just use the neck pick-up, it's a nice smooth sound and has a little more kick when you need it too also, neck-middle I usually use more for smooth rock tones or clean rock tones.
Try tube amps. They're powerful for rock, and exceptionally warm-sounding. Fender is great for jazz, but crate has some very cheap tube amplifiers. I can get a nice sound out of the smallest, cheapest Marshall model. But then again, I have a Gibson Black Beauty.
when i play jazz i usually try to make it as bassy and warm as possible without being muddy at all

The best way to get better at jazz is to listen to more of it!!!
So many people that are interested in jazz and want to play it just can't because the simply don't listen to it enough.
Turn off the rock, metal, hip hop or whatever for a week and simply listen to jazz! You'll be amazed at how much better you get.
So the best answer for playing jazz, its listen to jazz!!! (alot of it)

'Stella by Starlight'. in Bb.. You want to play jazz, you HAVE to know this one.
An easier one, but also essential is 'Autumn Leaves'. That's Minor based, usually Em. Just google the tilte and 'chord changes'
Good stuff, good luck!

you don't need a special kind of guitar to play jazz. just listen to jazz music and pick up some of the shit going on in the song.
i play jazz on classical guitar, electric, acoustic, they all sound great.
